View Full Version : Creating a new unit "on the cheap*
Is it possible to create a new unit in the crusaderunit.file by copying a line in the crusaderunit.file and changing the name of the unit?
Do I need to copy/rename some other files pertaining the graphics and animations of the unit as well?
I want to create a new unit using the animations and graphics of the arquebusier and my modded ninjastar projectile.

Sorry, but you will need to rename the first word in the line. So like change "Arquebusier" to "NinjaArquebusier" (or whatever), and then search the "Medieval - Total War" folder for "Arquebusier", and it should come up with 8 files and 2 folders, copy them and rename them "NinjaArquebusier". Then open the "loc\eng" folder and search "names" and "descriptions" for "arquebusier" and copy the lines right below the originals, renameing each instance of "arquebusier".
Not too hard, buit can take a while.

does anybody actually create new units 'on the expensive' http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
seems to me that all those nasty text files need a real pro when it comes to editing.
there are no nasty text files http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
only nasty graphics http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

What exactly do you mean http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
Do you mean like the musket with bayonet guys
or do you mean creating new sprites?
Either way yes and none of them are pros
for that matter.

I mean creating new sprites, and creating new looking actions using those 'nasty text files'. I think all the new units we have are derivitave not only of the generic unt base (as they have to be) but of some specific unit (Byz Inf with spears instead of swords for instance)
I may be wrong and there maybe some people out there who are creating these things from scratch, and if so I do apologise - but I was just saying that modders are all working by using the other units and building new units of of them, so there is no such thing as doing anything else than on the cheap.
And PS - if you want to be really cheap - just go into the names file and change the name of an existing unit. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Whitey,
click on the link to my "web site"
it's just a picture gallery.
You will see what ppl are trying to do.
As for copying units, as a base is the best
way to proceed, unless you already know
all the base stats and moddifiers.
If you want Byzantians with spears
well just call a unit with spears
something Greek and define them as Byzantine
and you will be doing the same thing CA did.
I do not call this cheap.
I call it clever
My 50 unit test pack has 750 files
and that's just for testing.
It may be crap but it's not cheap
even at half the price.

Whitey this an offer you should refuse http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
Some bifs have more actions than others
and this means we won't always get the image we want for the unit but we should find an action to match.
