View Full Version : Science Sub-forum: Separate But Equal?
Hi gang, Hosawaka Tito and I have been talking off and on about closing the Science sub-forum, reasons being:
Siphons interesting posts away from the Frontroom
Not much traffic
People ain't reading it
Too much fragmentation makes people forget about the Hunk Thread
What do you think?
Music sub-forum?

I guess great Texas minds think alike then?
Did we really just make the exact same post post at the exact same time? Have we truly become one? :laugh4:

I agree with the increasingly merged consciousness of Strike for the Fat VI.
It should be merged; it's little used, less read, and splinters threads, leaving them to wither.

I reckon "the seriousness the science topics offer/Science sub-forum hits" ratio does not meet the requirements for Science to have its own sub-forum, at least yet.

I propose replacing it with a God forum, which will be symbolic of the rise of fundamentalism and the triumph of faith over reason.
Or maybe just merge the science thread.

Good idea. We can discuss all sorts of theology and Christian-influenced science.

Excellent! Two votes already!
To reflect the scientific tradition inherited by the new God forum, I propose we name it the Ken Ham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Ham) forum, combining the twin elements of matters of faith, and scientifically proven young earth creationism.
I say merge them. Between the Frontroom and Backroom there's plenty of space for discussion of science, serious or otherwise.

It was an interesting proposition by Caius at the time, but interest has waned.

Merge. The science forum always seems dead. On the topic of other frontroom branches, how about something along the lines of a beginners philosophy branch? Could cover some of the previous topics mentioned in this thread.

Don't do this, you'll just have people ignoring it for the Backroom (sorry Nerd), in the same principle, merge.

Philosophy not politics. On every topic but the rigidity of modern living. A blessing of mental illness for those unfortunate enough not to notice it!
As the dominate poster in the Science Section, it could probably be expanded to cover more areas. Or just merge with back/front rooms.

tbh, I think one of the reasons for the continued success of the .org is the fact that the Tavern has such a close-knit arrangement.
I don't think those forums that make different categories for everything ever fare well. Here, you discuss anything in the Frontroom, except for the more controversial Backroom stuff. IMO this arrangment is perfect, the Frontroom/Backroom divide is definitely needed, but otherwise, the fact that everyone discussing all sorts of topics can meet together in the one sub-forum is what makes this place such a strong online community.
Agreed.
In my opinion the most interesting science threads are those in which the topic meanders and explores multiple aspects of the specific research in question, not to mention those in which there are contributions from members who are not naturally predisposed to see all scientific progress as a good thing; both of which I feel posting a topic in the science forum tends to discourage.
I say merge it. I almost never remember to even check it, despite my often finding science topics to be quite interesting.

The people have spoken. And, um, the people! United! Can never be ignited! No, wait, how does it go ...?
Anyway, Tosa has notified us that he will be merging the Science sub-forum with the Frontroom:
We could use a sci prefix for the topics and then move them over, I'll do after having dinner.
So coolio. Thanks to everyone who voted and discussed. In a very real sense, this forum belongs to the members, so having your help with this sort of decision is much appreciated.

Does this democratic revolution heralded by the mods signal an end to Tosa's benevolent despotism? Will it result in a mod-led oligarchy? Or will the ordinary orgah have a meaningful say in things? Or must we scrap all admin/mod powers and all forms of user titles?
Hello,
All threads from the Science forum have the prefix Sci and it's thus possible to easily locate all Science threads in this forum by using the sorting tool. I'ld recommend to prefix new threads as such too.
The Science forum is closed for new threads and the redirects to here will stay for some time.
It's possible to add some other prefixes to sort topics here.
@Rhyfelwyr: Tosa is the best sort of despot, in that he does not have the time, energy or inclination to act like a despot.
"Ordinary" orgahs should always have a meaningful say. The membership is the Org.
