View Full Version : With the Power of Rock and Roll... (a crazy-ass music videos thrread)

Hey all, I've been thinking of starting a collection of the most ridiculous music videos ever to have hit the air, with a special focus placed on those completely crazy ones where people make stuff happen (i.e. deflect bullets) simply by playing their guitars. I dunno what it is about moments like that; part of me finds it to be the most ludicrously funny thing I've ever seen, but another part can't help but think "damn, that's awesome." Here's my problem, though: as someone who wasn't around in the 80's, and as a relative newcomer to metal, I've only been able to find two such videos so far:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_rg3bV0cJs#t=42s
Judas Priest's Breaking the Law (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_rg3bV0cJs#t=42s), and

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et6b0ftDq1U#t=3m12s
Damn Yankee's High Enough (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et6b0ftDq1U#t=3m12s). (The magic starts at 3:12 in this one, just in case you don't want to sit through three minutes of awful ballad rock; the link will take you right to the intended start position.)

So, I need the help of all the music lovers out there. The quality of the music itself doesn't matter so much (as you can see, I've got Judas Priest, probably the second greatest metal band ever, and Damn Yankees, which is probably Ted Nugent's absolute low point in terms of music) as the absolute ridiculousness of the video itself.

So: get postin'!

Edit: almost forgot another -- AC/DC's Shake Your Foundations. There was just too much rock and roll for that building to contain.

Great song, but not really the kind of video you're looking for. Interesting though, is that two alternative takes surfaced on YouTube. Fantastic! Four guys trying to look Rock and Roll, through take after tedious take. It shows what great editing can do for a music video.

Still very cool! There's something about four guys in ridiculous outfits, monkeying around on stage, sweating coolness from their pores. I should post it in the manliness thread for Hooah to see!

This might fit the bill. Rock'n'roll magic begins at 1:30.

No rock and roll magic but still, this one is pretty rediculous.

Thanks for reminding me, I forgot that had come out. I'll have to go and grab it tomorrow.

Great thread idea. The only problem is that I'm wasting hours of time looking through old 80's hair metal videos trying to remember which had the magic guitars instead of just regular cheesy special effects. I thought for sure Rock You Like a Hurricane would have guitar magic, sadly no. I'm sure Motley Crue had some, but their label apparently is pretty anal about the YouTube. The best I could find so far is another Judas Priest:

Halford makes a guy's head explode at 3:50.

I refuse to parse through Helloween videos, even though I'm pretty sure there will be several "winners"...

Yeah, we might have to loosen the restrictions a bit to include videos that are simply ridiculous, like Miotas's AC/DC video. It just doesn't have quite the same charm, though.

Also, I managed to find another; again, not quite "guitar magic", but around 2:15 the waiter does bring the rich snobs a platter of rats, right before Ratt's lead guitarist smashes through the ceiling and starts scaring everyone with his Rock and Roll powers. (Also, check out 2:34; he damn near slips right off the table. That would have HURT.)

@Lemur: dude, that was hilarious. I swear I've seen that video before, probably when I was really young.

I remember those RATT, Quiet Riot, and Twisted Sister vids from my youth, classic examples.

In this one, Billy Idol fights a horde of undead while singing about masturbation. Magic happens around 1:38.

Even the drum set shoots lightning! Patton's head explodes! Instrumental carnage all around!

I love YouTube, this vid linked me to the official vid of Surprise, You're Dead, which I never knew even existed. :2thumbsup:

Somewhere in my brain I have this image from a video, some dude with big hair ripping a guitar solo while prudes scream with their hands over their ears. It will come to me eventually.

Hey, now, if you wanna bring up the Eagles of Death Metal, you're easily missing their best video:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5v4n_eagles-of-death-metal-i-want-you-so_music
At 0:47 he begins his rock and roll magic on some chick he met at the bar... and then proceeds onward to an old couple, some poor kid, Jack Black, a maid and some random asian guy he meets on the street. It's a great "magic guitar" video, although admittedly rather self-conscious.

@Lemur: dude, I'm pretty easy-going with music, but Michael Jackson sucks. Basically, Mike, the Beatles and U2 are my ideal of the unholy trinity.

Gay Bar is an all-time classic song, and the video is great, but there's not rock'n'roll magic in that, is there? Well, I guess there's the cloning Abraham Lincoln thing, but ...

Oh, excellent BBC reference to the song here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2kD1YUtA5o).
