Welcome to overwatch hotel, a game of disturbing imagery and paranoia. A game for the true survivalist.
Info
Overwatch hotel is a simple and fast moving role-playing game. It just takes a few minutes of your time every 2 or 3 days. It should be more like a interactive story thanks to the sizable contributions of both Secura and spL1tp3r50naL1ty.
The rules
Characters
You are an average person in every way imaginable. You can build on this every way you like as long as it's believable (no rambo's, secret agents or robots from the future sent back into the past to ...). Roleplaying your chracter is incouraged. it gives fuel for the narators (Secura and Split) and it elevates this game to something more then mechanics and tactics).
In addition you can distribute 2 points in total on the following attributes:
- physique
- intelligence
- will to survive.
These will naturally influence ingame actions. Extra point(s) in physique will make you stand a bigger chance when battling whatever you might encounter and will help a bit when escape said dangers. Extra point(s) in intelligence will make you stand a bigger chance when escaping whatever you might encounter and will help a bit to find the exit of this nightmare. Extra point(s) in will to survive will make you stand a bigger chance to find the exit and will help a bit in combat.
Gameplay
Every turn starts and ends with the whole (surviving) group together. So remember, this is a group effort (or at least I hope it for your sakes)
At that time, players can state their action:
- Look for the way out
- Search the building for clues
- look for trouble
Look for the way out: you’ll get a chance to get closer to the exit. You’ll need your will to survive and your intellect. If unsuccessful, you’ll end up further inside the building. When searching for clues, you’ll get a chance to find helpful information about the situation you’re in. These clues can be anything and anywhere. You’ll need your Intellect and your Physical attributes. If you’re successful, you’ll be in a better situation in encounters or when looking for the exit. If you decide to look for trouble, you be almost certain to have a confrontation. You’ll be able to take a helpful item (decided by the narators) with you before the confrontation. If you manage to fight off ‘whateverisoutthere’ then the chance of an encounter in the next round will be significantly less for everybody.
You can choose to go with whoever is doing the same. The member with the highest ability counts for that group. Every extra member will add a diminishing bonus to the result of the action (small groups = more actions, bigger groups better chance at success). If you don’t specify further, it’ll be assumed you stayed with the group you were in. Only one group will get an encounter, so many small groups means safety for most possibly at the cost of others while one big group may spell disaster for all.
As said before, after every turn the players regroup again for the next round. Some info is public other private. You can share all the info you got but remember that you may want to keep some info to yourself. It's rarely the trusting good guys that survive in these situations.

