Paper Telephone (also known as Eat Poop You Cat)

How to play

The first player begins by writing a sentence or phrase. This can be anything and in reference to anything. More surreal sentences tend to produce funnier final results. The next player then attempts to come up with an illustration that represents the sentence. Then the paper is folded over so that only the picture can be seen and is passed to the next player. Usually there are some restrictions on what can appear in the illustration to ensure that the third player cannot easily replicate the original sentence. For instance, numbers and letters can be forbidden. The next player then attempts to formulate a caption for the illustration. Once the third player has captioned the illustration, the paper is folded over so that only the caption can be seen, and is passed to the next player. This is continued until the game ends. There are a few different opinions as to when the game should end, but it should always end on a sentence, not an illustration. Therefore it is best played with an odd number of people. One variation says the game ends when every player has had a turn.

.org variant RULES:


Use Microsoft paint or any other image-creating software, and host the image on photobucket or some other site.
You may cut and paste bits and pieces of other images you find elsewhere, but do not post obscene content or anything in violation of .org policy.
Numbers and letters are discouraged, unless they are part of the image you cut and pasted and it has NOTHING to do with what you're trying to convey. I'll be the judge of that.
Players all get one turn to start off with, if we get enough players.
I will begin the game by being Player One. I will write a sentence and send it to player two.
Player two will create a crudely drawn image which is supposed to represent what player one wrote down, using no words, just drawings and images.
Player two sends the image (just the image) to player three.
Player three writes a caption for the image and sends the caption (just the caption) to player four.
Player four creates a crudely drawn image which depicts what the caption says, and so on, sends just the image to player five.
Continues until everyone has had a turn, and many turns have passed.
They all must send the caption and the images to the game host (Me) every turn as well, so I can monitor what is going on and make sure all images and captions are legal.
Captions must not be longer than 70 words.
Images need to fit on the forum comfortably, and let's keep the images under a certain size. Resize them if necessary, 800*600 is plenty big enough.

Yes. Open the file with Paint. This is accomplished many ways.

Right-click, Open With..... Paint.

No it's like, if you try to copy a picture in, it automatically crops it to the dimensions of the current canvas. In stuff like GIMP and Photoshop (What I"m used to) you can paste something into the file and move it around without cropping the edges until you set and rasterize the layer.

I was surprised how long sweden, scotsmen, and skis lasted. I guess those are easy to draw and comprehend. The stingrays didn't last too long though.

Sweden lasted about halfway through, until Double A's image. The skis lasted until ArpeggiateTHIS's image, then Splitpersonality did his caption. At that point it was nothing like the original image.

I have no idea what CDF was talking about. :laugh4: Perfect ending.

....but I totally blanked the chain smoking part. My bad. Did you notice how the 2-year old has Prince Valiant's haircut? Yes, I managed to get the "valiant" part in pictographic form. I win the thread. :smoking:

Splitpersonality's caption basically captures the essence of the image without adding too much to the previous caption or taking away from it. The green hill was just to take away the empty background space, but Split added that to the caption, along with the sun and clouds. No matter, surely the green hill, sun and clouds won't reappear, right?

Death is yonder's picture makes some minor changes. The baby is holding the banana and the gun is floating, and instead of the spam attacking, it seems the baby is holding him hostage (yes, now the Spam is a person).

Also the explosion part of the silly string becomes totally for reals. So now we have nuclear string.

Subotan's caption turns the silly string explosion into a very not-silly atomic bomb explosion. Now the baby is a gangster, and the guy in the Spam suit apparently got promoted to CEO. Who says you can't advance from a dead-end job like suit-wearing.... advertisement.... guy.... thing? Now the hill is named BIG GREEN HILL and the sun is disapproving of everything. My goodness, who anthropomorphized mister sun? Was it you, Death is yonder? Yes it was. The sun's disapproval is yonder.

Romanic's picture turns our beloved Gangsta Baby into a dude in a banana suit, and the CEO of Spamcorp decided to shed his Spammy suit and now he's being robbed apparently. See the bag with the dollar sign? That means he's a bank robber. Also, mister sun who was just an ordinary sun I drew in the clouds so there would be less white space is now the artist who is drawing the sky. And he still hates the world.

Also, BIG GREEN HILL seems to be turned into a neon turtle floating in liquid pig shtinkies. Note how crazed the Banana man is. He's clearly off his gourd, and completely fruity. He can't tell apples from oranges, and I've appearantly run out of fruit-related humor, so let's move on.

The happy little sun I drew in the sky has gone from not-even-human-with-no-expression, to shy, to sad, to angry at the world, and now he's become so depressed he's given up on mankind! OH NOES!!!

Renata's picture does a good job with the BP executive logo and the greenpeace logo, so that idea should be easily passed along. It's apparent that she's attempting to convey all the information from the previous caption, but it's a little hard to follow unless you know what she's trying to say, in which case it's actually pretty genius. It makes perfect sense. Kudos, Renata. I also like the Xbox that the executive is trapped in. No red ring of death for him, just Xbox hell, and then nuking the oil rig.

