View Full Version : 2010 World Cup Bracket Prediction Thread
Now is your chance to be the .Org's football prognosticator extraordinaire. Guess the World Cup bracket results, and win the respect of fellow Orgahs and the admiration of women across the globe!
Rules:
Entries must be either posted in this thread or PM'ed to me (if you don't want to tip others with your picks) before the start of group play on June 11th, 1400 GMT(I think...). No edits should be made to these entries after the start of play, smack talking and discussion should be made in separate posts.
PM'ed entries with be made public once play starts.
I will try to post results and updated brackets/tiebreaker stats/point standings at the end of each round. (work schedule permitting).
The person with the most points wins. In the case of a tie, the tiebreaker entries will be used in ascending order to determine the winner.
Scoring:
Group Stage - 1 point (team advances out of group)
Group Stage Bonus - 1 point if team placement, 1st or 2nd in group, is correct
Round of 16 - 2 points per team advancing
Round of 16 Bonus - 2 points per pick if team is on the correct side of bracket
Quarterfinals - 4 points per team advancing
Quarterfinals Bonus - 4 points per pick if team is on the correct side of bracket
Semifinals - 8 points per team advancing
Semifinals Bonus - 8 points per pick if team is on the correct side of bracket
Finals - 32 points for correct pick
So to get the bonus points in all stages, you will need to correctly determine the group winners and runner-ups.
For reference, here are the groups:
France :france:, Mexico :mexico:, South Africa :southafrica:, Uruguay :uruguay:
Argentina :argentina:, Greece :greece:, Nigeria :nigeria:, South Korea :southkorea:

Some groups are quite easy to predict, others are impossible. I think goup A is the least predictable, it really could go any way. Group F - now that Drogba is out - I think is the most predictable.
I am relying on Serbia not to succumb to infighting, and on the Americans to take out Algeria for me.

I thought Group D was the most difficult, I could imagine picking the other two teams on another day.I think Serbia has far better players than Oz and Ghana.
Then again, maybe I'm still recovering from Serbia pwning France in the qualification round.
Which, come to think of it, perhaps isn't all that much of an achievement. And I hear Serbia has a lot of internal strife. Maybe I overestimate their prowess.
@Louis: I'll need your tiebreaker answers, and I take it you have Spain beating Brazil in the final?
@Sasaki: I know soccer has a bad reputation in the US, but 54 goals total? There are 64 total games in the tournament. :inquisitive:

Yeah and USA plays 8 games of the 64...8X4=32...54-32= 22, so that's only 34 0-0 ties in the tournemant, not that extreme.

Surprising how you've all gone for such conservative red card counts and goals scored. The last 5 world cups have an average red card count of 19.6. The average goals scored over the last 5 world cups is 147. Plus if you look at trends based on host nation (recent world cups only, for tactical reasons), there seems to be an affect over goals scored, with the defensive minded Italians hosting 1990 where only 115 goals were scored. So a chaotic country like South Africa should foster an attacking tournament.

Where did you hear about internal strife? The atmosphere within the squad (and among the nation and the press, too) is the best I've seen in the last 15-20 years...
EDIT: And what's a "wooden spoon" award?

EDIT: And what's a "wooden spoon" award?I dunno, Sarmatian. I thought I remembered reading about volatile internal peace in the Serbian camp somewhere. Don't know where again.
A google reveals that Antic has the authority to be above strife, that the traditionally unruly and fractious players accept his authority. I guess I misread the point of some article then. Whereas Serbia, which always draws from a tremendous pool of talent, has always been prone to internal strife, it is not at this moment.
(Which remains to be seen - will the peaceful atmosphere hold in the face of possible adversity?)
The 'Wooden Spoon' is the Scotland Lifetime Rugby Award.
the admiration of women across the globe!
And by that you mean the few women who come to the Frontroom like me, right? :laugh4:
Here's my entry, anyway, based a bit on previous WCs I've seen, strength of the groups, selected 23-man squads and relevant injuries, so on and so forth. I based my total goal prediction on the fact that some of the stadia can be unsettling and many of the teams, European in particular, won't like those darn plastic trumpets that the South Africans use and there could be some problems with the heat and such. :3
Hopefully the formatting came out right... I used the shorthand FIFA codes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FIFA_country_codes) because some of the country names were long and made formatting a pain. ¬_¬

Someone else should fire up a World Cup fans (babes) contest.
What the Dickens would that even entail? Checking out the WAGs? xD
And what is the Wooden Spoon award? Does it mean the team that scores the least, concedes the most, worst overall team, underperforming team? Or is it player-applicable?
The Wooden Spoon "award" is for the worst team in the tourney. Least points in the group stage (usually 0), with the worst goal differential. Think USA in 1998 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_cup_1998). ~
What the Dickens would that even entail? Checking out the WAGs? xD
You would have to clear it with the mods first, don't want to break the "babes in Babe thread only" rule.
Secura since you have the Netherlands getting to the final I'm surprised you haven't picked van Persie for Golden boot. He's been scoring for fun lately. 4 in the last 3 friendlies if I am not mistaken.