The story so far
Prologue: in which a strange but alluring invitations finds you.
https://img148.imageshack.us/img148/8238/kaart.gif
You gingerly fold the gold leaf-lined note back into your pocket, and peer around the lobby once more; scarlet-hued carpets, jet-black leather upholstery and elegant mahogany woodwork tell you that you are in a world of luxury.
You were slightly surprised at being invited to such a prestigious establishment, and the sense of wonder didn't wear off as the taxi ferried you to the airport or train station, nor did it abate as you arrived outside an ornate, marble-lined entrance.
The reception desk was curiously empty, although a brief note explained your stay in further detail, specifically the means of ordering services from the hotel and not to enter the Royal Suite on the top floor; sat next to the note was a pile of brass room keys, each assigned to one of the group.
Sleepy from the travel and overwhelmed by the momentous occasion, you trudge to your room with luggage in tow, before collapsing into a deep sleep.
Chapter 1: in which the guests gather in the ballroom; some unfortunate news is announced; and the first decisions must be made.
https://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4623/deballroom.jpg
The guests congregated in the grand ballroom at the center of the hotel. A polite note, not unlike the hotel invitation, on the pillow of their beds requested them to join the others in the grand ballroom for further explanations. There were even directions on the flipside.
The atmosphere among the guests was somewhat uncomfortable. All but the most outgoing personalities would consider braking the ice in such a group of opposites, all with there own secrets and questions.
The hotel itself wasn't exactly soothing either. The eclectic decorations and strangely placed lights and chandeliers made ominous, ever-changing shadows. Some may even have noticed something irking at the edge of their vision, ever illusive when you try to focus on it.
Then there was the personnel. Overwatch didn't seem to have any except for the maître d’ who greeted every new arrival in the lobby. Sure, you caught glimpses of bell boys and what probably was the maid on your way to your room but these images were already fleeting like they were never real in the first place.
The silence was abruptly broken by the nasal voice of the maître d’: “In name of the staff of hotel Overwatch, I welcome you to our lovely establishment. I'm afraid I have some bad news. It would appear that the person who made the reservations gathered you all here for a specific reason. I'm not aware of all the details but it seems he wants to play a little game with you. Your benefactor, for lack of a better word, also stressed that he doesn't necessarily expect everyone to survive this game.
Well, I bid you all a pleasant evening. You can eat as much of the buffet as you like.”
His grave expression didn't alter once during his short speech.
Chapter 2: in which more guests are present then earlier anticipated.
The key to a good bourbon is in the serving; always at room temperature, preferably two fluid ounces or so in a snifter and definitely accompanied by some fine tobacco. That was one of the rules that Jack Churchill lived by, and he was indignant at the offence that the bartender had just committed.
"It is against the hotel's policy to smoke in the ballroom, sir", he had whispered as he watched the wizened soldier fumbling with a box of matches to light his pipe, "you cannot light that in here".
"Are you joking, Lloyd?", Jack shouted in response, slamming his hands down on the bar, matches flying everywhere and his bourbon splashing over the woodwork. He was not pleased at all; a free luxury trip and he wasn't even allowed to smoke?
Around the ballroom, pairs of eyes looked up from food, drinks and magazines to focus on Mad Jack; at the end of the bar, Bob called over "listen buddy, the last thing anyone wants on a vacation is arguing". He turned back to his cold pint and hoped that would be the end of it.
Jack motioned for a response, but his voice was drowned out by a loud chime; eyes turned once more towards the organ at the end of the bar, a single finger outstretched and pressing down upon an ivory key. Joseph Winterbottom grinned sheepishly, and mumbled an apology to his fellow guests, his friend Mr. Athington looking at him with a look that could well have killed.
The ornate pipes of the organ chimed again, and the entire room's gaze fixed upon Joseph once more; Thomas threw a treacle tart from across the room and narrowly missed him, his expletive-laden sentence silenced as the organ began to play an upbeat, jazzy number to the surprise of the entire room.
Listen to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcX7awxmBg8
It was as if the room had sprung to life and in mere seconds, figures appeared out of nowhere; men dressed in the most dapper of dinner tuxedos, women robed in elegant spring-hued chiffon gowns and dozens of hotel staff meandering around with aparatifs and cocktails aplenty. They all seemed so very real, and yet they couldn't be... could they?
Sara shuffled in her seat as a young couple sat next to her, seemingly oblivious that she was there; the pair canoodled with one another, whispering sweet nothings about eloping and parenting. Feeling uncomfortable, Sara gathered her things and moved to sit at Dr. Weston's table. The good doctor was staring at the most beautiful woman in the room, clad in a lilac, off-the-shoulder number with a scarlet mass of hair that made her look like a movie star; his cigarette hung limply from his agape mouth, ashes dripping onto his open magazine.
At the bar, a young gentleman sat between Bob and Thomas, completely ignoring the pair, and called the bartender over. Lloyd and the man spoke briefly about the correct way to drink bourbon, and then the man left, glass-in-hand.
Everything seemed so very, very real... and yet it couldn't be, could it?
In that moment, the figures vanished as quickly as they had appeared, and the guests were left baffled by what had just occured.

Character Name: Thomas
Points spent: 2 points on Intelligence
Background: Journal Entry 1: Overwatch. Overwatch Hotel. What kind of name is "Overwatch" for a hotel? No. A better question is why the heck did I receive this invitation? Only thing of notice I did was design a couple of Detective games, but nothing of any notice. If you ask me anything, there's something fishy going on here.
...in fact, I can't even remember why I agreed to coming here in the first place. Maybe I was out drinking again. Or maybe my mom told me to do it. I don't know.
Oh well. I will write more later. For now, sleep.

