View Full Version : Creative Assembly Anyone know if you can mod the causes for V&Vs?
We all can agree that it is frustrating how easily you can get Good Runner while it is nearly impossible to get Fine Leader or Gentle Knight for instance.
There are so many great Vices, but we hardly ever see them as they seem to be chancebased.
So I ask can this be changed? And how?
sadly kraxis, the V&V effects are all hardcode,
we would love to change them, but we can't...
if only there were more Star Trek Armada fans...

Yes V&V's are hardcoded, swapping them around may help but I don't think a person running from the battlefield deserves the vice, honourable knight.

i believe i saw in one thread that you might be able to influence or change the v&v's for a faction leader in the 'startleader::' item in the early- high- late.txt files, but it would only be for the faction leader himself and i dont know the values necessary nor which of the numbers to change, but there was a comment on it a while back.
and i've no idea what the values after the 'addheir' mean nor why you can add more than one of these lines for any given faction.

No, there is no way, currently, to modify the frequency nor the effects of vices and virtures. Kraellin, that's old information, the start leader numbers affect the number that comes after the Kings name (Lou XVI), but the first number sets if the king is a hero king, who do have various special vices and virtues.
If you really want to try, you can go to http://www.hexworkshop.com and download Hex Workshop, open up MedivalTW.exe in it, and change things until you find the vices and virtues in all the mumbojumbo coding.

What a sad situation...
has anybody ever tried to do a hex edit on the tw exe files?
if so, what have they found?

I have tried in vain to hex edit MedievalTW.exe, without much luck. There do appear to be distinct sections, divided by seas of or 1 or I usually. I once really though I found something big, it was 50 distinct bits of information that followed a common pattern and all, so I tried changing them so they all looked the same. However, when I loaded up the game, I couldn't find the least bitty thing changed. I tried to think "what is there 50 of in the game", the only thing I came up with is provinces, as there are 21 regular factions and 43 "extra" factions (64).

The MTW executable is encrypted. If you open the STW exe in a hex editor it will bring up all sorts of interesting ASCII. In the MTW exe you get jibberish. -of course it's possible I've overlooked something in my hacking. I have a suspicion that it's encrypted as a result of using some sort of safedisc copy protection measures. There are safedisc-protected executable unwrappers that may give us access to the V&V's in ASCII form but they're hard to find and our efforts to enhance the game for the community begin to take on an illegal taint.
I'm sure CA had their reasons for binding the V&V's into the main exe but it would have been so much better for us if they were in a simple (and expandable) text file. Can you imagine how cool it would be to have a fan-created, greatly expanded list of V&V's? Additions wouldn't have to have unique bonuses; a set of different madness descriptions would add greatly to the atmosphere of the game and get around some of the faults of repetition, "-oh look, there's yet another general that thinks he's been impregnated by an elephant..."

It is indeed a Safedisk'ed EXE.
My personal opinion is that this was a complete waste of time and money, but this sentence is not to be taken as an official CA position ;)
The VnV table is in one place in the EXE but the triggers which accumulate VnV points and lead to the awarding of specific VnVs are scattered throughout the code. It would be very difficult to create a system which would let you add completely new VnVs to the game and define how and why their points were accumulated. The best we could do, and I don't know whether it's being done (possibly not), would be to export the VnV control table to a text file, so you could mess around with threshold values and the effects VnVs had on characters.

GilJay,
here is one vote for the table to be exported
aka Armada Style,
in Star Trek Armada almost every "control" file has been exported to a text file, almost anything can be altered easily.
so pleae forward a request for as much as possible to be similarly exported
:-)
examples include
V&V's,
hero's, kings, heroic kings and their attributes,
Ohh yes
At least then I can't blame anybody else for my horrible V&Vs... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
well, we already have a lot of the stuff in text files so I am happy enough...but more options is always better...
