Last night, normal stuff, laptop suddenly dies. Nothing unusual seems to have happened, but it won't turn on. Took battery out, power indicator on it says its fine. Try to run without power, just battery, nothing, run with no battery, nothing.
Is it well and truely screwed?

It won't turn on? No lights, no sounds, no smells, nothing? You are in Australia, so perhaps it's foolish to ask but: how hot/cold is the machine?

It was rather warm at the time, but its been hotter.
Nothing. not a flicker, not a whirr.

Off the top of my head the things I can think of:
(a) The [CPU] fans refuse to come on-line, the system detects it and refuses to enter BIOS.
(b) The power regulation circuitry itself is dead: like a blow fuse.
If the thing is still under warranty, I'd get a replacement ASAP. This kind of stuff should simply not happen while the equipment is still inside its rated lifespan.
