There are 43 free slots for extra factions. I tried to add a new one, but it seems one can't have more than 20 (+rebels) factions active at the same time. It also seems that factioncolors are a hardcoded thing. Anyone who has more experience with this?

It would be nice for the xpack if we had even more control about this: 64 active factions and option to define the unitcolor(s) and flags for each faction.

tosa,

where do you get this data on there being 43 free slots? where you finding this? i dont know about a 20 faction limit. i see no reason for this in what i've modded so far, but i do know there's quite a bit you have to change. maybe you missed something? when you add the faction you're trying to get have you also tried it when the faction list isnt already at 20?

also, i think you have to edit some of the .bifs to change some of the colors, though, this may only be banners and shields and stuff like that. not real sure. ask one of the guys that are working with the .bifs a lot about this.

There are 21 regular factions, and the game is programed with 43 "extra" slots, that it does in fact say were put in in order to allow for modding. However, they're hardcoded bad, such that there is no set of names that they correspond to, so that makes (maybe made) the game crash when they were clicked on. The colors are also hard coded, but I don't know that all the extra factions are the same color. Yes, there are shield and flag bifs that can be modded, they did work, but again, you couldn't click on anything.

Only 20 rebels would surprize me, but would be consistant with things I've found.

I assume you are talking about the FN_FREE_ factions, I have also tried to add some of these but had the same problems - the game crashes if you click on them or try to fight them. Also they gave some strange graphics like the ships from shogun attached to the faction leader pieces. Dont know how to make them work. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

I'm not sure about the limit of 20, I thought I had put in more than that.

No it is the extra faction slots in the exe file...

But there I count it to 25 free slots. 3+11+11=25...
Theer you can also set a lot of colours so perhaps you can create your own shields and perhaps even faction colours.

It's mentioned in some of the locfiles. variables.txt f.e.:

// note - the factions Free01 etc are empty slots that don't appear in the game, but may get filled in by customers
// making mods to the game. You don't need to translate them.

Yeah but it don't seem to work.

And if it does, I for one would really like to know how.

Because i can't get the damn thing to work.
Perhaps http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif Gil can ask whoever coded it???? And see what is needed to add a faction, or atleast change say novograd to something else and leave the Russ on Early/High/Late.
Because you really can't change the Swiss. which is really annoying me.

Kraxis: where is that located? the exe file???? As in the Medieval_TW.exe?

You should probably read Wellington's post on this subject here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=5;t=1356;hl=wellington).

He used free_1 as successfully as I've seen, but you can't play as them, nor do much but look at them.

It's possible to add all 20 factions to any era.

Check http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/MTW/Stats.shtml All factions online. Option B unlocks all factions that are placed in that era by CA.

Option C unlocks all 20 factions in all eras. C is intended for online and custom games, but you can play a campaign with it too. Don't expect it to be balanced or fun, it just shows that it's possible.
