View Full Version : WIN 7 64, EB will only run in Windowed mode
As the above title says. I have just installed EB to my new machine, and the only way I can get it to run, is by making a shortcut from the RTW.exe file and adding the -ne switch....
i..e. RomeTW.exe -mod:eb -ne
I had a hellish time initially getting RTW installed and running on WIn 7 64, but that now runs fine, and properly in full screen.
Eb won't run at all via TrivScrp, but apart from only running in a small window, runs correctly when started via the above shortcut.
Any suggestions, because I just can't play it in a 1/3rd screen size, not when my new machine can run NTW comfortably with all settings at absolute max...
Thanks.

If you can't get the game to run outside Windowed mode; then we have to adopt the “mountain to Mohammad” approach: make windowed mode look like full screen.
To do so, edit the preferences.txt file in <Your RTW folder>/EB/preferences/ and search for the resolution values. Also, to be able to take screen shots that correspond 1:1 to your screen; edit the TGA width setting and the TGA aspect ratio (width/height-you-want I think). So on a 1200x800 screen you'd edit the TGA width setting to 1200 and the aspect ratio to 1.5

That's a pretty good idea, if normal methods won't work...... thanks :)
I'd still like to get to the bottom of what's causing this problem though...
Hey I've sorted it, or to be more accurate, it's sorted itself......Win 7 downloaded a huge amounts of updates overnight, now even the trivial script works just as it should....
(Annoying new OS, bah) ;)

Hey I've just experienced the same problem. At least I think so as I'm not 100% sure what windowed mode actually referrs to... Everything is properly dl'd on my new laptop and EB runs fine, however, the screen leaves about 2-3 inches on either side black while the game runs in the middle. I've played around with the resolution and display settings to no avail. Medieval 2 ran fine but now EB won't. I tried manually editing the preferences .txt but there doesn't seem to be one in my EB folder, just the one in the original RTW folder. Does anyone have any solutions to this problem?
Oh and also using Win 7

Note your current laptop resolution. Backup your preferences found in EB\preferences first before changing anything. Then just enter the noted resolution under 'STRATEGY_RESOLUTION' and 'BATTLE_RESOLUTION'. Should work with any possible values, however they must have to be under the maximum possible value noted in the preference file.

Thank you for the quick reply but as I mentioned earlier, there is no preferences .txt within the EB folder. The only one I could find was in the Rome Total War folder, the same folder in which the EB folder is located. Here is a screenshot of my EB folder in case it is helpful.

Once again thanks XSamatan, good to know someone is looking out for those who are more or less computer illiterate but want to play EB!:2thumbsup:

I think it doesn't create this folder because EB is installed inside the Program Files. If you have the Trivial Script installed, try to start the Preferences dialog with administrator-rights, normally the folder isn't created because of the right management from Vista/Win7. If it is not created, search manually inside your user-directory for the folder, I really can't say you where it is exactly located.
BTW: You are saying side? Meaning you have a wide-screen monitor and the sides are black, but not top and bottom? Try to activate the wide-screen option inside the EB settings.

Thanks for the advice. Got it to work. I had to run a search through my files and it seems that windows hid the preferences file in EB from me. Anyway I edited that with my comps recommended resolution and now the game fills the screen.
I love Windows 7 but it can be a little wacky with administrator rights issues. Thank you XSamatan
