Historical note:
Before Rome: Total War multiplayer was integrated with Steam, we had to use a virtual network software called Hamachi to play against one another. A special thank you to our long time EB Online veteran and patron Brave Sir Robin for this network. The old text is kept below for posterity.
Download and install Hamachi (http://www.filehippo.com/download_hamachi/). Join the EBO network using the following ID and password:
Network ID: 100-792-846
Password: eb
Install the latest version of the EB Online MP EDU found on our website. Run EB in multiplayer mode and play with others in the LAN lobby. Please leave the network when you are finished with your gaming session.
Special thanks to Brave Sir Robin for maintaining our EBO network.

Can we have a forum for EB2 Multi?
Can we have a forum for EB2 Multi?
If you mean EB Online, we don't need forums. We just use the EB forum to create monthly threads (1 each month). If you mean EBII, it's not out yet. Rest assured, the Wiki and EB Online are definitely prepared and have plenty of space to fit EBII players! (certainly you'll see a shift in player-base but many people would stick with EBI as they may not own M2TW).
UPDATE: All text mentioning the Alexander engine for Rome: Total War has been removed from the website. If anybody spots remnants let me know so I can remove them. I have backups and am simply presenting an Alex-free instructions set because the community simply cannot cope with replay archives that will have a sub-set of Alex-only replays...such is simply a wrong thing to allow because what does that imply for those who do not own Alex? They cannot equally and justly review past games? Not fair. Not fair at all. RTW 1.5 will be used solely and exclusively (from another standpoint, EB is a modification for RTW, not ALX, as are some other mods). Also, remember that you should have a clean EB install, not one that has sub-mods or sub-mod packs such as the EB Mini-Mod Pack (exceptions to this being, for instance, the EB MP Load Replay Mod that you obviously need if you're going to replay battles; you should not replay battles using the single player EDU).
IMPORTANT UPDATE: EB Online Network #1 is for practice/non-tourney matches. EB Online Network #2 is for tournament-only matches. You can read the same statement now on the website under Instructions page.
Would like to supply some proposals:
Do not play Flatland! Play Irish Marshlands instead - no less flat, but a lot nicer.
My lame game proposals:
Hunting - a certain unit needs to be retreated from battlefield 5 minutes after beginning of the battle, other side must try to destroy it. If it routs and does not stop halfway, the defender must accept defeat. Suggestions: Must be an unique (maybe elite) unit, not cavalry, no phalanxboxing it or boxing it at all. The attacker may also lose after some battle time (since time is undefined in such battles, could be guessed by quantity and tirediness of unts) Maybe an AI would do good as being a separate player and having that unit on defender side - but then you can`t try exotic solutions like hiding.
Siege - self-explanatory. Suggestions: No phalanx, no cavalry. meh
Teamwork - one player in a team can control infantry, the other cavalry, and other could control artillery. Some in-depth teamwork could be possible, like heavy and light infantry. It is when battles become more realistic. Suggestions: Artillery is so damn expensive :(.
Nomad assault - Nomads invade your camp, can you spare your supplies? If you can make sure that they do not get a Heroic Victory after this, or even turn the tables, you will win! Suggestions - no phalanx (I have already saw how is it like when a phalanx suddendly turns...),, defending side has no cavalry, no boxing and. as the nomads, not peppering the enemy with the arrows until they are gone and only then charge.
Uprising - Defending side must get to the other side of map without suffering more than 50% casualties. Attacker will only have access to militia units, which must be hidden through the battle map (preferably a forest) and pick the right moment to get them out. Suggestions: no spam, defender, must not look on the radar (meh)
If people could play fair, how well this could turn is inmeasurable.
Humans are not fair. Your proposals, on the other hand, are.
P.S. Play on EB maps, would ya guys? I really don't get the whole Grassy Flatlands thing anymore. Five years. Still? Sheesh.

