I have recently been confronted with the infamous Error Code 8001050F on my PS3, which basically means I cannot sign in to PSN, which means I can only play my games locally rather than online. this is very, very, very bad for me.
Does anyone know how to fix this? No place online helps, and I don't want to send it in for $150 just to get what should have been working working.

You tried resetting it to factory settings by holding the power button for 5 seconds?

no
will that delete all my stuff? honestly, I don't care about my game saves, since I don't really play anything but MW2 anymore, and GoW3 next month, but I cannot risk losing my MW2 ranks, weapons, just any MP stuff. you wouldn't know if that is stored on your PSN account or your HDD do you?

you can restore to factory without the harddrive attached, can't you?

I don't think you can take the hard drive off a PS3 easily. I reset my nephews as it was configured for a full HD tv and I only have a 1080i tv, the saves etc on the hard drive were untouched, it just resets all youroptions to the factory settings. Might not work but worth a shot.

edit; Gah, double post. I'll use the space to mention I mean the power button on the console not the controller. You already know that but I may as well make sure.

It's not you. It's everyone who's trying to sign into PSN. I get the error too, so it's a problem with the PSN network.

UPDATE 3 (8:10 EST) I CAN CONFIRM THAT THIS ISN'T A PSN ISSUE ANYMORE, IT SEEMS TO BE A FIRMWARE ISSUE. MY PS3 HASN'T HAD INTERNET CONNECTIVITY SINCE JULY, AND I JUST TURNED IT ON TO SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN, AND THE DATE IS 12/31/1999. I HAVE A 40GB ORIGINAL PS3. I CHECKED MY TROPHY PROGRESS AND IT'S STILL INTACT BUT I DID NOT LAUNCH SSHD, SINCE I DON'T FEEL LIKE RE-DOING ALL MY TROPHIES
Looks like our original find is correct, PS3 Slims (120/250 GB models) are unaffected. Those people can log into PSN without the fear of this happening to them as of right now.
In other words, if you were an idiot and got the Slim version, you're fine. If you had the intelligence to buy a larger model PS3 (like me), you're hosed.
They've acknowledged it (http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/288320#tab=comments&sc=&contribute=&local=). But the moral of the story is, if you had an Xbox you'd be playing right now. :wink2:

Fixed. :)
Some more
What's apparently effed, as speculation goes, is when the internal GMT-tracking rolls over to 3/1. It's either not rolling, or rolling to 2/29, at which point a system tries to add/subtract from 2/29, which it can't do because the front-end calendar doesn't have a 2/29/2010, and **** explodes. Seemed to happen around 4PM PDT, which I think is 12AM GMT, so. And the PS3 launched in 2006; it's hit 4 2/28s so far. 2007 and 2009 were odd-numbered years; 2008 was an even, and a leap year. 2010 is the first even non-leap-year the system's been around for. If some sort of base-level math is choking on itself, it may have ruled out the odd 2007 and 2009 successfully, but is convinced the even 2010 is a leap year (this part I'm less sure of, but is why leap year could theoretically come into play at some point.)

The PSN network is fixed... for the meantime. However, if you gained any trophies in the past few days, they are gone. I have the Wildebeast Crossing trophy in Afrika, but everything else after that is lost, and I cant just go back and get them again. Stupid reverts...
