"Day 7" ends

Christy Hart and Reilly Banks watched passively as Diedrich White and Andrei Kerensky accused each other until the stalemate was broken by Alejo de Lula. Gritting their teeth, both Andrei and Alejo grabbed Diedrich who began spouting profanity and kept accusing Andrei of anything and everything to the very moment he was locked in the airlock. Diedrich screams were muffled for a moment, until they were replaced by his pounding fists on the airlock door. Both of his executioners look at each other and nodded, Andrei pressed the button. They dared not watch his body being sucked away into the void, but they knew the deed had been done. The pounding stopped.

"Night 7" Ends

Epilogue

5 days later
Ira, Pleasure Dome Omicron

The camera zooms in to a well dressed man in his late twenties, very good looking.

"This Matt Bronswick for IPN, broadcasting live from Pleasure Dome Omicron, where the survivors of the terrible tragedy on board transport XJY-0745295 are now being brought planetside."

The camera pans to the right and four haggard individuals can be seen being escorted by peace officers. The first is an old man, he is followed by a man in his thirties and a woman in her late thirties. Behind them, looking devoid of any worries, is the fourth man, in his early forties. The camera moves with Matt Broswick near them.

"Matt Bronswick, IPN. A comment please?"

The camera shakes as the peace officers force back the journalist and his camera man, when the camera regains its focus a woman in her thirties wearing practical street clothes is standing next to Matt Bronswick.

"I am Lieutenant Elize Alverra and I will answer your questions, Mr. Bronswick."

"Ah... Thank you Lieutenant. What exactly happened on that ship?"

"To the best of our knowledge, it seems an unstable woman by the name of Susann Becker began murdering every passengers and crew member while they were in stasis. The ship's captain, being armed with a pulser managed to wake up everyone left alive when Miss Becker tried to kill him. Unfortunately he died of his wounds shortly after."

"Wasn't there also sabotage?"

"Yes there was in fact sabotage. A rogue researcher, by the name of Diedrich White apparently decided to test his wild theories by redirecting the ship into a star. Ironically, if it hadn't been for Miss Becker, he would have succeeded."

"How did the other passengers actually manage to survive all that?"

"Well luckily for them, they had a few experts who managed to direct repairs on the ship. When Miss Becker, who had blended in with them, began killing them one by one, they interned their suspects into sleeping pods, until they found her out."

"Will the man who killed her be charged with any crimes?"

"Considering that she had taken a little boy as a hostage, who unfortunately died, Reilly Banks will not be prosecuted for shooting Miss Becker. Though we have taken in the pulser he used as evidence."

"What about this Diedrich White? I take it the survivors repaired the ship, what happened to him?"

"It seems Mister White, upon realizing that he couldn't conduct his experiment, decided to kill all remaining passengers, perhaps to gain control of the ship. He managed to kill two passengers before a retired ship engineer, Andrei Kerensky, and an ex-doctor, Alejo de Lula, spaced him."

"Will they be facing any charges for that?"

"No. It is the position of this department that their carrying out such an execution was unwarranted, though we understand why they took such an action under the circumstances."

"Well, that's all the time we have. Thank you very much Lieutenant, for shedding light on this tragedy."

"It was my pleasure Mister Bronswick."

The camera feed lingers for a moment before switching back to a woman at a desk, who continues the evening news with another story.

Postgame

Alejo de Lula became a surgeon on Ira, treating patients who practiced extreme sports which were banned by the government of Ira. The pay was very good and he made the best of his second chance, working hard to avoid the mistakes of his past. Nevertheless, for the rest of his life he was haunted his journey aboard transport XJY-0745295 and all the deaths he encountered there, even blaming himself for some of the deaths. He never married and died at age seventy two, with a bottle of whiskey in his hand.

Andrei Kerensky took an extra month of vacation on Ira to replenish himself and then went to live with his children, who a few years later finally graced him with grandchildren. He died a happy man at the age of ninety-six, surrounded by loved ones.

Christy Hart never discovered that it was Alejo de Lula who had been responsible for the death of her husband. The void in her heart remained ever present and when she returned home, she nevertheless returned to work for the Citizen Protection Bureau. Yet, she could not find it in herself to place the same amount of effort in her job as she did when her husband was alive, the lack of closure gnawed at her. A year later, a careless mistake while interviewing a prisoner resulted in her death.

Reilly Banks continued on his work as a corporate fixer for many years after. He once said that the XJY Incident, as it would be called, was one of the easier jobs he had ever done, despite all of what happened. Little is known of what became of him and it is unknown if one of his assignments finally proved to be fatal.

Role PMs

Alejo de Lula
You are Alejo de Lula.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/alejodelula-1.png

Age: 32
Occupation: Unlicensed Doctor

Background:

Only a month ago you were a successful surgeon on the bustling colony world of Ursa Minor. Life was good enough, except perhaps for the outrageous loans you had to repay, but you had a steady job in a good clinic, a decent enough home, great friends and enough free time to enjoy your life. That was until you lost your license from an alleged malpractice that led to the death of a man on the operating table. In the following week, you lost you home to your creditors. You were getting desperate, there was no way you could practice again and starting off anew, after more than a decade of study for your degree, seemed like an impossible task.

Furthermore, you learned soon afterward that the man you had allegedly killed had a wife and she was scouring the system for you. You had no idea how much she knew, since the clinic had covered up everything, but you had a feeling you did not want to meet her. Fortunately, salvation came with a call from Ira Conglomerate, the corporation running the resort planet of the same name. They didn't give many details, except that you'd earn more than at the clinic and that eventually they'd make your problems go away. All you had to do was board a passenger liner heading there and they would take care of you. Anything was better than staying on Ursa Minor with your current problems, right? So you took your place on the passenger liner...