A good example of how to defeat a spear box strategy (not a phalanx box) with a steppe army, and a good example of how to defend against steppe armies and maintain formation cohesion as well.

i would play KH in the tourney if could find 2 more KH players , so that we can form up one huge battle line , so epic that the other team will run at the sight of it ... also u can organise troops better .. one can bring a whole lot more line inf .. or skirmishers .. and i can just bring the elite troops .. so i do less work overall , but get to claim the victory when everyone else has routed .. muahahahahah jks .. but yes ... epic 4v4 KH 20km hoplite line ftw!1
oh yeah and grassy flatland???
the dec tournament that did not go through .. was going to have specific maps for each faction .. like home and away games .. and each home side gets a map suited to their area ? .. well this was the point of having teams for each faction ( and limiting them to ensure the ranks fill ) .. but anywayyy .. the marshlands and a few others are quite nice ..
The only limitation for maps, even though unwritten, is this: USE EB MAPS.
EDIT: This isn't official, it's ideal. Don't take this as a requirement in tournaments; even replays don't say which maps the battle was played on.

Could someone link to a post with the full tourney rules? Army composition, etc? I recently played a match with gamegeek where I mistakenly kept firing missiles in melee (gund-i-palta on defensive), and he clued me into the fact that such a thing was not acceptable. If I take part in a future tourney, I'd like to play fair:embarassed:.

Except maybe having to announce using chariots or elephants beforehand. That seems like a sissy rule :).

One problem with Sauromatae: they only have spearmen and archers for factional infantry. I suggest these additions:
Bosporan Archers
All Baltic Units
Bastarnae Infantry
MisterFred
06-11-2010, 22:59
I certainly agree with the Baltic units. Bastarnae seem like merc-types to me... but the Sarmatians really do need some other factional infantry.
And I'll say it again, having to announce elephants is an EXTREME penalty to an already rarely-used unit that costs about a third of your total mnai. Most armies don't have extra gund-i-palta sitting around... but they will when elephants are announced, and suddenly 3k mnai trounces your 13k investment.
Burebista
06-11-2010, 23:27
I think the Getai need a few more units too. I mean , you cant recruit any scythian units even as mercs when on the EB campaign map you can recruit them in a homeland province?
Also Sweboz should get celtic slingers as factionals. They really cant defend against steppe people without them thus making them useless in the tournament.Maybe add some baltic archers as a bonus?:P
I would really love to see a larger spread of factions and these measures combined maybe with some "trees" maps and lowering the mnai might make them feasible in the tournament instead of the Cata wars we have now.
Tree maps are chosen by you when you host the game. How does one please everyone at once? Hmm. So Getai Sweboz and Sauro need more units? So far our factional lists are based on those from the EB site. The same concept is used at the wiki because those are actually more than factional (e.g. hoplites for Sauro). Others end up being recruitable because you've conquered such and such a region. As for mnai we're discussing a Low-Money mode in the rule-altering thread (for 2010, of course). I thought munky had the announce chariots/ele to represent scouting and whatnot.
EB Online now has a 'Call Me' feature on the home page where you put in your number, Google connects you to our voicemail for free, and you may leave us a voice message, no matter it be a complaint, suggestion, question, or praise. Thank you.

Can i just go offline or do have to leave the network so i am not hogging space?
Either, but preferably you would leave the network before turning off your computer so that I don't have to do much work other than keep track of scores and replay files. If everyone left the network when done gaming, it would cut down on extra silly work, like manually removing offline people from the Hamachi website.
UPDATE
Pictone Neitos (Pictone "Painted" Swordsmen) has been removed from the Casse factional unit list and is now located within the Aedui/Arverni list. Reason? It isn't even possible to recruit the unit for Casse online, only in Aedui and Arverni.

