ok, ive read the post about the luk map files , i uderstand the basics. what im wanting to know to make it easy to make a different map, is could i remove all the provinces so i am left with just two, this would give me and idea of how all the other files .i.e building etc link to it (i.e just looking atthe stats for two states is alot easier than looking at them for the whole of europe) where are the files for the states of europe? can they be deleted to just leave 2 ?

lol i know its not that simple , but for me (a newbie modder) it would be alot easier to start modding a v.small area rather than the full map , it would give me the basic understanding of what links together etc. Then i could build the map up bit by bit to my own specifications http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

kyodai-britishbeef,

Your suggested approach sounds a bit like catch-22 to me.

If you want to remove all provinces except 2 from MTW, you must 1st know where all of the relevant files/stat's are that pertain to the 100 odd provinces your removing. Otherwise, you will probably find that MTW won't load if it still has some references to provinces you've removed from some file or other.

Once you've collated a list (presumably a long one&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif of exactly what needs to be removed in order for MTW to work correctly with just 2 provinces, you'll then know exactly what all the requirements are - so, there's no longer any point in doing it

I should also say that modding the campaign map is one hell of a tricky area ...

... which is why I steer well clear of it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

i am changing the campaign map for my mod completely
I dont know why the lukmap scares you people so much...

Once you have a template map (which is the hardest part really IMO), its just defining borders with the right pallete and then finding out which provinces are which ( you can simply write down the pallete number for each one of them and their borders)

im still looking for my basic map to use for my england mod... but it seems there are none out there big enough or plain enough... so i could end up drawing it by hand.. heaven forbid

try finding a map making suite... i searched google for a few minutes and found Campaign Cartographer 2 at ProFantasy (http://www.profantasy.com/)
It doesnt make very good looking maps, but they are good for planing and drawing good coasts/borders/rivers. It looks a bit complex at first, but after the tutorial (that lasts 3 minutes) its very easy. It also is quite limited so i am looking for a proper map drawing package.

With regaard to people having problems with
maps.
If you just want to change borders
including making a map of england and so on,
you could just copy and paste from the original
and make a patchwork type map.The hard part is still
coords, well the amount of them, that is.

modding the lukmap is not the problem with creating a new campaign, its modding the text files that is the real work.

A lukmap takes no time to produce, but the province origins, castle co-ords, port co-ords, province borders, border attributes, province attributes, and new starting positions for the factions - not to mention the new units 'n stuff which come with a new mod...its all that which takes the time

and bear in mind - even if you get rid of all that, you are only at first draft stage...

It is rather hard as I have found in my recent endevours into modding it, the reasons behind that will remain hush hush for now.

Basically for co-ordinates I think it uses pixels to go acorss and up so if you have PSP7 simply place your mouse point on the place you wish to place your port or castle etc and at the bottom of the screen the co-ordinates will appear, that is if the game reads the co-ords as the pixels of the map.

The easiest and by far the most fun part of the re-designing of the map and the luk map files and the other numerous files associated with images, the hardest part is editting everything else and finding everything out etc.
