I saw a mention in the gaming news thread about the release date being moved to April 18th for RockStar's new action/shooter "Red Dead Redemption", but thought it might deserve a thread of it's own.
If the gameplay only half matches what is shown in the videos at the game-site, this is definitely on my "must buy" list. There are 4 game play videos, but check out the animation of the horses and other animals in the first one.
Since it's set at the turn of the century there's also Mexican revolution action south of the border, and you also not only get standard old west six guns and rifles, but also early automatic weapons like the Mauser Broomhandle or the Maxim machine gun. Where's the wild bunch when you need them?:2thumbsup:

Waow, looks interesting... Also looks like they took a leaf out of Mount & Blade's book. The few shots of mounted combat look ok, I think there was a Western mod for M&B, those guys are going to be a bit narked!

It'll be longer than Gun, and that was a game that could only really be faulted by its length.

Agreed. Red Dead Revolver is probably my favourite western game, and the duels in that were thrilling and amazing. Once shot a guy in the crotch six times!! :D

Tbh the control scheme, movement, cross hair and much more looks identical to GTA4. I hope this isn't the case. Whilst it wasn't a bad game, GTA failed to really spark my interest and once I was done with the main story line I didn't play it again.
I expect a lot more from Red Dead Redemption.

Back in MY day, we could only shoot people six times in the crotch... but we made do and never complained!

The game looks decent anyway, I'll probably end up doing my usual game-buying ritual of poking my sister into getting me a free two-night rental, taking it for a spin and then making a decision from there. It's the kinda game she likes too though, so I might have a wait. :<

I pre-ordered it for the PS3 from Amazon last week, and was notified that it shipped Monday morning via UPS. Unfortunately it arrived today, which happens to be the only day in the week that I work at a part time job, so the delivery notice was on my door when I got home. Now I have to wait another day until they make another delivery attempt.
I have read several good reviews and also have also read some very good personal comments at another gaming forum by several people who have played it a few hours. I'm really looking forward to it since I need a break from NapoleonTW, which I've been playing non stop.

Won't be playing this until June (spoiler tags in here please! ~D) but it comes out tomorrow here. Does anyone know of anywhere that is offering the game cheap tomorrow? I seem to remember getting GTAIV for about £30 on release day (ASDA or Tesco) whereas it would have cost £40-£45 everywhere a month later. I can't see it getting any cheaper in the next month ao it's probably worth buying tomorrow from whereever I can find it cheapest. So: RDR deals in the UK?

Well, after a whole afternoon of playing RDR, I am totally hooked. This game is like being in a Clint Eastwood movie. It's a totally open universe full of living individuals going about their everyday business. The animations are really well done and cinematic. I just wish I could take screen shots. All I can say is you may not hear from me again for quite some time.

There is just too much going on in this game to describe. but I can see it wasting a whole lot of my time. Last night while playing I went into town and spent over an hour just playing poker--cleaned out the table though! Of course they were playing "Holdem" which wasn't even a poker game back in the early 1900's but I won't quibble.
This Youtube video is titled the Essence of RDR, and it will definitely get one in the mood for a little old west action. The music is by Ennio Morricone from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, but it fits so well.

1) I liked flying in GTA IV, the city looks absolutely awesome from above.

I have not seen a review yet of RDR with anything less than 9.5 out of 10. The average score at Game Rankings. com is 9.6 + out of 10. The statement I hear over and over again---and that I am beginning to agree with---is that RDR has "console game of the year" written all over it. It certainly gets my vote.
--and IMHO it is so good that if they do eventually make a PC version, I will buy that also. While it looks great on a 1080p LCD TV, it would look even better utilizing the processing power of both a high end PC multi-core CPU and GPU. Thats where any generation of console have their limitations. Another benefit would be that with a PC one could more easily make screenshots and machisma movies. One can only do this with the console by purchasing limited use extra equipment such as a TV capture and tuner card used in conjunction with a PC or maybe a high end DVR.
Two quick stories.
I was riding across the desert in Mexico admiring the mesas and buttes which reminds one of monument valley in Utah (John Ford filmed many of his westerns in Monument valley) when a saw a rider up ahead suddenly come to a stop, hop off his horse, and run behind a large boulder. Thinking it might be a ambush, I approached carefully. To my surprise when I passed the boulder I could plainly see that he had hurriedly stopped to simply take a leak behind the rock.
--now that I am maybe 40 to 50 % though the main story, I have of course gained some fame and reputation. Consequently, as I was riding down the road in Mexico, a passerby on foot hailed me to come over. One has to be careful about these encounters because sometimes they are a trap to be sprung by banditos hiding in the area and other times the man will simply tell you his horse has been stolen and asks you to catch the thief. However this was a totally new encounter I had not experienced before. The man simply wanted to thank me for a saving his mother who evidently lived in one of the small villages I had defended in a fight with the Federalies. He thanked my profusely and then gave me a few provisions that he said he had saved for just this purpose.
The attention to detail in this game is simply astounding.
I have not seen a review yet of RDR with anything less than 9.5 out of 10.