Abilities:

Doctor: You are a competent surgeon, despite what others have claimed. Every night phase you can choose one person to protect. If harm comes to that person, you have a chance of saving their life (30%). If the ship's medbay is repaired, your chance of saving lives increases substantially (60%).

Repair (Mechanical): 2 – You are smart and what you can't understand, you'll learn with only a few explanations.

Repair (Electronical): 2 – You are smart and what you can't understand, you'll learn with only a few explanations.

Combat Rating: 1 – You never were much of fighter, especially since you were very busy studying for much of your younger years.

Victory Conditions: Alejo de Lula must survive as well as five other people. (50% total of surviving passengers) Having people in “holding” following a “lynch”counts as them surviving.

Amy Glenn
You are Amy Glenn.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/amyglenn.png

Age: 18
Occupation: Foster Child

Background:

As an orphan, you have led a troubled childhood. Between the many foster homes and the halfway houses where you lived when you ran away, you haven't really had a place to call home. That isn't to say you haven't managed well enough to this point, or at least that's how you see it. Despite your supposedly socially unacceptable behavior, you've managed to stay out of the judiciary system, be it by your wits or sheer luck.

For the past few years you've been living with a decent family and you've come to accept that it isn't really their fault you are unhappy. From past experience, you know you could have landed with worse. So you haven't ran away, but that doesn't mean you don't sneak off from time to time and disappear for whole days.

Last night was such a time, when you sneaked out to celebrate your eighteen birthday down in the lower levels of Belphoron with your friends, even though you knew your foster family had planned an interplanetary trip with you for that very birthday. The ship was leaving in the morning, you had plenty of time. The party was fun and a variety of drugs were available. You took a strange little pink pill, which didn't seem to do much, but made you queasy. It didn't stop you from enjoying yourself and when you boarded the transport the next morning, with your foster family, you figured it would pass after a day or two in one of the sleeping pods.

Abilities:

Unstable: For the moment you are fine, but in a few hours the drug will kick in again, making you psychotic (After the 5th night phase, if you are still alive, you will become a serial killer.)

Repair (Mechanical): 1 – You never had much interest for mechanical things, but you could help if someone told you what to do.

Repair (Electronical): 1 – You never had much interest for electronics things, but you could help if someone told you what to do.

Combat Rating: 2 – You've had to brawl a few times to survive.

Victory Conditions: Amy Glenn must survive.

Andrei Kerensky
You are Andrei Kerensky.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/andreikerensky.png

Age: 64
Occupation: Retired Engineer

Background:

You've had a long and fulfilling life. Your childhood was fairly happy and simple, even though your family wasn't wealthy, all your basic needs were met. You followed a very technical education and at the age of nineteen, you signed on the merchant navy plying the interstellar trade routes. You started as a mere deckhand, but through hard work and competence, you rose to the position of chief engineer. During that time you got married, had three children, got divorced, married again, had another child and finally got divorced again. Your long absences due to your job broke any family you tried to create, but you got used to that.

Now you have decided to finally to indulge yourself after thirty-five years of hard work. It is a well deserved retirement gift to yourself and after a month or two on the paradisaical Ira, you plan on spending time with your children and your hopefully soon to be grandchildren. You only need to get there and so, for the first time, you voyage through the vastness of space as a mere passenger.

Abilities:

Engineer: When you work on ship's system, you are able to know exactly how far work has progressed after the current “night phase” has ended. (When you get you results for the “night”)

Repair (Mechanical): 4 – This is your area of expertise after all.

Repair (Electronical): 2 – You don't know much about electronical systems, but have been exposed to them on your many years of service aboard starships.

Combat Rating: 1 – You have experienced a mostly physical life, you are fit, but you are also old.

Victory Conditions: Andrei Kerensky must survive.

Christy Hart
You are Christy Hart

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/christyhart-1.png

Age: 37
Occupation: Criminologist

Background:

You are a native of Ursa Minor, a moderately populated world with nothing very special to differentiate it from the hundreds of other world humanity has colonized. You came from a middle class background and studied in a good university. Interested by puzzle and people, you studied sociology, psychology and finally criminology. For the past twelve years you have been studying the criminal minds of Ursa Minor, from petty thieves to murderers.

A short time after you ended your studies, you met someone of your liking and a few years later got married. You both planned to form a family, but your work kept you busy. You had no idea how little time you would both have together. About a month ago, your husband went to a medical center to undergo surgery. He never came back out. The incident was ruled as malpractice and the medical center sent you a hefty compensation package. Yet, they would not reveal the name of the doctor who had killed your husband, citing corporate policy. This was an unacceptable answer for you and so you took an indefinite leave from your important work to find this person. Using the funds provided by the medical center you managed to find out that this person was leaving Ursa Minor. Without a doubt in your mind, you followed.

Abilities:

Profiling: Having studied facial expression to a great extent for your work, you can know if someone is lying or not. Every “Night Phase” you can choose a person to examine for the next “Day Phase”. At the end of the next “Day Phase” you will learn if that person has lied or not during that “Day Phase”. (It is recommended to send three choices in order of preference, in case your preferred target is killed.)

Repair (Mechanical): 1 – You've never had much mechanical experience, but could lend a hand in if given instructions.

Repair (Electronical): 2 – You've had some experience with computers.

Combat Rating: 2 – As an employee of the Citizen Protection Bureau (CPB) you've received some combat training.

Victory Conditions: Christy Hart must survive and you must expose the person who killed your husband.