Many are new to Hamachi. Basically, all you need to do is run Hamachi, join the appropriate network(s), arrange a match with someone via Hamachi chat, run EB, enter Multiplayer >> LAN Battles in the main menu, and you'll see your opponent in the lobby.
Excellent. If anybody wants to play, e-mail me at: danielshanemcglone@gmail.com

My Hamachi is now screwing me over for some reason. I don't know why, but from time to time I get disconnected (sometimes I can't even connect from get go). I've (of course) tried with my firewall off and I've tried reinstalling Hamachi. The problem still persists, though. This didn't happen before, and I haven't made any changes. This shouldn't be a problem soon.
How can I open the game in multiplayer mode? I didn't find configuration. It is not in my Start > All Programs > Europa Barbarorum > Configuration. I reinstall everything but it does not exist. My RTW is in the C:\Program Files (x86)\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\ directory.
That's weird, isn't in the start-up any "Play Multi Player" entry?
At least you gotta have its launcher in the main folder...
No, there is not neither "Play Multi Player" entry or launcher.
I want to play EB multiplayer battles with my friends. We insalled EB 1.1, 1.2 patch and 1.2 fixes, then EBO MP EDU 3.4. In the lobby it says versions are incompatible:
http://i.imagebanana.com/img/sodbfes9/incompatibleversion.jpg
What is the problem? Which code is right?
Merhaba Canomer. I think what is happening is that you are incompatible because although you've installed the MP EDU, your EB data folder is still using the SP EDU. This is why we use the Trivial Script (listed in Start Menu as Configuration). It allows us to switch to the MP EDU. If both you and your friend do this and are still unable to play, then it must be files external to the EDU that are causing this mismatch. In which case it may be hard to tell whose installation is faulty =/ and I certainly don't want to suggest that y'all should do a clean install...
Keep me posted. I'd like to help.

Check your Rome total war folder. There should be an EB Icon called configuration in there. Use that to run MP.
This is the Rome Total War folder:
http://i.imagebanana.com/img/svcyp7lw/RTWFolder.png
In Extras folder there is EBTrivialScript_setup.exe, I installed it but doesn't work. When I run the C:\Program Files (x86)\EBTrivialScript\EBTrivialScript.exe this appears:
http://i.imagebanana.com/img/hqy89v8n/Row.png
There is ebconfig.dat, how I run it correctly? Which program should I use to open it?
One thing you can try and do is try to reinstall EB over the current installation. I recommend installing trivial script during this initial installation. I know the Extras folder is there in case you didn't do so and change your mind later. But perhaps something is not linking correctly and is causing the EBTS not to 'connect' to EB, as it were.

I did this before. Nothing changed. If you insist, I can do it once more. Yesterday I insalled Windows 8 (64bit). What is the manual way to switch MP mode?

I'm not sure about your current situation because you have EB installed over Alexander. All of us in the online community installed on Vanilla R:TW. I think the Alexander mod wasn't really an official EB released, just tweaked by a fan to fit the Alex.exe and therefore may have a bunch of changes I'm unfamiliar with.
I don't use Alexander exe or Barbarian exe. RTW is 1.5.
You have been struck by the Windows 8 Anti-RTW virus. It aims people who wish to play RTW on Windows 8 and tells the software: DO NOT ALLOW MODS TO WORK IN MULTIPLAYER MODE. We're working on solving this now.
Okay, I'm just kidding. But can you please tell me exactly how your EB and RTW are set up? And I mean everything.
For example, here's how mine is set up:
I installed RTW 1.5. Then EB 1.1. EB 1.2. Then EB 1.2 fixes. EB MP Load Replay Mod. Then EBO MP EDU 3.4. I ran Trivial Script, saved and exited in Multiplayer mode to switch the EDU to MP. Now I can run EB and play with people on Hamachi.
I am reinstalling everything now, EB 1.1 says; "It is not recommended to install EB in Program Files folder. Do you really want to proceed?"
Edit:
It is done. It seems old Kaspersky see EB1.1 as virus and doesn't allow EB Configuration EB, Multi Player, EB Preferences ve EB Single Player shortcuts. But after I changed my antivirus they become avaliable after installation.
Thanks for help!
Have updated the website and moved to a faster server and a new domain. Updated OP to reflect changes.