Now you have, I just read the synapsis so far but they say GTA IV was the better game objectively speaking but this has the better setting/atmosphere according to the tester.
One thing he found was that horse-riding was less interesting than the car-aspects of GTA, the MP is not very well organized they say (in terms of menus as I understand it) and the gameplay has less facets, the main missions lack some variety. All around they think it's a great game but it also has some minor flaws.
How's replayability? Is the story line set in stone?

Well, they still gave it a 90%, which is usually considered excellent. Actually, at Gamerankings.com there is one review now that has dropped to 9.3 out of 10.0. but there are still enough perfect 10's to keep it at 9.5 average. Out of 10 reviews listed for the PS3, 4 reviewers gave it a perfect score.
I have never played any of the GTA games since the I found the subject matter generally distasteful, so I can't compare. To me it's one of those rare games that comes along every once in a while that makes it hard to think about much else and has totally dominated my waking hours. You know one of those games that you start playing planning on only an hour or two and before you know it, it is 4AM in the morning. The action, the characters, the dialog, the voice action, the visuals, and the story are simply first rate.
Then of course, I am a huge western fan, so maybe that is the reason RDR has me so hooked.
Cheers
P.S. I know that hardly any modern complex game is going to be perfect and there even are a few minor details about RDR that I am not crazy about---such as the save system. However, others have stated that they absolutely love the save system in the game, so things like this tend tp boil down to personaly preferences. Technically the game is not completely glitch free either. I've incountered one lock up in a week of play and have had to restart the game because a gate that was open the first time I tried a mission and failed was frozen shut on the replay, but these are relatively minor--plus the developers have already patched the game at least twice that I am aware of.
Lastly, I do not play on line, so I also can't comment on the multiplayer aspect although some of my friends over at SimHQ seemed to be having fun with it.

How's replayability? Is the story line set in stone?
I am only a little over half way through, but the main quest appears to be static although one can play parts of it in a different order plus one can simply ignore it as long a they want while having fun with the side quests and mini-games. Mini-games include very in depth simulations of poker, blackjack, liars dice, horse shoes, arm wrestling, and five finger fillet. (the game with poking a knife between the fingers of a hand placed on a table)
Some side quests involve strangers that you encounter throughout the game such as a dime novel writer or treasure hunters and others are randomly generated quests such a bounty hunting. There are also random shootouts in town and the desert that keeps things interesting. Both the towns and the countryside thrive with people and animals. You can ride the stage coaches and trains plus drive most coaches and wagons--there's even a couple of horse and wagon races to win early in the game. Game hunting is a lot of fun and a big source of income early in the game. So far I've encounterd jack rabbits, armadillos, several kinds of snakes, skunks, raccoons, coyotes, wolves, bob cats, cougars, wild boar and at least two species of deer--both bucks and doe. One can also down crows, owls, and hawks.
You just have be carefull with the larger animals since they will also hunt you or your horse. I lost my favorite golden stallion with black stockings to the mate of a cougar I had just shot. (the big cats travel in pairs) I hated do it, but I also skinned my horse for the money his hide would bring. I have an Apaloosa now--he ain't that fast, but he's a real smart lookin' piece of horse flesh.
Bounty hunting is a real challenge--especially if you try to bring the desperado back alive for a bigger bounty.
All in all, the main story is quite long and fairly involved with lots of twists and turns so I'm sure I will play through it again almost immediately--- Then set it aside and come back to in some time in the future. In the meantime the sandbox nature of the game will keep me coming back for spur of the moment play without bothering with the main quest.
Sounds like fun. Sounds way better than any of the GTAs. The wild west is such a brilliant setting for such a sandboxy type game!

I expect that anything capable of running their current generation of games, which are targeted at the Xbox 360 and PS3, will play Red Dead just fine. In other words, if it can run GTA IV, I would bet money it will play Red Dead. So yes, a gtx 275 should yield acceptable results.