Diedrich White
You are Diedrich White

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/deidrichwhite-1.png

Age: 48
Occupation: Mad Scientist

Background:

They said you were mad, that your theory of creating a wormhole by creating a hyperspace window in a star's corona to blast it open was completely crazy and unfounded. First, they scoffed at your research, then they mocked your analysis and finally you became a pariah in the scientific community. Yet, that didn't deter you. No, you always knew they would reject the truth. That these faithless minions of orthodoxy would disregard and even smother anything that didn't fit their mindset.

Nevertheless, you would show them, you would open their eyes. I took you over a decade to compile all the data you required, for without any grants, any help and making sure to stay hidden, even a genius such as yourself was severely strained. Now that you have the data, all that remains is to prove your theory. Of course, you don't have the resources to acquire a ship to test the theory and no one would willingly help you test it anyways. The only way would be to hijack a passenger liner, reprogram its navigation algorithms, nothing too complicated for someone who is brilliant and resourceful. Everyone aboard, including you, would die, but it was a small price to pay to prove your theory to the rest of mankind.

Abilities:

Mad Scientist: You are brilliant, no matter what others say. Every time you help others repair the ship, you actually sabotage the repairs done in your area, making them progress 20% slower. (rounded up)

Repair (Mechanical): 0 – You don't want to help repair the ship.

Repair (Electronical): 0 – You don't want to help repair the ship.

Combat Rating: 2 – What you lack in training and brawn, you make up in passion for your cause.

Victory Conditions: The passenger ship XJY-0745295 must reach the sun and as such it must not be repaired. You do not need to survive to accomplish your victory condition.

Edward
You are Edward.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/edward-1.png

Age: 8
Occupation: Being a kid

Background:

In all you short life, you have only known change and displacement. You do not know where you were born, only that your parent left that place soon afterward. For as long as you remember, you have traveled and you don't know where, but frankly, you don't care. For a time, you thought it was quite neat to travel among all those pretty little stars, they reminded you of all those sparkly gemstones your mother carries. (Although you don't know why she keeps on hiding them; they are quite pretty after all.) A few years ago you asked her if the gems came from those stars, and in that cryptic way adults have of answering, she simply nodded sheepishly and smiled.

Now, you are not so keen on this traveling anymore. You don't get to make any friends, you feel lonely and there isn't much to do following your parents around. Luckily, your they promised this would be one of the last trip since they had almost «#made it#», whatever that means. You hope they were telling the truth, because you'd really like to live a normal life like other kids and you know, actually have friends.

Abilities:

Innocent: As a young child you have been absolved of the killings since you surely could not have done them. You cannot be lynched.

Minor: Adults do not usually give much responsibility to children, they also don't take them seriously. You may not vote during the day phase.

Sneaky: Having already traveled in similar starships, you know many nooks and cranny in which you can hide, especially with your small stature. You have a 50% chance to survive any attack. Furthermore, you know how to navigate the myriad of small ventilation shafts that riddle the ship. You have a 10% of spotting someones activities during the night phase.

Repair (Mechanical): 0 – You have no experience with machines and technical work and no one would actually trust you to repair anything.

Repair (Electronical): 0 – You no expertise with computers and electonics band no one would actually trust you to repair anything.

Combat Rating: 0 – Fighting? Against adults? Yeah, good luck with that.

Victory Conditions: Edward must survive and the murderer of his parents must die.

Eve Saint-Claire
You are Eve Saint-Claire also known as “Vox”

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/evesaintclare.png

Age: 28
Occupation: Cyber-Terrorist

Background:

“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” -George Orwell

You live by a code. Find the truth and spread it. Born in a wealthy family, you had access to some of the best education on Alpha Endi and you studied to become a software engineer. It took little time for you to be employed Hollerback Institute, a massive research institute, as a security expert to protect their precious data. You were making a good living, independent of the wealth of your family and to the eyes of everyone else, you seemed to be living a fulfilling life. That was not the case, as an informed self-professed intellectual, you began to see the political institutions of most worlds, created since the colonization, for what they were; oppressive oligarchies mired with secrets and often deeply intertwined with the stellar corporations. Their continued existence was mainly possible because of the continuous ignorance and apathy of the population they governed.

Digging through your employers files, you found that the Hollerback Insistute was no different. Two months later, Evelyn Gravas had been erased from every known databank. Coincidentally around the same time, multiple damning secrets from the Hollerback Insistute were leaked to the public by a new presence on the Hypernet, Vox.

It has been now three years since you became Vox. For three years you have led a crusade for truth through multiple star systems and it has been costly. You live on the run, in fear of being caught. Your enemies are countless and they are getting dangerously close. You took this ship to leave Belphoron in a hurry under the name Eve Saint-Claire after you found your team dead. You are certain the person who did the deed is only one step behind you and perhaps he is even on the same ship as you.

Abilities:

Electronics Expert: When you work on ship's system, you are able to know exactly how far work has progressed after the current “night phase” has ended. (When you get you results for the “night”)

Repair (Mechanical): 1 – You've never fiddled much with mechanical parts.

Repair (Electronical): 4 – This is your area of expertise.

Combat Rating: 1 – You are more confortable fighting via the Hypernet than physically.

Victory Conditions: Eve Saint-Claire must survive.

Jake Harris
You are Jake Harris.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/jakeharris-1.png

Age: 31
Occupation: Preacher

Background:

It was an inescapable fact, that as humanity took to the stars, religion had to redefine itself. The choice was either to accept the multitude of new changes and dilute their core message or stay rigid in their present doctrine. No religion embraced the infinite possibility of the cosmos like the Universal Way, a fairly new religion, which holds to no specific higher power, simply serving as a moral compass and letting the practitioner define his or her own spirituality.