Background: He really didn't want to be here. His easily frightened and jumps at any small noise or movements of shadow. His known for abandoning his comrades in fight thus being the first one to run away from bullies. His a coward. Though when he sees no other option, he is quite capable of defending him self.

Name: Mr. Athington (borrowing from YLC's game )
Points: 1 to Intelligence and 1 to physique
Background: Though he was born into a deeply religious family bordering on fanaticism, he has always been a rebel questioning any belief in the supernatural. That is what has brought him here as well. After a fierce argument with a very wealthy friend, he got the invitation to this place as a bet. He thinks his friend has arranged/bought into this to test of his beliefs and if he leaves this place unscathed he stands to win a handsome sum of money. Little does he know that he might not make it out alive.
Name: Joseph Winterbottom
Points: 1 to Intelligence and 1 to Will to Survive
Background: Being a foster child, with just a note from his parents that they always be watching him, he had to fight his way alone to where he stands now. But life has treated him well, now he is a middle aged professor and past adventurer, who had made a fortune selling rare items he found while travelling. (People jealous of his achievements claim he is modern tomb raider, but those are just rumours aimed at his reputation) After a fierce discussion with his friend Mr. Athington he pulled some strings to arrange for them both to attend this cultural event. He didn't tell his friend that he would take part as well, but just paying him for going through with this wasn't enough for him. After all he was always looking for a chance to relive his adventurous days. The people that arranged this in background for him, told him it might be dangerous, but a Winterbottom can not be easily scared. Hopefully he hasn't become too rusty in his past years as a university professor and paper pusher.

Juno is a streetwalker with an unfortunate attraction to roughians. Last night she was negotiating a "date" with Chris Pronger when some idiot interrupted the conversation with offers of free lifetime stay at Overwatch hotel. Being freshly out of shanks and pepperspray, Juno thought it would be wise to make nice with the stranger and make Overwatch hotel her new base of ...cough... operations.

03-31-2010, 17:03
Name: Dr Hugh Weston
Points: 2 to Intelligence
Dr Weston is a disgraced former surgeon and a recovering morphine addict. Until his craving for opiates got the better of him, Weston was known as one of the finest heart specialists in the world. However, when the survival rate of his patients plummeted, the authorities soon discovered that he had been forging prescriptions to assuage his uncontrollable jones. As a result, Weston was stripped of his medical licence, and spent almost eighteen months in jail. Now, a free man once more, he is looking to put the past behind him, and build a new life for himself...

Bob,
1 intelligence, 1 will to survive.
Bob, a busboy in a swanky restaurant and part time sneak thief found his ticket in the wallet of a man who had been having lunch in his place of employment. Despite it clearly being a foolish move, Bob decided to use the ticket. Quitting his job, he took the taxi intended for his walletless victim and hoped they wouldn't ask for a swipe of his credit card on check in...
Name: Sara
Intelligence: 1
Will to Survive: 1
She stood outside of the hotel and looked up in fascination. She'd grown up in a small town and though she'd always dreamed of leaving, she never had. She still worked as a waitress at the same restaurant that her dad had gotten her a job at when she was 15. She was currently 23. Her friends had all moved away and were finishing their degrees and getting started on their careers. Most of them she didn't even talk to anymore, as they were to busy.
She thought she had a good thing going with her previous boyfriend, but he just finished his degree as well and moved away. She had hoped he'd take her with her, but instead, he'd said his goodbye and never looked back. She realizes now she never loved him, just the idea that he'd take her away from the rut she seemed to be in.
When she got the invite to the Overwatch Hotel, she was ecstatic. She was unsure why she received it, but she just couldn't pass it down. For once, she had a way out of her life, even if it was only temporary. As she began to enter the hotel she reminded herself, that just like all those stories she'd read and movies she'd watched, there was no such thing as a free ride. She wondered though, what was the cost?
Name: Yuudai

Information:
Yuudai is a Tokyo U student who happened to find a golden ticket inside an abandoned black leather-bound notebook in the courtyard.
First chapter. The game has finally begun for real. Skim over the rules again on the first page and put in your orders. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.