Do you mean where do they go after you save one or are you asking for a bank of replay files from previous years? Depending on how you installed EB I may or may not be able to help you with the first question.
I saved several replays but I couldn't find them in ...\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\EB folder. There is not replay folder in EB\. But I can watch replays in game.
Edit:
I found them in C:\Users\Homeros\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\EB\replays

Ah good I was just about to tell you the same thing. If you install in Program Files the replays get sent to a funky place but a search of the file name will reveal the path. All your saved replays will go here though I recommend creating a replays folder in your EB folder and moving them there if you wish to use/upload them. They will appear in game if you do so.

@AGA: Our patron for the previous and current year is Brave(x2) Sir Robin, the champ himself. Many thanks to him. As for new networks, LogMeIn has unfortunately made free networks support only 4 computers. This includes the host of the network, so you can imagine it only working between close friends looking for a temporary solution to making a LAN game work over the Net. You may want to try Evolve. It's a similar concept but the model supports virtually any number of participants you throw at it. We haven't had much success with RTW & mods on Evolve (at least in games containing over 2 people), but the devs have been working on it, so it may be different now. Try it if you'd like.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. Evolve is a VLAN platform, just like Hamachi. It is a an intermediary software which allows people to connect over the net. This has nothing to do with Gamespy, Steam, or any "launcher" (never heard of one re:EB). I have successfully used both VLANs concurrently, though I can see why there may be issues with some games. Honestly, I would just go with trial and error to see what works.
I seem to be confused. Please help. I do not have trivial script on my vanilla eb (it is a copy - either I didn't install it or it broke when it was copied).
I have a separate installation with megamod and the trivial script works on that, but it is for alex. Can I use that for online play? If so do I use the alex disc or the rtw? I thought I read somewhere that you must use rtw.exe and eb1.2 with no mods at all to play ebonline.

The trivial script isn't installed in the RTW folder - it's installed in a separate folder, so it's as it should be. Don't worry about that; you can still use it for both installations. Just right-click on the shortcut to start MP and choose preferences. There you should find a field that says "start in" which will point to your original, SP installation. Change that to the direction of your MP installation, and that's it. Just make sure to use the rtw.exe and you're good to go. ~:)

Is this still active? If so I'm interested. Getting hamachi now.
Just to let everyone know, I have not been active in my own EB Online scene for a while now, especially since the last major tournament. Although I'm busy with my studies, I will try and be available as much as possible, especially if you would like to setup your EB multiplayer game for the first time.
Unless there is a major turnaround in the demand for EB multiplayer, I do not anticipate any further tournaments, particularly if there will be a release candidate for EB2. I will be both in the Hamachi network as well as the Evolve group chat lobby. If you haven't checked that out yet, please do so. Thank you.

