I am thinking about buying shogun ( and mtw). I have just bought a new computer, intel i7 930, windows 7 64bit etc
i have heard that some old games won't run on new pc's is this the case with shogun or mtw1?

Thanks

There is a plethora of problems of STW/MTW, most of them linked with certain series' of video cards, however the situation is not desperate, especially if you have a bit older hardware. It is just as likely that you will be able to run them.

They are most certainly worth it imo, and you won't regret it, assuming of course they run.

I am afraid I do not have any older hardware as my old pc completely died....

I got my laptop last year and it works fine. I didn't install the throne room though. I have vista and the menus flicker and sometimes it flashes to the desktop between turns but that's not a problem. It does crash more than it used to but luckily some of the guys here told me about ctrl + s which autosaves on the map screen. If you save reguarly you won't lose anything important. Best to save just after you've fought a round of battles and then again before the next. For me it pretty much only crashes on the map screen.

STW is actually quite stable - MTW is glitchy, which is why it has trouble on newer hardware.

Nvidia cards are the most troublesome. Any 8xxx or 9xxx series cards are likely cause serious issues in battle. This can only be resolved in the early 8xxx series (i.e. the 8800) by reverting to the earliest possible drivers.

The map should be fine and flickering menus may be resolvable by renaming the starting credits movies so that they can't run - and/or by alt tabbing in and out.

If all else fails, there's always the software renderer.

It worked fine on XP, but I couldn't get it to run on Vista. I recently bought a HP laptop with Win 7 and it runs without a problem. I'm a happy clam.

I've got vista and it works perfectly. It flashes and was mostly black, but the best soultion is to change the resoultion, fixes most of the problems you may find with Vista Shogun.

I have a Vista O/S with INTEL graphics and have had only one problem with STW. The "flicker" on certain screens. The ALT-TAB cure fixed this. ( See other posts elsewhere for details. )

MTW runs also but crashes periodically. Indeed, the Campaign game refused to run at all until the resolution was adjusted. ( See other posts elsewhere for details. )

Both are set to run under XP.

I also noticed that lowering the resolution on STW helps that flicker problem. Runs fine now on my XP.
