Terry Jones' opinion on The Romaioi.

Has anybody here read Terry Jone's book <Barbarians: An alternative Roman History>? He may be a Monty Python, but his book is well cited and clear in source. He has casted much counter-arguments on the Romaioi's perspective of "Barbaroi"; implied how the One True Barbaroi are the Romaioi themselves: their whole existance subsists on killing and plundering all the other people....often more advance and sophistacated than themselves. He later on dips into Christianity and the likes, but I'll not mention them here lest I get burnt on a stake for herecy.

Who's read the book then? (Am I allowed to type up excerpts here?)

No - no, please NOT Terry Jones.... his medieval "Knight's Tale" alternative interpretation is simply hoorible and full of biased mistake... I do not mean that Romaioi is not a barbaroi... but Terry Jones' reputation in historical essays are simply awful....

*. Read his "Knight's Tale" (Chaucer's Knight: The Portrait of a Medieval Mercenary ) interpretation and you'll see how demented his brain is...

EDIT : Of course, he's right in the matter that Romaioi Barbaroi... but his other writings are definitely pointless....

I personally quite enjoyed his TV version of the book(or is it the other way round?). I'm quite clear those who have different ideas than some of us would react violently to this, please don't flame my topic and stay on topic.

I have doubt over the 'very latest scholarship' bit. but this book fits quite true to the spirit of EB: to portray the 'Barbaroi' or Europe in a correct light. :)

Given that his work has been attacked in two recent threads, both of which you participated in, I don't see why you need to bring it up again.

Jones' work fits the spirit of EB in that it wants to give the barbarians their due. However, EB's mission is to give every faction their due. Jones on the other hand seems mostly interested in making the Romans look bad.

Since I don't see this thread going anywhere, I am going to close it. PM if you disagree.
