Well guys its finally going to happen, ive decided to waste my time over thext week or two to bring you a wonderful map pack based on historical castles. It only seems to take me a day to create a map, so expect to see 10-15 castles in the first release. Any help with this pack would be much apreciated, also i am hoping these maps might provide a basis for later historical battles. so far i have completed 3 maps in 3 days

Krak des Chevaliers
The City of Acre
Harlech Castle in Wales

any requests for maps are also going to be taken

Hi. This is gonna take some research and effort on your behalf, but the results would be astoundingly nice.

I believe that this place is in France. It is a fortress/monastery I think, and the most amazing part of it is the location.

The community members will hopefully know what I am talking about. The fortress/village/monastery is situated on a large rock off of the coast, and can only be accessible when the tide is low, when it appears as a large rock jutting out of the sand. When the tide is high, the castle appears surrounded by water. Anyway, it is a very picturesque, historical place, and it is viewed by many tourists each year.

What is this, and does it count as a castle? If it does, it would make one pretty looking map.

P.S. Mappers, Island maps would rule http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif NO ESCAPE http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

your talking about Mont St Michael? i think thats right... that would be quite interesting to make, ill look into it, perhaps i can try make it when the tide is out, but there is still some puddles of water here and there.... who knows

btw, castles that have moats... i tihnk i can finally make them... but the need to be a part of a river. My first shot at this will be Caernarfon Castle in Wales... then i tihnk ill give the tower of london a shot

Thanks for your quick response.

It IS Mont St. Michel, and from the pictures of it, it would make the most difficult MTW siege ever. The problem is that the buildings surrounding it are probably not modeled in MTW, and the slopes are so steep, the only way to rush troops in would be going street to street, spiraling up the rock. It would be catastrophic urban warfare, with spectacular carnage. I would love to see this map, even if the odds of winning are as bad as I think they are. Take a look at the pictures and decide for yourself whether to attempt making it or not. If you could, it would be beautiful. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

im definitle going to be looking into mont st michel, thanks for actually reminding me. I finally got the Acre Seige map working, and now its finnished. So far i think it is the most unique map ive made. It is urban warfare at its best, fighting to the main templar fortress right on the end of a peninsula is tough work by all means.

thanks also for the pictures of Harlech Castle, but i managed to grab these before i built it (i find it easier to work of pictures than off my head. So far its as accurate as i can make it, but ive improvised a little with the surrounding area, mind you i still have kept in the plain and castle rock just how they are, as well as the large sea cliffs.

well ive found a plan for the Mont St Michael, so it wont be long till i try my hand at it, as for Masada, ill take a look

Alrowan
12-05-2002, 04:24
well ive taken a look at the Masada pics, and it is possible to make, but the map would be near impossible for someone to win a siege at.. but ill give it a shot anyway

Thanks for deciding to make Mont St. Michel. I have no doubt that it will look excellent. As for Masada, that was a Roman siege, and modern day evidence says that the inhabitants killed themselves before the Romans finished their ramp. However, it is doable.

These Map ideas rock Lemme know what I can do to help http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Le Krak is superb, very cloase to reality. I also find that it is winnable for the attacker. BTW mortars are good for defenders in the Krak once you know where the enemy is deployed. Admittedly it supplements the already powerful defenses but it's totally awesome to see all those arrows and canonfire

Great Work

thanks for the feedback

im currnetly working on what could possibly be one of my toughest maps to date, Caernarfon Castle. Ive finally found out why moats are hard to achieve, thats due to a bridge wantint to span the ENTIRE river, and it ges right through ones castle, so what im doing instead is making a landbridges.

As for my first release, ill include 10 maps

Seljuk Sinan if you want you can try your hand at masala, it looks relativly easy. Expect the first pack out in a week from now

Okie Alrowan I'll start up on Masada.

Could you please send me some links, pics, diagrams, that you have on this fortress (if you have any), especially helpful would be a floor plan. Anyways I'm off to do some research on it now.

Cheers http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hmm http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

the only thing about Masada is that it needs an approach route. the fortress has to be very high so that evrything below looks distant. This causes game problems though since when you have something that high the soldiers marching up look very unrealistic ROFL any suggestions on this ?

Alrowan
12-07-2002, 05:20
ok, well heres the latest on how things are going.

Release date should be arround the 13th or 14th this month, depending on how many bugs i encounter.