"Well, if the man, wants us to play, let's play! I'm taking one of those candles and going looking for trouble."
Yuudai looks puzzled, and decides on a tactic.
"maitre d', what is your name? I want to write it down in my notebook for future reference."
After this, Yuudai decides to start looking for a exit. "You guys are free to join me, if you like."
Thomas simply smiles and, while he thinks nobody is looking, takes one of the sharper knives from the buffet table and hides it inside his pocket. If watching psycho movie marathon had taught him anything, it was to be paranoid then sorry.
Then he decided that he would look for clues on just what kind of game his "benefactor" was trying to play.

Look for away out of here... Grab the sharpest knife from the buffet.
Sara sees several people grabbing knives from the buffet and starts to get a little nervous. After getting her meal from the buffet, she calmly slides a knife into her purse as she moves to a table to eat her meal. As she eats, she calmly and respectfully looks around the room trying to recall the faces of everyone there and the strange service staff.

Phase 1
The Search For Clues
Double A, johnhughthom, atheotes, Joooray, Winston Hughes, Methos, Seon

Oh great. Ghosts.
Or at least it's statistically likely that what happened was a gesture from the paranormal universe. It always is like that in games.
Alternative answer may be genetic memory from ingesting strange material, simultaneous, synchronized dreaming caused by hallucinogen, or that we just travelled through time. I think ghosts are pretty likely.
Look for clues. Search for any trace of the paranormal, or anything that will give me a better idea of who our guests were

Chris Pronger explains his hit on Samuel Garris
When the guests got back to the lobby, Chris Pronger decided to declare that his hit on Samuel Garris was inevitable.
"It's a nothing play if that scary noise doesn't happen," Pronger said, stressing that he did not intentionally hit Garris in the head. The contact, he said, was partly because he is 6-foot-6 and Garris is 6-foot-1. "Of course I'm going to hit him in the head," Pronger said. "He's quite a bit shorter than me. It's just law of physics."

I like to add that you can always chose to regroup. It's not guaranteed you'll find each other but it's always possible.
Again don't hesitate to make your give your own version of what your character experiences. Let's make this one giant multi-angled story.

Phase 2
Looking For Trouble
slashandburn
The first floor landing of the hotel was painted in warm, summer hues and adorned with watercolours of boating lakes and meadows; Santiago Torres rolled his eyes at the decadance of the building's artwork and waved farewell to Will Coback before taking a left and vanishing from sight down the next corridor. In truth, Torres was happy to be free of the little scaredy-cat anyway, he was probably much better off going around alone anyway... people like that often hindered rather than helped, in his opinion.
The orange paintwork of the first floor landing faded into a cool azure hue as Santiago proceeded further down the corridor and then blended into a frosted white-blue colour; the air around him plummeted in temperature as if to suit the chance in decor, and it took all of Torres' willpower not to head back to the stairs due to the intense cold that pricked at his skin. It was going to take take more than a bust heating system to frighten off a man with exceptional willpower such as Santiago's.
Listen to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUaZMsPiNRo
He recalled his childhood sweetheart back in Cuba, Rubi; she was a wily young lass who had often paired up with him for fishing expeditions and such, and she had taught him many of the life lessons he carried with him today. He remembered the breathing technique she had taught him many years ago for retrieving their lobster traps, a technique that meant the pair could dive without the bothersome encumbrance or cost of diving equipment.
He felt that his current situation warranted the technique too, and he paused for a moment, closing his eyes and inhaling a lungful of air and exhaling slowly, repeating this exercise for a minute or so until he felt that his breathing had become steady and consistent. The air around him remained cold to the touch, but the stinging sensation of frost had subsided entirely, and Torres believed his technique had worked; he opened his eyes.
Darkness.
Santiago couldn't see at all, everything was pitch black; he turned around on the spot, calmly at first, but could see nothing, and panic began to set in. Swirling around, bumping into the walls, Torres stumbled around the corridor until he tripped over and fell to the floor in a heap. The Cuban swore loudly as he struggled to get up, but some unseen force seemed to be holding him down on the ground in a tangled mess, his head half pinned beneath his arms.
"Your eye is so pretty", a child-like feminine voice whispered through the darkness, "can I have it?"
Santiago screamed in horror as the unseen voice attacked, hands scratching at his partially exposed face, fingers probing for the fear-stricken eye that flitted around trying to find the assailant to no avail. His screams would go unanswered for several minutes.
---------------------------------------------------
When he finally awoke, the young Cuban would find himself comforted by a group of fellow guests, their sorrowful yet disgust-ridden faces failing to hide the true extent of his injuries. He was lucky to be alive at all.