Well, vartan my gangster, your EB Online website is down. I cannot find the ruleset anymore. I am from Stainless Steel Multiplayer HQ steamcommunity dot com/groups/SSMHQ that I've built mostly on my own and some help with DochtorGajo. We've used historical books and documents and playtesting to find a good medium between horse archer dominance into something that still maintains some balance with unit limitations. I created a modified multiplayer EDU and later descr_factions file so that Stainless Steel is catered to multiplayer instead of single player. It's been 4 years since I started that project and though I haven't been there for the past 2 years, it has grown by itself from just 20 players to 32, which isn't much, but a lot for a niche community, far surpassing the other groups. At request and same desire, I tried EB multiplayer with him. I researched the multiplayer side and found out that you had already started an EB community with a multiplayer EDU before I even started multiplayer SS. We've both come to the same conclusion in fixing multiplayer, though you started first. Anyways, back to the matter at hand, I'd like to find the ruleset again, since I've only played one match in EB and would like to play on this laptop.
Also, how would you get around to limiting factions by period, such as Imperial Legions (period) and Post-Marian Reforms (period) without having to make sure your opponent follows the time period? In my EDU, I was able to limit units by time period as well as putting unit limits depending on period as well (like 2 in high, 4 in late for the same unit). The reason I ask is that I've yet to setup a proper ladder for SS and seeing as how without a proper ladder like you had, we end up with a lot of cheaters who choose units outside period to gain advantage. If it's possible, I would like to be able to set unit limits or maybe join your ladder.
Dear NovaTitan,
I remember the SS multiplayer startup. I believe it took our legacy ruleset and overall MP platform design as a template. I am very happy to hear that it's still going strong. That our MP communities are niche communities need not be perceived as a bad thing though. Numbers are no matter for me as long as the people involved are having fun.
The website is indeed down and since I'm very busy with my PhD courses, I didn't realize it until today. Basically, our server upgraded our PHP version for security reasons, and it had an adverse effect as you can see. I'll be working on it as often as I can these few days to resolve this and (hopefully) not lose any of our former data.
Regarding your question on Roman period-based armies, we use an honor system. If you start a MP game and you notice your opponent has a hybrid Roman army (i.e., units from different periods), just leave the game and remake. At least, if it's a tournament game. Our rules are (of course) oriented toward our tournaments. What people do in their friendlies is up to their imagination.
The ladder we use is just an open source ladder used for another game. It's perpetual and is not meant to capture any individual tournament. I keep a spreadsheet for each monthly tournament and just post the results at the end. Players gain one point per win, and lose one point per loss. Highest net score determines winner. We subtract for losses because if we only counted wins, players who played more often would accumulate more points.
Best wishes,
Vartan
P.S. I'll try and remember to edit this post when I (hopefully) resolve the site's current problem.
UPDATE: As of 20.FEB.2014 02:42 EST the site (http://www.ebmultiplayer.com) is fully functional. Please notify me if the site reverts to a non-functional state. Thank you.
^If you guys need help with testing or anything I am free these days most times, I can install hamachi again and EB should be working.

I'm going to be on Hamachi tomorrow (Sunday 23 Feb 2014) at 11:00 am EST (utc/gmt -5). If you can make it, I'd appreciate it. I don't have a full connection to Hamachi due to my uni connection and I'd like it if someone could make sure Aga can connect to the LAN lobby.

I might log on again to play some EB.
I have been mostly playing Shogun 2 online but I hate the current meta game of it which is to bring a butt load of cavalry, some attendants guarding matchlock groups then a minuscule infantry group and dance around the map with your hot keys all loaded up. Whenever your opponent attacks you shoot and run then pressure another direction; How boring can it get, you'd think melee blobs are of no skill but I miss actually engaging in melee. Even Rome 2 is better in this aspect.
I played vs vartan a while ago, I believe (iirc) he would bring an arverni/ aedui melee rush every time.
I do hate some rules on unit exploiting as half the time I'm too busy making sure I'm not running units through each other or having phalanx formation on when attacked from a flank. It makes bringing phalanxes too much of a pain, I'd rather load up a bunch of melee infantry, couple of meat shields and a nice cavalry contingent as it's easier to micro due to not having to worry about managing missiles or phalanx exploits.
EB online is still fun though, when I log on and get a match I'll probably record it and post it on youtube.
hey Vartan where was that thread where we posted replays? I have some

Hi there. The rules aren't set in stone. They're open to change, as they always have been. I don't know if people want a tournament yet (if there's enough interest, we can start one again in a couple of months). We can confer with everyone and get ideas about how we can improve the rules to maintain a balance between fun and fairness. Whatever works for people =]
i would like to know how much activity should i expect on EB multiplayer. I am undecided wether to go through the whole process of insalling eb for steam again in order to be able to play online. I tend not to it because i fear the servers are empty.

There are people available in which you can chat for a game.
There's always a few online though sometimes there'll be none or people are idle depending on the time you log on. Most of the players are European so if you're from the Americas or Oceania there could be some problems. (I'm in US yet can still hook up games, just don't expect to find players to play every time you're on like if you were to hit matchmaking in Starcraft2)
I have rome gold on steam. I tried to connect with other people on lan but I was shown allways to be incompatible. I tried the -Installing-EB-with-steam solution but i found some difficulty in following it stept by step. First of all there was no shortcut created on my desktop for EB. Second, i did not understand the meaning of this phrase "First, use EB installed with regular rtw exe, secondly.....". As a side note, i can't lounch eb from configuration as it says that it can't find steam. When i try to connect to another player it says i am using a different mod and : Host mod (eb) and a number Your mod (EB) and a differnet number (i would have posted a link with the photo but i'm not allowed as i don't have enough posts. . I would really apreciate your help.

