ok, well ive started making this wonderful map.. im trying as best i can to stick to the original floor plan of the castle, but it will be tough to make it 100% accurate, ill post when it is done, and any information on the surrounding countryside would be good

TuffStuffMcGruff,

Kerak de Chevaliers is located in a arid area, on the outcrop of a hill. This hill has very steep slopes on three sides, so the castle is only accessible on the side of the three great towers of the inner ward... I do not have a link to the picture at the moment... IRC, looking from above, the spur looked U shaped, with the only accessible side being on top of the U, and directly facing the great towers...

Talking about inaccessible castles, there are quite a few in the Pyrenees, and in Germany. The most awesome location I have seen for a castle though is in Italy

well its basically a multiplayer map, i know what the castle itself looks like, as wqith its location on the hill, etc, but what im looking for is just some shots of some of the surrounding hills. Im actually planning on making a serires of maps based on the crusader castles, and there is another that will be along after this one. I will also put a readme with each of the maps, staing the best florin count for each to make it fair.

The big question is whether you can actually set these maps for specific regions like for Malta I wanted to be able to fight for the Valetta area or London would actually have a castle map of the Tower, that sort of thing.

The answer is; you can http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You have to open the Early.txt file (or High/Late whatever startpos you like best)in the campmap/startpos folder. Scroll down until you find "Region Attributes".

Lets illustrate what to do with an exemple; setting castle for Wessex.
In "region attributes" wessex is described as FLAT, and the MAPGROUP is set to -1(meaning random). When you start a siege battle in wessex, MTW will search for a castlemap named castleFLAT_*nr1*_*nr2*_*nr3*. As there is 5 mapgroups(nr.1 in mapfilename) of castlemaps named this, the -1 will make the game pick one of them randomly. Nr.2 and 3 depends on the castleupgrade. If there is a fort in Wessex; nr2=1, a keep; 2, a castle; 3, a citadel; 4 and a fortress; 5.
Nr.3 depends on extra upgrades, like curtain wall, ring wall, catapult towers etc. (look at the tech-tree)

To have the castle we want in Wessex, we must make 15 castlemaps of it, in the different stages of upgrading (basic fort + 14 upgrades...alot of maps to make...). If the -1 in "Region Attributes" is changed to for instance 6; our 15 maps must be named castleFLAT_06_nr2_nr3.
When this is done, move the mapfiles from the SAVEMAPS folder to BATTLE/MAPS

Now, when beginning a new campaigne and starting a siege battle, the number 6 and wessex desription FLAT will make the game search directly for the castlefalt_06 mapgroup.

I've only tried this once in a test, but it worked just fine. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

I would like to build several castles, and have started work on Carcassonne (Toulouse), Fougeres (Brittany) and the city walls of Constantinople. Was eager in the start, but this takes a lot of time - time i don't really have http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Hope this can be of any use...

wow.. that is ndeed interesting, i think ill have to take a good look at this, perhaps i can do something like that with some of my castle maps. I guess ill try making a mod using real castles and sites across europe, that should prove interesting.

it only takes me about a day now to make a historical castle

So is that to say that you could actually set the map for a province say for instance Aragon and have that as a castle map ie to take the province you must take the castle? or no?

so in regionattributes rather than flat could you set it to a certain castle map

Alrowan

i think that is possible, although i think its a little bit silly, but could be surprising

Alrowan,

When using your Krakmap I found both attacker and defender beamed right into the castle....was that your intention ?
A beautiful map though

ok, after some more testing ive found that it works fine if you have the game patched, im not sure about if your game is not patched