Yes, and they always say that up until a week before they release a game for the PC.
Sales have been so good for RDR, that there is no reason presently for RockStar to even hint that there will be a PC version. I'm sure they know that given the choice, customers who have both a PC and a console will usually opt for the PC version, but as is---the dual platform owner will be forced to buy the console version if they want to play now--plus the publishers also have a little less to worry about with pirating on the console.
Then a year later they can hit the PC market, and get both new buyers and double dippers. I know that I would probably also buy the PC versions if for nothing more than the easier capabilities of making screen shots and movies.
I have finished the single player campaign twice now, but wanted more, so I actually started playing multi-player--which is a first for me. As I previously stated, I usually don't play the multiplayer component of games. In fact other than combat flight sims, this is the first "shooter" I have ever played on-line. However, once I got into it and improved to a point that I usually score more kills than deaths, I really started to enjoy it.
Lately, I've only been playing "gang shoot-outs" rather than the free for all matches or the various "capture the gold" matches. Heck, I've even been team high scorer on several occasions. Of course there are some really good players out of the thousands that play on line, so it just bad luck if one gets stuck on a low XP team against a high XP team.
I have to say that overall, RDR is one of the best shooter type gaming experiences I've had in a very long time---the single player story is first rate, and multi-play has been a hoot.
Cheers

Perhaps, I should have said "many who have both platforms would choose the PC over the console", ---but I suspect as you say they would not be the majority. However, I know that I am in this category and have quite a few gaming friends who feel the same way. We all started gaming with the PC and it will always be our preferred platform--especially when it involves a shooter.
Even though I have gotten used to it, I have never felt that the standard console controller could match the elegance and preciseness of a mouse and keyboard when it comes to movement and weapons aiming. Heck, I still get hung up just trying to get through a doorway with a console controller, but I have never had that problem on the PC.

I hate level 2 Dead Eye. That is all.
I hated breaking horses, until I read a tip...
Just rotate the analog stick clock-wise the entire time. It never fails.
Until I found that, I was getting very close to throwing my controller at the TV near the end of game when you have to break the 3 horses to progress the story. :furious3:
I found breaking horses veeery easy, I just failed once or twice out of a lot of attempts. you just move the stick in the opposite direction of where your guy is going, just moving left and right seems to do it, too, most of the time. I was quite surprised how easy it was first time I tried it and I'm not someone with fast reactions either.
I never had trouble with breaking horses. I reached the end of the game and realised that I'd never been thrown by a horse, so I roped one and purposely let it buck me to see what happened.

One of the hunting challenges in on-line free roam is that you have to kill 5 cougars--one of them with a knife--followed by 5 bears--one with a knife. It took me forever the first time. One goes to Tanner's Reach for the cougars and Bearclaw camp for the bears. The damn things come at you in waves--3 or 4 at a time. There's also a boss cougar (actually a leopard) and a boss bear that you have to take down later. I finally hit XP level 50 and passed into legend which resets one back to XP level 1. You get a new character skin, a sheriff's badge by your name, and a bull to ride on the first XP level cycle. I'm on my second XP level climb now, but learned the trick to getting the bears and cougars with a knife, so it was comparatively easy this time around.
I just saw an gaming article on-line that said unless something drastically changes, RDR will be the best selling console game this year. It combined the sales for both the PS3 and the 360.
It's two cougars with a knife, and yeah, it's somewhat challenging, but then i used medicine for the first time in the game (instantly heals you) and that made it a bit easier, just make sure when it jumps at you the first time you don't roll down a cliff or so. :laugh4:
The bear I beat like a true knight by hitting it with the knife from horseback, basically made strafing runs, helps to make sure there is only one bear in the vicinity though.
I hear other people wounded them with gunshots and then finished them off with the knife, but they're not true heroes. ~;)

You must be referring to a single player challenge. In on-line free roam there is no medicine. My method is sort of an exploit. One has to stand outside the Tanner's Reach cabin until the first cougar shows, you shoot him and get the other 2 or 3 from just inside the cabin door. They won't come in. Then repeat until there is just a single cougar pacing in front of the door. Next one jumps out with the knife to chase the cougar as they are moving away. It takes perfect timing, but it works.
For the bears, it's essentially the same thing, except at Bearclaw camp there is a partially collapsed cabin one can climb on that the bears can't reach. Shoot the first four or however many to get down to one last bear. Wait until he turns away, jump down, and chase him stabbing his backside. I guess instead of a head shot you could call it a butt shot, but one dies a lot less than trying to take them head on.
Still having a lot of fun playing "gang shootouts" on line. It's pretty much total mayhem, but I manage to hold my own.
Cheers

In the end, I gotta say I was disappointed by this game. The single player was ok, but nothing special imo. The multiplayer started out great, but quickly got old. There's only so much to do in free roam, and the coop missions are pretty uninspired.
After I completed the story mode, I decided I had enough and traded it in on Goozex.
