I would say so. But why would an Ogre be used in a middle ages battle?

As a very basic rule of thumb -

Any new unit images (Ogre, Elephant ... or whatever) must have some minimum actions defined for them -
- Stand/Walk/Run/Fight/Die (charge and run can be the same) for infantry
- Stand/Walk/Run/Die (again charge and run can be the same) for mounts

This gives us 20 images (minimum) per infantry type unit and 16 for a mount. On a hi res BIF (512x512) this means -

1) For infantry type figures (Ogres) this gives an average 'space' of a square roughly 110x110 (height/width) per image. Now think in terms of a ratio 3:2 (height/width) which gives us a new maximum size of roughly 135x90. Considering the average size of an infantry figure is (very roughly) 90x60 this gives a 50% increase. So Any Infantry trpe image can only be 50% greater than the current Images (at max - presuming basic actions only).

2) For mount type figures (Elephants) this gives an average 'space' of a square roughly 125x125 (height/width) per image. This time the ratio is more like 2:3 (height/width) for most images, and considering we have only to provide for 16 images (as opposed to 20 for infantry) this gives us a new maximum size of roughly 150x100. It's impossible to really work out an average mount size so considering there is only around 25% free space in any of the 5 mount BIFs tyhis only allows for an increas in size of around 10% (for BOTH height and width).

So it would appear that Ogres are a yes-yes, and elephants a no-no.

This is all presuming we have no shields/weapons in the same BIF - for Ogres/Elephants presumably that
would be the case

Just a few thoughts on elephants and other larger beasts on possible ways to include them in a mod.

1) Have the beastie use the same animation for walk and run - this could free up some bif space to fit in a larger mount.

2) if you're making a complete mod decrease the scale size of the units until the elephant fits into a 512x512 bif and then rescale the other figures to suit. Of course this means that you'd either have to put up with increased spacing between the units (real open order http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ) or see if you can find the variables that dictate the spacing between units in formations http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif . Either way you'd have to see if you can modify the scale of buildings, castles etc to match the new unit sizes.

Just a few thoughts, untried as yet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I like the 'great minds' description but unfortunately I rarely get the chance to choose how others see me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Welly, its a go-go for both IMO, you just need to Scale them larger in-battle, although it will look a bit pixelated, it works fine.
I made trolls for mythical, and they are MASSIVE, 15 foot tall beasts that throw rocks at enemies, they only look pixelated if you look at them from very close.
and grumpy, no need to worry either, you only need to rescale the elephants, not all units, but if you want to do it the hard way, you can also change the spacing between units very easily the same way.
