Recently, I and some of my friends are debating about the existance of long hair, and short haired men, and they said that short hair men is a step towards more modern evolution, since short hair requires less maintenace, easier to be kept in order, and require less washing.

And they said that the way I kept my hair, shoulder length, usually kept in ponytail, is too much like a girl.... and when I start to argue that most men had grown long hair in medieval time, and no one questioned their manliness, they said that we should look in today's situation rather than some hundreds of years ago

so... just curious, how did you guys keep your hair...

short-medium, long hair for guys = the hobo look, in most instances.

hobo? why? I think the hobo overrides what was source of male pride for quite a long time, and give that negative connotation...

I'm growing my hair like Shemp from the three stooges (no associates please, with larry perhaps...). I like the old-fashioned look. It's almost at the right length. Looks nice when I put hair tonic in it.

Define Long. I know a guy who had it down to his hips.

Shoulder length isn't that long...but it still can be quite feminine, specially if it's in a ponytail.

That was my Wolf-Kataphract.....

is there something wrong? :clown:

And actually I first kept my hair in ponytail out of necessity in Chemistry lab (I study chemistry), since long hair must be tied up in neat fashion, but after that, it was becoming my common hairstyle....

Bald. Shave it once a weak so usually minimal growth at the end of the week.

not as that short, but still generally considered short (at upper neck and eyebrows)

I admit a slightly (!) long hairstyle fits me well.

Gorgeous and hip, thus semi-long.

Slightly below the top of my collar. Bohemian yet classic, or bobo if you must.

I don't have a hair style. My philosophy is that the longer my hair grows, and the shorter I cut it, the longer time will pass between each hair cut. Right now my hair is pretty short, I just got it to a length that I'd call "military short" last month; though in a few months time it'll be relatively long. ~;)

The men in medieval times also kept nice mustaches and beards. And big swords....That stuff complements long hair well. Without them.....I don't know.
Personally I keep my hair very short. No sweat at all, literally. And very comfertable during the terrible summers we get, and all the sandstorms.

Precisely. Facial hair shouts out to the world "I can look fabulous in a woman's haircut while remaining a concentrated chunk of masculinity". One reason the European colonists so looked down at native American tribes was their unfortunate lack of facial hair. Seeing this blite on humanity, many French fur traders set to work and spreading their hairy visages around, impregnating enough native women to create a whole nation. They did this believing it was on behalf of god, who had a great big beard and no doubt flagellated himself for overlooking an entire landmass unable to grow similar ones. The whole endeavour could be seen as a testament to French romance, as the vast majority of their wives willingly flung their families into the glamourous world of whiskers and beards, unlike the Spaniards, who only terrified the central Americans with deadly sharp goatees and other, curlier hairs.

My hair swept a bit to the side, and looks a bit like a looser mop-top.

That paragraph seems very negative over one of the most fabulous results of racial harmony in North Amerika, but whatever.

I usually cut my hair once a month. My clippers are 20mm(3/4in) and I reckon my hair gets about twice that long before I cut it again. I like short hair because there is absolutely no maintenance required(apart from 15min once a month) and my clippers cost me $25 two years ago which means that I have spent $1 a month on hair cuts. I think long hair is pretty girly and looks silly on men, but you can look girly if you want, it doesn't really bother me.

At the front, my hair reaches my chin.
At the side it reaches just below my shoulders.

My hair is mostly just tangled curls + frizz... naturally, it forms an afro! :afro:
So it's long AND manly AND fashionable* at the same time!! :2thumbsup:
Afros can also be low maintenance, particularly if it's naturally like that. It's not a complete thick frizz (solid ball of hair) either, which is great!

*fashionable being of fickle definition.

Also, I cut my hair annually. Saves money and time. It's been exactly one year since my last hair cut, so this is probably about as long as it gets under normal conditions.

Facial hair and long hair go together. If a man is going to grow out his hair, he should never shave.
But if you shave you must cut your hair. And if you cut your hair you must shave. At least, that's my philosophy.

Do you wear a crew-cut? Perhaps then you could hang with wally and the beav!

edit: I should read all the replys before I post...perhaps this should go out to anyone who wants to be unique. Mr. Cleaver wouldn't approve of facial hair though. Perhaps on Eddie it would be tolerated though.

I just ask for a two at the back and sides, which google-fu shows to mean 1/4 inch. Used to get a 3 but I'm lazy and it means it doesn't need cut quite as often.

It's the times and trends, basically. "Manliness" and evolution (lol ...) are irrelevant as I see it. I've had very short hair and very long hair. Currently it's probably longer than it's ever been; I keep it in a tail most of the time. I do this now because I have a typical bald spot forming on the top of my head :(. The hair from the from of my head covers it when I slick it back and tail it. Soon, this will not work, and I will go very, very short and accept the fact that my long-hair days are over. This is very sad for an ex-rock 'n roller.

Although I'm blessed with exceedingly thick hair, I imagine that this is comforting: though Julius Caesar himself went bald, he still ascended to the top. All is not lost, and the day is not done yet.

British romance? Dutch romance? You jest.

The Portuguese, with the strong latin roots in their language, might have laid claim to France's title. However, according to my American high school history textbook, Portugal has never exist and Brazilians speak Spanish.

In Britain, baldness (as in, shaving all your hair off, not the natural one with age) usually is associated with "hardened thugs" "neo-nazis" "bikers" "toughness" "skinheads" and other such labels. I heard this isn't apparently the case in America, but in other areas, is this true for there?

So all good and sane men in UK will have their hair kept long? Wow...
In my place, the long haired one (when dreadlocked), are hair code of criminals... that's why I care my hair with utmost care, but as far as I can tell, almost everyone who knows me on facebook will notice that my hair is identical with women's hairstyle, and coupled with my clean face.... a new acquintance usually tought me as a girl.... bah....

I used to have long hair down to my nipples. Really, it was pretty sick. Then I got dreadlocks that grew about down to my shoulders, had them for more then a year, but I got tired of people asking me "Sooo, if I smoked one of your dreadlocks would I get high? hahhahaha" so I cut them off last december.

No he means being completely shaved bald is associated with these things, hence "skinhead", I would presume most men would still have their hair somewhat short, just not bald.

Here certain types of people will shave their heads to make themselves appear "tough", it wouldn't be uncommon to see a bald bouncer or a few shaven heads in a bikie gang for example, but a shaven head isn't associated with being a thug. I know a few people who give themselves a "0" just because it's easy, they are perfectly normal people.

Well i dont know what age cencus you are talking about, but atleast here in Finland there are quite few other normal men besides me in their thirties that decide to shave their head completely when alternative is to start hiding the fact that they are starting to get bald. That was my motivation when i started the habbit at tender age of 27.

Yeah, I said that was a case for people who do it. But in all the drama, media and other things, you always have the "tough" "unpleasant" people with Skinheads, like a brandname for trouble in some sort of role like a bouncer, 'security', hitman, etc . Was just wondering/asking if that stereotype occurs over the ocean as well.