An orphan, you were raised by a group of traveling preachers of the Universal Way. You did not lead a very eventful childhood, but it was simple and satisfying. When you came of age, it was your turn to find your own spirituality in the Universal Way and then, as those who raised you, you decided to travel and preach to those who would listen. Living off charity and the funds of the Way wasn't always easy, but faith manages. What you hold dearest about the message of the Universal Way is that all life is sacred and it is the driving force behind your faith.

Abilities:

Preaching: During each "Night Phase" you can choose to preach the Universal Way to another person. This person cannot perform any actions during that "Night Phase", including repairs.

Repair (Mechanical): 1 – You have little experience with machines and technical work, even less with starships, but you could always lend a hand if someone tells you what to do.

Repair (Electronical): 1 – You never had much expertise with computers and electonics but you could always lend a hand if someone tells you what to do.

Combat Rating: 1 – You are a man of peace.

Victory Conditions: Jake Harris must survive and not participate in the killing of another person. (This includes a lynch to kill.)

Jin Sung
You are Jin Sung.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/jinsung-1.png

Age: 38
Occupation: Painter

Background:

You were born on Alpha Centauri, the first human colony, in a wealthy family. Your early childhood was spent in luxury and lush landscapes. That was until the Galactic Finance Crash of 2752, when your parents lost nearly everything and committed suicide. You were soon adopted and raised in a much simply environment. It was hard to cope at first, but as the years passed you led an average childhood, going to school and playing with friends. By your late teenager years you had taken an interest in art and your foster parents supported you, promising you to help you enter the college of you choice. Sadly, it was not meant to be, as all your application were refused, claiming you had talent, but it was too unrefined.

Undaunted, you decided that if it wasn't meant to be here, it might be elsewhere. So you left home and joined the crew of a starship whose pretentious captain wanted an old fashion portrait of himself. For eight years, you jumped for world to world and from ship to ship, until your travels finally took you to Belphoron. It was neither a pleasant planet, nor was it remotely beautiful and yet, while stopping a bar to consider your next move, you met the love of your life. Her life as a mere secretary wasn't exotic, but her spirit spoke to you only as a muse could. It didn't take you long to marry this woman, Zareen, and settle on Belphoron. For ten years you lived together, until her boss gave her two tickets to the planet Ira. It had been her dream to travel amongst the stars and so you decided to accompany on this special journey.

Abilities:

'Till death do us part: You know your wife, Zareen Sung, is innocent. Furthermore you cannot accuse her or vote against her. You can communicate with your wife outside of the thread. (PM, IM, QT...)

Repair (Mechanical): 3 – Having spent many years travelling aboard starships, you know the basics of how many systems work.

Repair (Electronical): 1 – You never had much expertise with computers and electonics but you could always lend a hand if someone tells you what to do.

Combat Rating: 1 – You traveled a lot and have seen many things, but you were never a man of violence.

Victory Conditions: Jin Sung and Zareen Sung must survive.

Reilly Banks
You are Reilly Banks.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/reillybanks-1.png

Age: 40
Occupation: Corporate Fixer

Background:

Even giants can be brought down and your purpose is to make sure that does not happen. You had a promising careers in the special forces of the Mere Commonality Defense Forces (MCDF), but a bad leg injury in your early twenties forced you to take an early retirement. At first your situation made you despondent, until Midrani Inc., an interstellar conglomerate, offered a position, seemingly as a consultant. Once inside, you were slowly tested, to insure you loyalty. Satisfied, Midrani Inc. arranged for your injury to be repaired at great cost, a debt they make sure you never forget. Suddenly, you became active again, but working for the private purposes of Midrani Inc. instead of the MCDF.

Your most recent assignment has been locating and eliminating the cyber-terrorist known only as “Vox”. On Belphoron you cornered your target's team and dispatched them, yet Vox eluded you. Nevertheless, you managed to catch up with your target on an interstellar transport leaving Belphoron. You still haven't identified who exactly is Vox, so eliminating your target will be tricky. One way might be eliminating all the passengers, but that would be very messy. Your employers would find it preferable to limit the bloodshed to a minimum. At worse, Vox continues to flee after leaving the transport and you pursue. Yet you remain uncertain you will get another chance like to accomplish your objective.

Abilities:

Killer: You have the ability to attack the other players during the Night Phase, you can attack anyone regardless of what you chose to repair, though you will make no real progress in repairs, since killing supersedes that action.

Pulser: You have the Pulser of the now deceased captain of the ship, it gives you a +4 bonus to your combat rating (Included). Nevertheless, despite its power, any murder made with the Pulser will inevitably mark you as the killer while it is in your possession. In each combat the Pulser is used, it loses 1d4 ammunition. (Current Ammo 23/26)

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/ANKSAR_ETP_pistol_by_sharp_n_pointy.png

Repair (Mechanical): 1 – You never had much interest for mechanical things, but you could help if someone told you what to do.

Repair (Electronical): 1 – You never had much interest for electronics things, but you could help if someone told you what to do.

Combat Rating: (3+4) 7 – You were trained to eliminate problems and you are quite good at it.

Victory Conditions: Reilly Banks must survive, Vox must be eliminated (If not already eliminated).

Susann Becker
You are Susann Becker.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/susannbecker-1.png

Age: 29
Occupation: Killer

Background:

At first, they called you a troubled youth when you started beating up the other kids of the foster home. Then it escalated in school, as you bullied and viciously attack anyone who gave you the slightest provocation. Then, they said a military school would straighten you out. That lasted all of two years during which you simply took the time to become more deadly until you decided to beat a superior officer to a bloody pulp, the man barely surviving.

