Four brand new campaign maps, each one focusing on a different area and era, and much more detailed. 13 new factions, over 150 new units. You get more than your moneys worth, that's for sure.
Several new features are added in the game, such as permanent stone, moated forts. Ability to coordinate reinforcements and other various interesting features. I personally thought it was a good expanison pack overall, nice improvements from the original, but obviously some problems did remain. Nonetheless its still worth it.
Four separate campaigns:
-America: focusing on the new world during the conquistador period
-Britannia: focuses on the late 13th century when the English is engaged in an attempt to dominate British isles.
-Crusades: concentrates on the crusading periods, map situated around the levant and other wider places.
-Teutonic: plays on the Teutonic crusades against the pagans in Eastern Europe.
Personally I enjoyed the Britannia and Teutonic campaign the most. Americas was okay, while the Crusades was slightly dissapointing.

I played the Brittania Campaign a bit as the Welsh which was fun, also dabbled a little with the Crusades Campaign plus the Teutonic, but never really got into them. Never even bothered to try the America's because it looked about as interesting as watching paint dry. Honestly, I bought Kingdoms just so I could play mods like SS and Deus lo Vult which all require Kingdoms to play. So for me it has been essential.
After I finish my current SS GC as the Teutonic Order I am thinking of giving the Crusades Campaign another go - maybe as Antioch or the Byzies.

Kingdoms is a great improvement over the Vanilla game.
Though I also bought it because I wanted to play some mods.