Chris Pronger blasts media, specifically Canadian media, over various things
Earlier Tuesday, Pronger called in to the "Roggin and Simers Squared" radio show in Los Angeles and told Fred Roggin he suspects the recent events at Overwatch hotel happened because of "members in the media pressuring the league" due to the Garris hit.
"The hotel should make its own calls, not be pressured into anything by the media, and more to the point, the Canadian media," he said.
He also was quite irate over the spelling of his name as 'Procter' and suggested to journalists that they look up his name on the Norris Trophy for best defensemen or Hart Trophy for MVP.
Pronger, looking worse for wear, was mum about his injuries and instead give a spontaneous explanation about an recent incident with an unknown woman.
"Well, how could you not think that's a great smile? Of course I liked other things about her too but start off with the smile first, that's what brings you, and then move on to other assets." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YAho2q3Ku0#t=0m17s)
"Look if you were in my position you'd have done the same thing. How I was supposed to know she was a zombie?"
"I'll tell you what though, she better watch out for an elbow to the face the next time we meet."
Pronger went on to explain why he has decided to not speak to the media (which is on "black-out"), and while he does so, he says that the Detroit media is equally to blame with the Canadian media, despite the fact that he hasn't read anything said or written himself.
I'm gonna wait around a bit to try and regroup. If nobody is coming I'm putting the team on my back once again and looking for trouble. :2thumbsup:

Sara stood up quietly and slowly ran her hands over her outfit. She didn't really care how she looked, but she needed the time to compose herself and to take stock of her surroundings.

now that is interesting... does it mean you got a separate PM? hmm...not sure if you should be posting in the thread as we are supposed to believe you are missing.
I asked Secura before I posted.

Search for clues. Alone if possible, some odd characters here. I don't trust them.

Yup; I wasn't entirely certain, but it's not as though the character is dead.
I'm awaiting a PM from the host anyway, he raised some points about the progression of the story and such that need addressing. I think we might change a few things that have happened thus far, such as me doing all the narration and such, share the load or whatever PP wants. :P

Tim will:
Go back to the lobby where the other guests were with the book.
I will join the others in searching for clues. What happened to Sara made me very weary of my surrounding and wondering what I've gotten myself into.

OK, I'm missing orders from slashandburn and atheos. I'm sending PM's now, I'll process the orders tomorrow at this exact hour. If they don't reply I'll assume that they stayed put doing nothing.

This game has slowed down a bit lately but don't worry we're working on the next installment.
It's hard narrating, huh PP?
:curtain:
Yuudai wrote his name in his black-leather binded book, then waited 45 seconds.
He promptly dropped to the floor, suffering from a heart attack and died.
Yuudai is no longer in the game.

I did a introduce your self powerpoint at Uni.
That got people laughing.
Not sure what's happened to the game; PP wasn't fond of the direction that the narrative was taking with me at the helm, so I asked him to do the PMs/writeup for this phase so I could see what he wanted to do... I assume he ended up busy-busy with real life stuffs.
Sorry, guys. :<

Yep, sorry guys.
Renovating parts of my house in the weekend and trying to get pregnant in the week (my finacé not me of course) is pretty much eating up all of my free time ATM.