In all seriousness it is pretty clear the BP executive's idea is to nuke the well, exclamation point. So yeah, let's see if it translates.

He makes a deal with three evil supervillains, which involves blowing up the Deepwater Horizons oil well, cutting down trees, and poisoning ninjas with rotten bananas. Then Uncle Pennybags plants a bomb and explodes New York City. This causes Satan's stock to rise. HOOORAY!!!

Joooray's image has turned the monacle guy into a doctor with six hands, (five on one arm) and a crooked arrow for a leg. He makes Neo and Smith very happy; Devil Inc's stock is rising because of 6-handed monacle doctor's evil scheming. There's a.... blue tree and a floating red goldfish, a bomb exploding, and an invisible lumberjack with a war axe, a ninja that kills bananas, and a helicopter flying towards... what seems to be 9/11.

Splitpersonality's caption basically captures the essence of the image without adding too much to the previous caption or taking away from it. The green hill was just to take away the empty background space, but Split added that to the caption, along with the sun and clouds. No matter, surely the green hill, sun and clouds won't reappear, right?

Death is yonder's picture makes some minor changes. The baby is holding the banana and the gun is floating, and instead of the spam attacking, it seems the baby is holding him hostage (yes, now the Spam is a person).

Also the explosion part of the silly string becomes totally for reals. So now we have nuclear string.



Subotan's caption turns the silly string explosion into a very not-silly atomic bomb explosion. Now the baby is a gangster, and the guy in the Spam suit apparently got promoted to CEO. Who says you can't advance from a dead-end job like suit-wearing.... advertisement.... guy.... thing? Now the hill is named BIG GREEN HILL and the sun is disapproving of everything. My goodness, who anthropomorphized mister sun? Was it you, Death is yonder? Yes it was. The sun's disapproval is yonder.

Romanic's picture turns our beloved Gangsta Baby into a dude in a banana suit, and the CEO of Spamcorp decided to shed his Spammy suit and now he's being robbed apparently. See the bag with the dollar sign? That means he's a bank robber. Also, mister sun who was just an ordinary sun I drew in the clouds so there would be less white space is now the artist who is drawing the sky. And he still hates the world.

Also, BIG GREEN HILL seems to be turned into a neon turtle floating in liquid pig shtinkies. Note how crazed the Banana man is. He's clearly off his gourd, and completely fruity. He can't tell apples from oranges, and I've appearantly run out of fruit-related humor, so let's move on.



ArpeggiateTHIS' caption turns the banana-related bank robber into an extremist working for Greenpeace. Now Spam-related CEO is no longer spam-related and he's the CEO of BP, and that's not pig feces, it's oil. Now the oil man is suggesting we nuke the well and stop the thing. The happy little sun I drew in the sky has gone from not-even-human-with-no-expression, to shy, to sad, to angry at the world, and now he's become so depressed he's given up on mankind! OH NOES!!!

Renata's picture does a good job with the BP executive logo and the greenpeace logo, so that idea should be easily passed along. It's apparent that she's attempting to convey all the information from the previous caption, but it's a little hard to follow unless you know what she's trying to say, in which case it's actually pretty genius. It makes perfect sense. Kudos, Renata. I also like the Xbox that the executive is trapped in. No red ring of death for him, just Xbox hell, and then nuking the oil rig.

In all seriousness it is pretty clear the BP executive's idea is to nuke the well, exclamation point. So yeah, let's see if it translates.



Chaotix' caption turns this 2-year old-turned gangsta baby-turned banana suit wearing bank robbing wierdo-turned greenpeace activist into the "Peace banana man". And so the banana never dies, but it transforms everything else around it. Stupid sun doesn't want to die either! And the atomic explosion/nuclear winter part, which remember, was just a can of silly string, has destroyed the entire world. Silly String, you've done it again!!!

Peanut Butter Jelly Time

Overall I think the game host does a good job with the commentary; I especially like the third-person way he refers to himself. I also like meta-jokes.

I'm thinking about doing a commentary for this commentary, but unfortunately Antonio Banderas isn't available to provide his perspective on Pele, the Wonder Mouse (who he voiced in the film adaptation of this game). You see him in the third scene after the epic banana versus ninjas battle in the third act, just before the bomb detonates in Times Square. He was eating some cheese next to the hobo. It was a truly heartwarming scene.

That was epic. I really enjoyed it, well the picture itself was complicated, but in the end it was totally worth it. Sorry about the 6 armed thing, I didn't know how else to draw.

Somebody should cover hosting this for ATPG, at least for the time being. He's busy enough trying to find time to host Star Fox, and this game doesn't require a whole lot beyond tranferring the captions and images.

Perhaps Subotan, Death is yonder, or someone who has already gone can cover it? Maybe Double A?

If ATPG agrees, and nobody else can do it, then I will volunteer myself to do so. Only catch is that I have a thin window of time for which I have internet access each day. Unless people are quick about these things, it's likely I can progress the game one stage per day. Then again, that's not much slower than this game is already moving.