At age twenty, you were imprisoned after a summary court martial for your actions, but that simply gave you a new playground for the next five years. During that time, you learned to refine your aggression, keep it concealed, until you unleashed it on an unsuspecting victim. You slowly became a killer and when you got out of prison, your killing became something more, it became an art. You experimented, from world to world, you left your mark. Eventually tough, you grew bored of this, after perhaps twenty to thirty victims in four years, the killing didn't have the visceral appeal it used to have. You knew you had to move on to something bigger, grander.

The idea came to you in your travels, a starship was the perfect place for a mass killing, it was self contained and isolated. More importantly, everyone aboard would be asleep in their pods. Knowing of a drug that would keep you conscious despite the pod's effects, you decided you would kill each one of the two hundred and more passenger and crew individually. Quite simply, you would lock the pods one by one and turn off their life support, this way you would see every victim struggle helplessly for a few minutes before their death.

Unfortunately, you were almost done when you hit the pod of the ship captain. Unknown to you, he was not the victim you expected and in his struggle, he pulled out a gun, punching a hole through the glass of his pod. He then freed himself, but not before you wounded him grievously with your butterfly knife. Immediately, weapon still in hand and bleeding profusely, he went to the master controls and released everyone from their pods. Luckily, you were quick enough to reach your own pod before anyone awoke, while the valiant captain finished choking on his blood and died.

Now you just have to get rid of these eleven survivors and will have elevated your art to a whole new level.

Abilities:

Killer: You have the ability to attack the other players during the Night Phase, you can attack anyone regardless of what you chose to repair, though you will make no real progress in repairs, since killing supercedes that action.

Psychotic: You are mentally unstable and out for blood, you cannot spend two consecutive Night Phases without attacking someone.

Butterfly Knife: You have a concealed butterfly knife on your person which gives you a +3 bonus to your combat rating. (Included)

Repair (Mechanical): 1 – You never had much interest for mechanical things, but you could help if someone told you what to do.

Repair (Electronical): 1 – You never had much interest for electronics things, but you could help if someone told you what to do.

Combat Rating: (3+3) 6 – Your life of violence has made you an increasingly efficient killer.

Victory Conditions: Susann Becker must survive, everyone else must die.

Zareen Sung
You are Zareen Sung.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/The_Flax/All%20Those%20Pretty%20Stars/zareensung-1.png

Age: 36
Occupation: Executive Assistant for the Osterbaak Corporation

Background:

You grew up on the industrial colony world of Belphoron and as part of the lower classes, you struggled to gain a basic education in order to escape the crass undercity. Your parents were quickly stuck in dead end jobs to make ends meet, while your siblings either followed their footsteps or fell in with the seedier elements of the neighborhood. At some times, only your dream to reach the stars kept you going. When you finally crawled your way up to the tall spires of the richer folks, you realized how your education was poor. Nevertheless, you persevered and got work as part as a cleaning detail for one of the large corporations.

One day your orderly disposition got the better of you and you took it upon yourself to rearrange the entire office of an executive of the Osterbaak Corporation. Expecting to be fired when you were called to his office the following morning, you instead received the position of his assistant. Its mostly a thankless job, but better than you ever previously had. Soon afterward, you met the man who would be your husband, Jin Sung, a wandering painter who had traveled to many worlds. Now, ten years later, your boss gave you two tickets to the planet Ira as a birthday present. Your dream would finally come true and your husband would be at your side for the whole ride.

Abilities:

'Till death do us part: You know your husband, Jin Sung, is innocent. Furthermore you cannot accuse him or vote against him. You can communicate with your husband outside of the thread. (PM, IM, QT...)

Repair (Mechanical): 1 – You have little experience with machines and technical work, even less with starships, but you could always lend a hand if someone tells you what to do.

Repair (Electronical): 1 – You never had much expertise with computers and electonics but you could always lend a hand if someone tells you what to do.

Combat Rating: 2 – You don't look like much, but having grown up in a bad neighborhood, you know how to fend for yourself.

Victory Conditions: Zareen Sung and Jin Sung must survive.

What determined why Diedrich killed me rather than vice versa? Was it his choice of weapon for the night?

I'm kind of curious about that too; as I told Secura earlier today, my shock at the start of the last day was totally unfeigned (helped by the results PM not having arrived yet). I had no idea that was possible.

So I lose as mafia! You can all stop overestimating me now! :)

Congrats to CB especially, and also to Niklas, split and ArpeggiateTHIS. Good job.

Haha to Winston; we can be losers together. :)

Many thanks to Flaxy for the game; as you know, I greatly enjoyed it despite the difficulties, not least being the two most challenging days for me coming on days I could barely be present. 24-hour day phases and me as mafia don't mix well. C'est la vie. The only real complaint I'd have, not yet being privy to the balancing issues and so forth, is that my role as set up WIFOMed itself -- in order to "do my job", so to speak, I had to make myself the most obvious suspect to be doing exactly what I was doing. When I got chucked in the sleeping pod (argh Sundays) it was all over but the shouting; it's astonishing (and might actually be a balancing mistake) that I came as close as I did to winning.

I very much enjoyed the overall setup of the game, and the challenge and fun of roleplaying with the character I had. I'd like to do it again sometime. Thanks again.

What determined why Diedrich killed me rather than vice versa? Was it his choice of weapon for the night?

