HI,

currently I'm trying to make a mod without the pope in it and give the land to the italians. I'm not looking for a way to remove excommunication but just to remove the pope at all.
What happens now is that I gave Rome to the Italians and also removed the Pope from "SetActiveFaction". But after 1 turn in the game the Pope emerges in Rome with a massive force.
I thought there where some posts about this issue but I cannot find them. Can someone help?

Thanks,
Panthapower

Try removing all mention of the papacy from the startpos file. If that doesn't work, then it's not ment to work.

I have actually tested by removing any mention whatsoever of the papacy from the startpos files, and this just means that on turn 2, when the pope decides to rebel, the game crashes...it seems that there is NO way of turning the pope off

Yes he is out of this world so to speak.
I'm sure he could adapt another role http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Thanks for the answers guys. Too bad that it seems that the pope is hard-codec... And you're right Whitey, removing all Pope attributes from early locks up the game after turn one (when the pope is supposed to reemerge). If I recall correctly it was the line "SetCulture::" that locks the game up.

And Tuff, putting him in Malta wouldn't be a good solution for most mods where you might only use 4 factions. Of course I can put him under the name as for instance France but then I want to make sure that he responds as a normal player. But what I'm afraid of in such a mod is that the pope is more difficult to wipe out then other factions. He reappears more often and stronger then other faction. So it would be the best to remove him at all if at all possible.

Anyone other suggestions to remove the pope?

SetBehaviour:: FN_PAPIST POPE

Change this, then the Papacy will no longer have it's abilities i.e. The power to excommunicate.

You can then attack Catholics all you want ithout Papal warning or approval.

Yes, I know, but if you crush this new "pope"-faction it reappears much quicker then a normal faction (like in a normal game when you try to conquer the papal states only to find out he comes back with major stacks of units a few turns later). So if I make a mod with only a few factions e.g. France, England, Scotland. Ireland, Wales and rename the pope to Wales, they will reappear much stronger then any other faction. This brings a mod out of balance I think.

Well, disable him and place him on an island, change the factions info and make someone like Malta, or maybe Scotland seen as they are a rebellious folk.

well in my map of england we dont need a pope, but what im looking at doing is recreating the pope as an archbishop or something, or maybe just sticking him on the tiny island of the isle of man

if u do make him an arch bishop make him less powerful since no1 listens to him anyway. He tried to ban comp games.
i hope he burns in catholic hell. u may have noticed i dont have any religion so i sit back and mock other religions.

Hmmm, not the nicest solution but yes, it might be a way. Seems that the pope is the only faction with hard-codec information.

Maybe not the nicest dude, but one of the only ways.

[B]I ran into the same dilema with the Patrician mod the patricians being the papal faction. I fixed that problem by Taking over Rome with My Romans and Puting a huge army on it and everytime the Patricians rear their ugly toga heads at me I quickly subdue them with my legions. Thus My Praetor has control of Rome and the whole of italy eventualy. Rome serves me well since early in the campaign they have that Castle13 and Ability to train My Roman Republic Legionari. Milan also serves me well early in the game.[B]