As it stands i need 6 more maps, these are the completed ones:

Krak des Chevaliers
Harlech Castle
City of Acre

and

MONT ST MICHAEL

guys i have finally made this great little castle, ive had to make a few changes so it would be playable.
1. I have made most of the surrounding area sea
2. I have left a single causeway to the fortress
3. I have added a keep where the great cathedral should be (lack of models)
4. I have tried my best to make the approach as difficult as possible, with a wall allong the acsending path, it seems that some computer players get stuck here and there, especially in attacking, but overall it is a tough map, and i lost when attacking 40k florins to 15k, so its well balaced

Other maps that are underconstruction include

Caernarfon Castle
Masada

Seljuk, with masada, make it about as high as my map of harlech castle, for the map, make the siege ramp run up the side, make it farily steep, but not no too steep. This fort was renown for its location, if you have any troubles, you know my email, so send me it, and ill see what i can do.

Thank you for making the map of Mont St. Michel, I bet it will look awesome.

One question: is there a road spiraling up the rock?

Alrowan
12-07-2002, 11:27
no spiral up the rock, but there is no spiral up the rock in real life anyway. One side of the fortress drops off from the cathedral in a cliff, the pathways winds up one side, ive tried to keep it as close i can whilst maintaining scale, quite tough as the fortress isnt that large, just high

I like the sound of this http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I'v been to Mt St Michel.
It's a very impresive place.
It was not possible to assult
in any force realy.
So don't make it too realistic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I think it's the castle in the movie
The Count of Monti Cristo.

yeah, ive had to make the street winding up the hill wider and not so steep, also its a little closer to the land, so seige weapons can work from more angles

Alrowan
12-10-2002, 10:53
ahh.. tis finally done, i have managed to get Caernarfon working after some major inital setbacks. What ive found is that if you stick a river into a castle map, then the attackers deploment zone is only on onse side of the river, so ive had to work arround that and a few other problems but now it is done... only a few more maps till i get off my arse and release this thing

Kraellin

alrowan,

if i were to ask you to make some castle maps and maybe some non-castle maps for a specific mod i'm making, would you be interested? it's going to be a while before i'm ready for such, but just thought i'd see if that would appeal at all.

there shouldnt be any problems there, ive kind of caught on with all the little secrets of castle making now, and there isnt much that i cant do, apart from rivers (they divide the map in two, making deployment crash). expect some more of my work out this friday

sorry for the fact that there is less maps that i would have liked, mainly due to the fact that ive been quite busy of late with xmas just arround the corner, and i really wanted to get some of these maps out in the open due to a lot of requests, so here they be.

The Maps include

Krak Des Chevaliers (an updated version from the one already up on the site)

Harlech Castle (a good 'ol Welsh castle built By King Edward II, quite fun to play)

The City of Acre (a map of the city of acre, a coastal seige that eats up ones system)

Mont St Michael (that french castle on and island on a tidal flat with a cathedral, slightly changed for playablilities sake)

Caernarfon Castle (another Welsh castle with a moat, a town and a river... kinda... as best i could withought it crashing)

anyway folks, hope you enjoy it

I saw this topic being of maps, so instead of creating a new one, why not hijack this one that accomplished its purpose already?

i love challenges, and the one i just set for myself today was making the biggest, baddest, best-looking fortress ever... altough its still not incredibly good looking, its almost impossible to assault this baby, with or without siege weapons.
i will post it tomorrow, but i will explain it so i know if someone made a better one so far.

-It has 5 layers of protection (keep, inner artillery layer, mid-artillery layer, outer catapult/arrows layer, outmost gun/artillery layer and Gate fotress
-It rests on a big hill so every tower has a longer range and can have a clear line of fire
-it would have water all around it, but it would make it impenetrable.

I didnt "cheat" by adding many towers in the same place. In my tests, seven Ai's on expert with 99999 florins against me with 10000 and they got their asses kicked big time, as i "only" lost 80% of my men but i had 2 layers remaining.
I didnt handicap the AI, they had 12 artillery pieces, ranging from ballistas to siege cannons, most of them gumpowder. All of them had a clear line of fire and were used.

took me a day, but IMO its well worth it, you better have a good computer for it, as without any trees it already has 4500 polygons, plus the HUMONGOUS army you will need to take it plus the almost limitless artillery fire from both sides, etc...

if it wanst 3AM here i would fire up a game and show you guys a screenie. its coming tomorrow

12-25-2002, 14:15
that is one heck of a fortress

ive found my Krak des Chevaliers map hard enough to assault as it is... for this one you would need 7 attackers, one defender and 99999 florins to 2000..

Lion King
12-26-2002, 03:48
if its not raining or it isnt on expert, 50 florins will do against those 99999, tested it today on hard lol.
it will be used as one of the super-LOTR style fortresses for my mod ,i think. Dont worry though, in the campaign map you will have reinforcements, so you can effectively throw 75000 men in the battle to finally crush the enemy's capital province