Mechanics:

Combat was calculated using the characters combat rating, adding a weapon rating if used and then adding this total to a dice roll (d6). To make things a little less luck based, I made it the best out of three. (In your case, autolycus, Renata just got better rolls, since you were even.)

Repair was handled by adding the repair stat of every person working on the system who didn't do night actions. Both engines and navigations needed 25 points to be repaired, while the medbay needed 10 points.

Concepts

The driving concept behind the game was that anyone could try just about anything, provided it was justified by who the character was. The Role PMs were just a baseline of what you could do. Anyone could kill if they justified it to me, people could pick up weapons for defense if they asked, lots of stuff was possible and imagination was the limit. That's why Winston Hughes hostage taking worked. I guess I didn't hint enough at that.

The other driving concept behind the game, was that everyone would have their own victory condition. I wanted to push people to be looking out for themselves in most cases. This didn't really work, but I don't begrudge any of you for playing a more team oriented game.

Thanks for the game Flax! I enjoyed it, watching mostly because some maniac killed me on night 2. Not sure why, I was only a poor and defenseless preacher :bigcry:

My role, as a roleblocker, was hard to figure because I had to decide between repairing and preaching, and even though my usefulness as a repairman was doubtful, I didn't think it was a good idea to roleblock instead of repairing. Not only would I not participate in the repairing effort, but I would also prevent someone else from helping. So yeah, I didn't roleblock on day 1. Not sure what was my best option really. Roleblocking would have been useful to eliminate a suspect if a murder happened (but we now know that nobody was murdered on day 1)

On day 2 I wanted to roleblock Split, he wasn't helping, but I was killed.

That's why Winston Hughes hostage taking worked. I guess I didn't hint enough at that.Indeed, you should have hinted more about that. I never knew about that until yesterday. Not that I would have done anything different: my character was a man of peace, and I doubt that you would have agreed that I attacked someone. But others would have played differently. I guess everyone would have rushed to the kitchen to get the biggest knife around :laugh4:

Congrats to everyone, winners and losers all the same! Technically I lost but I'm going to ignore it and pretend that I won. :laugh4: I was a townie and we caught the mean guys, hurray I won! :party3:

yyyyyyeeeeeeaaaahhhhhhh...

I think that's my first (marginal) victory out of three games played. Of course, the majority of the credit goes to the rest of the crew for being so investigative.

Great game there, I should have signed up for it earlier and avoided the reserves list.

Good; I think mafia's boring if you can't enjoy it as a team effort, and it's why I think the victories are partly thanks to me for pointing out the serial killer and saboteur... oh, and for dying and thus helping Niklas win as well.

My own goals might have been forfeit when I began to draw greater attention to myself, but it doesn't mean I was unable to help everyone else find the culprits while I was still alive; team player. :P

I was just sad, because I was basically a coinflip away from winning by locking myself in a sleeping pod. Also, your updated role Pm, saying I wasn't allowed to keep weapons made me less likely to think outside the box.

Commentary (In spoilers because it is pretty big)

Pre game:

All Those Pretty Stars, in name and in concept, has been burgeoning in my head for over a year. Back when I first started to think about this game, I had three months of mafia under my belt. It is a good thing I was so busy at the time, for I feel I would have made a poorer game. Fast forward to March 2010, having finished for now with university, I decided to revisit All Those Pretty Stars and alter a few things. For one, I was going to cut back on the background info of the characters (for example, Zareen Sung had two pages of background story) and I was going to up the production values. I had three goals in mind for this game.

Goals:

Make sure the players and I have fun.

Make a storydriven rpg mafia game.

Have some of the best production values for a small game.

Signups:

In April the signups began and I was suprised, if pleased, that in the first few days I had a third of my players.

I am pleased to see the veteran CFC players take the mafia (Diedrich White/Renata), the serial killer (Susann Becker/Winston Hughes), the emergent serial killer (Amy Glenn/Methos) and the neutral who could easily turn serial killer (Reilly Banks/Niklas).

Town will have some formidable opponents to vanquish there, I think. I'm glad to see Renata finally in a mafia role (the first on the Org, I think?) and I've heard good things about Winston Hughes mafia skill, so Susann Becker is in good hands. I'm also curious to see if Niklas will take Reilly Banks in the pro-town direction, become a serial killer or remain neutral.

Other signups are all around good of course. Askthepizzaguy grabs Edward as the first pick, it will be very interesting to see how he plays this with no vote and a lynch immunity. Secura takes the hunted Eve Saint-Claire, though she doesn't know that yet, that will pit her against Niklas. Split takes Christy Hart, let's see what he does with the “detective” of this game, while new comer jillyfae takes Alejo de Lula, the doctor. Taking Jin Sung probably would make for an easier first game, but that shouldn't be a problem. Christy Hart and Alejo de Lula are an interesting pair, much as Reilly Banks hunts Eve Saint-Claire, Christy Hart hunts for Alejo de Lula, though unlike the first match up, she doesn't know what she'll do when she finds him. Its potentially much less deadly. Nevertheless, I'm eager to see how both matchups are resolved.

Finally, Captain Blackadder takes Andrei Kerensky, nothing much to say here, he's a solid character. Romanic takes Jake Harris, saying he looks tough. I wonder what he'll think when he finds out that Jake Harris is in fact a pacifist. Beefy lands Zareen Sung and gets Psychonaut (Jin Sung) as his husband. I think they are in the same timezone, so that should make using their special ability to chat together more practical.

All in all, I'm not disappointed at all by letting players pick their characters.
A few hours before the game starts, Romanic seems to really want to talk out of thread with people, doesn't fit too much with what I had in mind for the game. If more people really want to speak out of the thread, I'll figure out a way that keeps to the spirit of the game.

