Depending on your OS, the codec is normally installed. You can install some sort of codec-pack, this is something I would not do, they are in most cases not up to-date. A program like VLC is capable of playing nearly all codecs.
Start EB-Configuration in your RTW folder and disable movies, if you are using a shortcut, add -nm at the end of your target line.

VLC Player and K-Lite Mega Codec Pack seem the best options.
I have never heard of anyone encounterg this, what OS do you use?

This could be a reason. Did you disable the movies? Does it work now?

I had this problem once too in Vanilla, codec installing didn't helped me because it was a corrupt Windows installation, could this be the case?
Do NOT install codec packs! They can mess up with your OS in ways you don't want to know, I spent years try to educate people in that.
IIRC RTW video format is WMV so just update your WMP.
If that doesn't work try this: http://members.iinet.net.au/~malith/files/msundecoderpack2005.zip
I developed it back then and it's 100% safe