Basically, install Rome TW: Gold as you normally would through Steam. Install EB 1.1 and 1.2 in your RTW:G installation folder (basically you point to it during the EB installation; it's usually something like c/...../steam/steamapps/common/rometotalwargold). Once you've done this, you'll want to install the EB 1.2 Fixes, the multiplayer edu (mp stats balancing), and the ability to load multiplayer replays (if you so wish to review any); these three are all found here (http://www.ebmultiplayer.com/getting-started/). You'll want to make sure you follow instructions (they usually indicate for you to point to the RTW:G folder, again, if I remember correctly).
Since you're using Steam, it can be annoying to create a shortcut and add options, etc. Or to edit the Steam launcher. To make life easier you can just use a mod that modifies the EB (Trivial Script) launcher. It's called ExTSO (extended trivial script options) and it's made by Jirisys from these forums. You just check the boxes you want (incl. 'steam install') and you're good to go!

Enjoy your games!

Hello. I never played multi (out of a few S2TW games) but I have an EB installation that I run with the steam version of Alex.exe, ExTSO and jirisy's Mega Mod on top of it. Do I have to uninstall the mega mod in order to play multi ?
ExTSO works by copying the files from their respective folders (e.g. EB\ebo game edu backup\alex) into the EB Data folder (i.e. EB\Data). If you wanted to play EBO, you'd have to copy all the files the mod pack replaces into the ebo game edu backup\rtw (or the engine of your preference), which is quite the hassle, and having the Trivial Script copy all those files can be an extremely slow process.
I recommend you keep a separate clean install of EB+ExTSO for EBO, if you still want to use the Mod Pack. Otherwise, a simple clean reinstall of EB would suffice (past me didn't really think too hard on user convenience it seems).

Ok. I think I have made backups for each step of the installation (an old habit me got after getting crazy trying to install EB years ago). So I must have a clean install of EB + ExTSO somewhere.
So next step I paste it in the RTW gold folder, if I understand correctly.

I just run 2 installs of EB, one for SP and one for MP.

Yes. Don't forget to install the 1.2 fixes too, since it's a requirement for MP. Although there's no mess if you install it on top of an EB+ExTSO installation.

Nah just that GameSpy and hamachi don't go well with each other, since GS is going down soon I'll install Hamachi again.
When I get back I'll probably record some first person pov game play of EB online.
I'll probably try to get swedishlandsknetch to make a video on EB and get it covered so we can have more potential players.

Sorry for the late reply but my guess is as good as you. Don't even get me started. I've had so many problems since Microsoft moved to Win8 that I can't even begin to tell you. Everything was just fine for simple folk like me in Win7 that the shift was too compatibility breaking for me. Meh...

Ive suddenly become available to play MP EB. PM me if and when you available
Looking forward to seeing you on the field.
Guys if players have the same version of a game, what else could be causing the "different mod" error in MP?
Im not sure if thats the error betwenen steam and retail Rome owners now. Who did you test with?
It was with M2TW, both using disc versions...
maybe one playing MedII and the other one of the kigdoms expansion or you guys playing diff kingdoms. Also what mod are you playing ? its possible that one of you have only one kingdoms campaign installed becasue for kingdoms mods its needed only the exe so its not necessay to install all the campaigns.
Think about it, and give the game the benefit of the doubt. If both of you had identical file structures, you'd get matching hashes and you wouldn't get an incompatibility flag. The error can tick because of different engine executables (or versions) or different file structures. Are you using the same engine? If so, do you have the same mod folder name? If so, check the mod folder sizes (precise size in bytes; size, not size on disk). Are the folder sizes identical? If you get an incompatibility flag, odds are that you answered no to one of these questions.
Good luck,
V