Renata feels she will be in trouble as mafia without a kill, personally I think she'll do fine. Its interesting, we are now about 8h before the game and she nearly triggered one of the conditions for gaining a new ability, asking me for it or telling me her character needs to kill to accomplish his victory. I've tried dropping a hint, I wonder if she'll catch on.

Day 1:

Off to a good start and I'm glad people are getting into their characters. At this point, they won't know the saboteur is still aboard (some might suspect it), so Renata should be safe, same for Winston Hughes. The correct move here is No Lynch while splitting everyone evenly between the Engines and Navigation. If they are very well organized, they could also repair the Medbay, possibly in one night. If badly organized, repairing the Medbay will drain critical repair points.

Well, its now 45 min before end of day. All good roleplay performances for the day, though I'm sad Methos and Beefy didn't show up, the latter was expected though, due to being sick. I'm also disappointed that nearly half of the players haven't voted to repair something. At this point, its not critical, but it does not bode well for the town.

Night 1:

Not much to say here, no one sent in Night Orders, even those few who could do so without abandonning their repairs.

Winston Hughes is the second person to tell me his objectives are impossible, perhaps I made some mistakes in my design. What am I saying, I surely made some, but I thought it would work well enough. I'm going to insert a hint that he can change his abilities and thus perhaps his victory conditions. Doign the same for Renata, hinting she could kill if she wanted to.

Very pleased with Romanic starting up a conversation during the Night Phase, this game needs more posts, not less.

Day 2:

Accusations finally start flying. Unsurprisingly, ATPG is the one to open the ball. Niklas goes for an inactive, not sure why exactly and Renata bodly goes against the self-proclaimed chief engineer, this will pay off a good deal if she succeeds. Finally Romanic decides to join in the accusation game and votes Niklas' character, but not having unvoted, it doesn't count.

In the end, its not surprising that votes are as scattered as the repair actions. Beefy and Romanic get caught in the repair: Medbay trap. The town shouldn't be wasting time with it unless both the Engines and Navigation are being repaired at a good pace, which is not the case.

Night 2:

Split decides to use his lie detection ability for the next day, on ATPG? Hmm, interesting choice. Then Romanic decides to ditch his repairs and roleblock Split for the night. Finally, Winston Hughes decides to murder Romanic. Now I have to say, receiving only three night orders, in that order, was pretty freakish.

I'm sad to see Romanic die, he did some great roleplaying for this game, but this is a good pick from Winston Hughes I think, removing not only an active player, but the game's sole roleblocker.

Day 3:

Renata renews her attack on Captain Blackadder but ultimately this is doomed to fail. I feel I gave her a nearly impossible role and in hindsight, should have made sabotage less easy to pinpoint. She is targeted as the saboteur and put to rest in a pod, the first lynch of the game. Nevertheless, she is still alive, though now there is little hope of her attaining her main objective. My fear was making it too hard to repair the ship, thus ending the game very quickly, so I guess I went the other way and made it somewhat too easy. (To her credit, Renata didn't complain about her nearly impossible situation ) I do hope they let her out eventually so she can have a bit of revenge.

Rest of the players seem to be mobilizing for repairs, that's good.

Night 3:

Not much to report here. Winston Hughes decides not to kill, citing that's it probably a terrible move. I don't think so actually. I gave his character a compulsion to kill because I was afraid there were be no kills before the ship was repaired, thus sapping some of the tension. I think its in the best interest of the SK to make sure the ship gets repaired and that means killing strategically.

Day 4:

Pretty awful day. After Day 3, I expected more activity, not less. Only four votes are lodged, half of them for No Lynch and only five players join in for repairs. I'm really not getting people not voting and showing up to repair or people doing the opposite. This marks another day without a post by jillyfae, so I'm going ahead and asking one of the replacements to take her place. Hopefully it will add more activity to the game, just like autolycus' replacement of Methos. (Of which I'm very satisfied.)

Night 4:

Winston Hughes decides to kill Beefy. Not the best of choices in my opinion, but its a clean kill. It does get rid of one of the mason team though. Repairs are abysmal, but at least Renata is in a pod and not doing sabotage. They can still repair the ship. Split decides to use his lie detection ability on Winston Hughes, which is brilliant, but it now remains to be seen if he exploits the ability, say by accusing Winston and thus see if he is lying in his defense. ArpeggiateTHIS joins as a replacement for jillyfae and his immediate activity is promising. For the first time the doctor actually protects someone (Secura).

Day 5:

Askthepizzaguy doesn't seem to understand he cleared three, yes three!, people of being the killer in one night action, instead thinking only that Secura is innocent. (Okay, Beefy died anyways, so that wasn't much help.) It seems the general consensus is to release Renata because it is assumed she is innocent, since she can't be the killer. This is a grave mistake and Renata will be joining the Engine repairs to sabotage them. In the end Split is chosen to be locked in a pod, it doesn't change much since he chose to repair Navigation, which Secura can repair by herself. In the end, there are a lot of people who choose to repair de Engines, but it is not enough with Renata's presence. Captain Blackadder is sorely missed in that department.

Addendum: It seems I missed Captain Blackadder's repair action. By pointing that out he just saved everyone from dying. Good catch.

Night 5:

I am deeply puzzled that I am receiving night orders from people working on the engines. Both ArpeggiateTHIS and Winston Hughes decide to do their own things, which sacrifices their repair points for the night. This, combined with Renata's sabotage gives a result of the engines being repaired, but just barely.

