Rainbow Six Vegas?
No zombies/aliens/harmony unicorns/whatever sorta limits your choices.

Rainbow Robot Unicorn Attack Six is extremely tactical until they made Vegas. RS1, 2, and 3 are all hard as heck because you will die. OFTEN. From a single shot. There is plenty of tactics involved in planning and execution. A single slip-up on the planning phase can spell disaster for the entire team and mission.
However, they aren't third person shooters.
Rogue Trooper is excellent, short and sweet. The Max Payne games are stellar as well, not tactical but great shooting.

maybe this will be the fix of rainbow six vegas 1 & 2 never gave me.
Max Payne will provide you with the best experience inside the 3rd person shooters.

I'll second that. I loved the first one.

You also don't want to miss out on Freedom Fighters, criminally overlooked game from the makers of Hitman. You will have beaten it in an evening or two without much effort but you will love every second of it. If you like squad-based combat with a twist, and should you be lucky enough to find a copy (it was a commercial fail despite it's quality), get it play it love it.

There was a third-person Bond game a while back.

How can you not just mention Hitman??? That game was great fun, and the difference in game play between completing a level as "silent assassin" and just "mass murdering" was astonishing. Well, carnage is the difference actually. Absolute carnage. Maybe a bit old now but I'd strongly recommend the Hitman games.
Yeah the Hitman games are kinda a 'thou shall' if only for the musical score.
