Is there any mod that doesn't majorly (or most prefered at all) modify the game, but only unlocks the unplayable factions? Macedon, Armenia, Spain etc etc...
I apologize for the unhelpful post, but I do know there is a file somewhere in the RTW folder, a text file of some start_pos or something like that. It is very easy to change (it just being a text file and all) and you can unlock all the factions but rebel. Even I can do it! Hopefully someone more informed will post here soon to help you out! You could also check out the modding forum, it might be there!

You edit the descr_strat.txt directory. Place all factions except rebels and the SPQR in the unlocked faction section, cut and paste works here. That will leave only the Senate and rebels as unplayable. Make a backup of the original file before editing, as always............

Thanks a lot mate!

too bad, I came too late.
you are supposed to "cut and paste" the text in the Descr_strat.txt
not replaced it with your text. I got a bit pressed when I tried to campaign. each time I campaign, Rome.exe crashes

go to descr_strat file. cut the factions you want to play and paste in the playables

Hey, i played the non-playable factions before using mods, but it was on a friend's laptop. I have Windows 7 on mine, and for some reason it won't save.
I used the descr_strat file mod. Can anyone help?
Perhaps it has a read only attribute on the file?
Edit: spelling ~:(

Tosa is right. In Vista, at least, it will not let me save directly to anything in the program folders. You could try saving the modified file to the desktop and moving it in to replace the vanilla file.
Did right click/properties not work Motep?

I got it-it was on read only, but now I can play other non-playable factions-including S.P.Q.R!

:shame:
Alas, I lazily mod from a side of the computer that lacks administrative power