As for those actions, ArpeggiateTHIS decides to protect autolycus and Winston Hughes decides to kill Psychonaut. Poor Sungs, I guess they were not attracting enough attention.

The ship is repaired, both Engines and Navigation are done just in time. This means Renata has failed her victory condition (it was pretty hard anyway). She gets to choose between becoming a Serial Killer out of revenge or just trying to survive the rest of the game. She picks the Serial Killer option.

At the same time, the emergent Serial Killer, autolycus, comes into to play. The twist is that he only has to kill people who by day's end have voted for him (excluding himself) and survive to win. Immediately, he wants to go pure townie and wants to intern himself in a sleeping pod, so everybody wins. That is comendable, but somewhat against the spirit of the role. Nevertheless, autolycus has been a great replacement for Methos, I won't put any roadblocks in his way.

Day 6:

autolycus begins the round with his plan to pod himself to avoid being a serial killer, but this is soon derailed with Secura who comes out of virtually nowhere to accuse Winston Hughes. Wow. She is spot on,though I did laugh a bit at “I don't think Amy is the killer”... well, not yet. Hehe. For some reasons ATPG speaks out against calling for help. Why? Why in fiction do people never call the cops? Heh, oh well, Hyperjump is more boring I guess but it is also more certain. Votes begin to pile in on Winston Hughes and his situation looks pretty desperate. He posts to take APTG hostage and PM me telling me I can't blame him for trying. I am in fact extatic, this is exactly the sort of thing I had in mind when I created All These Pretty Stars. I just have to make it work, somehow.

In the end ATPG dies with Winston Hughes due to an unlucky dice roll. It is still more than worth it for everyone still alive, since Winston Hughes had the second most powerful character in combat ability.

Night 6:

Renata targets Secura and autolycus sends me a PM saying he is sick of Renata's accusations and will try to kill her. Interesting. I decide to do the Renata/Secura fight first and it is no suprise that Renata wins that. Now, against autolycus, they both have a 50/50 chance of winning and the dice are in favor of Renata again, like against Secura. I'll just lump the murders together to be found. ArpeggiateTHIS decides to protect autolycus, but fails the rolls required to save him. Only one killer left.

Day 7:

Unsurprisingly, Renata is the lynch target, by a close margin since Split doesn't show up. There is little discussion and little to add here. With Renata dead, its pretty much game over and various degrees of victory for the surivors. I'll add one more night to keep a bit of suspense.

Night 7:

I neither expect orders nor do I receive any, so I begin writing the finale before the phase even ends. Just as I post it, an hours after the night phase deadline, I realize Nilkas has send an order to kill ArpeggiateTHIS. A host really shouldn't take anything for granted it seems. Fortunately, Niklas is kind enough to let me keep the current finale and end the game without him killing.

Closing Comments:

Well, I had a lot of fun hosting this and I don't regret all the hours I spent preparing this game. Though, throughout the game I found myself more and more displeased with some of the design decision and some things I include in the game were just plain stupid. The sabotage thing for example was practically impossible for Renata to accomplish if everyone had repaired either the engines or navigation, only inactivity permitted her to almost win.

This experiment has convinced me to try my hand at another game, not sure exactly when though. I will most certainly bring in external help this time, to better balance things. My current idea is nothing like All Those Pretty Stars, but you can be certain it will feature roleplaying and character driven storylines.

Thank you all for playing.

Nice stuff Flax. I like when the host keep a journal like that.

Yeah, I prefer when we can chat privately about the game, I like the uncertainty that comes with it. When everyone speaks in the thread, there's no surprises, there's no private scheming.

You can forbid private talks but have a mechanism within the game that would let player speak privately. For example, each player could have the possibility to send one private message to another, each turn through the host. The messages would be received at the end of each turn, so private talks would not be completely removed.

Also, reading that a player could do things on his own, would I have been able to write something on a piece of paper and give it to someone? So that what I wrote would be known only by this person...

Day 2:
[...]
In the end, its not surprising that votes are as scattered as the repair actions. Beefy and Romanic get caught in the repair: Medbay trap. The town shouldn't be wasting time with it unless both the Engines and Navigation are being repaired at a good pace, which is not the case.

After night 1, I knew, from my private writeup, that Renata was a bad mechanic and that Jin was a good one, and I figured repairing the engines again would not give me new information so I went for Med Bay instead to collect new data. Wasn't too sure if Med Bay was necessary, but anyway with skills at 1 everywhere, I didn't have the feeling that my contribution to any repairs was important.

Was I the only living townie who actually saw my death coming from a mile away?

I say this because Pizza absolved me of guilt through his investigation and the fact I nailed Winston and provided solid reasoning for Renata being the scum (albeit fueled by Blackadder's revelation about repairs) should have shown me to be a true townie, yet I died; an inherent part of my playstyle these days seems to be that I'm murdered by mafia because it's evident that I'm either a threat or that I'm never going to be lynched (nearly always the latter, I guess), which is precisely why I died in this game. Good choice of revenge kill, Renata... ya meanie. :P

Had I been in the Alejo's shoes though, I'd have been protecting Eve Saint-Claire every 'night' phase once it became clear she was town, but having seen the fact that the success rate was only 50% for protection anyway, it might not have made any difference. It's a bit of a shame that town abilities largely went to waste as well.

Still something to think about in future games, I feel, be they standard mafia or games with a similar flavour to this. :3

There wasn't really a town per se; you'll notice that, even though t'was me who pointed to Winston and Renata as being 'scum' and led the proverbial charge against them both, I was soundly defeated as well.

It was very much "everyone for themselves", following personal goals rather than any sort of main victory condition.
