View Full Version : Great Comic Books
I'm in the market for new reads, so I thought I'd kick off a thread. I really enjoy modern comics, so if you've got some in mind, toss out some names. Books I have liked, in no real order:
Persepolis
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Top Ten
Preacher
The Boys
Cerebus
Sandman
From Hell
Doom Patrol
The Invisibles
... and so forth. I've got a real, measurable weakness for the work of Alan Moore. Recommendations?
some you may not have heard of
Thorgal, awesome mixture of viking mythology and science fiction <- would start here it's great
Storm, weird science fiction, truly great drawings and storytelling
Ravian, also science fiction but more lighthearted

Seconded. I haven't read the others though.
Also:
Blankets, by Craig Thompson
Donjon (Dungeon), by Lewis Trondheim
Heck, ANYTHING by Lewis Trondheim
Black Hole by Charles Burns (Not for the faint-hearted)
Watchmen, obviously
The Dark Knight Returns, Obviously
Hellboy, by Mike Mignola
BPRD, by Mike Mignola (BPRD is better than Hellboy IMHO [Comics consisting of pages where people are just shredded to bits are FUN], but you need to read Hellboy to understand it)
Nausicaa, by Hayao Miyazaki (It's manga, but not manga-y enough so that you're constantly reminded of it)
The Palomar series by the Hernandez brothers. A must in every serious graphic novel collectors bookcase.
Maus, by Art Spiegelman, (Obviously)
Anything that Joe Sacco writes. The art is a bit weird at first, but you'll get used to it.
That's just off the top of my head. I bolded the ones I particularly like.
Recommendations?
Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis is very very good

Oh look, a thread about comics. There ARE fans on this site after all.
I assume you have easy access to American comics and and little to no access to European stuff. The I would recommend Lucifer (a spin-off of the sandman series).