Spain have a far easier group and I'd expect Torres to get at least two or three in the two games he plays for the groups, and then perhaps one or two more in the knockouts; I don't think we'll be seeing someone win the award with a huge amount of goals, it's more likely to be around the five/six mark. :3

The Dutch power through to the finals, being on the fairly weak side of the bracket. Argentina find their form, beat England on penalties, and make it past Spain in an entertaining 4-3 match. Then, drunk with power and high on cocaine, Maradona benches Messi (the eventual Golden Boot winner) and puts himself in at forward to relive his past glory. The experiment is not a success, and the Orange get their star.
Speaking of stars, it doesn't look like England have one on their emblem. What's up with that? Do they feel guilty that the ball didn't actually cross the line in '66? Would they be breaking some sacred heraldric convention by adding one? Is the lack of the star the cause of their woes since '66? It's a very curious omission. :inquisitive:

How do I get this thing to work
How so? Just quote the OP, delete everything outside the code tags, and fill in the bracket and tiebreaks. I made the bracket lines 12 chars long, should hold the name of every country in the Cup. The code tags keep the char size fixed, so the formatting stays. It's not ideal, but I'm no webmaster. I'll fix formatting if necessary when I sum up at the start of the tourney.
The number-letter pair at the ends of the lines denote the first and second place teams of the 8 groups (A-H).

Joooray... if England are knocked out in the Round of Sixteen by Serbia, how do they miss six penalties?
Unless you're saying they miss one against the USA, one against Algeria, one against Slovakia and then three against Serbia? They're not that bad at them! xD
I base that final three on the fact that England currently hold the record for most penalties missed in a World Cup shootout (Lampard, Gerrard and Carragher against Portugal, Germany '06) and that I doubt any team would miss three and the shootout still be in a position to carry on unless the opposing team were equally as bad!

They were absolutely god-awful penalties; Lampard and Gerrard are both prolific scorers from the spot for their clubs, particularly the former, and yet both miss one of the most crucial penalties they will ever take on the international stage. I can only think that the circumstances of Rooney's sending-off (let's be honest, Ronaldo was interfering with the officials) had taken their toll on Lamps and Stevie GBH, and thus they failed to convert.
Owen Hargreaves is a fantastic penalty-taker who always seems to place them just out of the goalkeeper's reach (see his effort (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNG2-6KIXZY) during the Champion's League final in 2008; Cech didn't have a chance :3), shame he's not going to South Africa.
I need to hang out with my own gender more, clearly. xD
Just to clarify, the tiebreaker for English penalties is for shanked kicks. Saved PKs don't count. If the keeper touches it, it doesn't count towards the total.
Ronaldo interfered like any other player does, especially when his teammate is stepped on. Rooney should have: Watched his step, then watched his manners then watched his mouth in front of the ref. They simply failed to convert because they bucked under the pressure and Ricardo guessed the sides. Simple.
Hmm. I'm leaning towards Ghana getting second spot in Group D over Australia. Having read up on their tactics, etc, they really stand a better chance than the defensive minded Aussies, even without Essien. I wish I made my predictions after doing that. Regardless that is a tight, tight group. With 4 very tactically aware sides, but Germany has all the flair this time, with Ozil, Khedira and Kroos. Plus they are the World Cup specialists (with players like Klose, Podolski and Schweinstieger).
Regardless, it really is Brazil's to lose. They are a solid unit, with fantastic tactics, much like Mourinho's at Inter last season. They may not have the flair of a typical Brazil side, but they control games, compress the space and are lightning fast on the break-away.
My humble picks
Edit: I forgot the tiebreakers, see next post. :embarassed:
Oops, I forgot the tie-breakers in my previous post, here's the updated version since edited posts are not legal.

Joooray... if England are knocked out in the Round of Sixteen by Serbia, how do they miss six penalties?
I didn't really think that through.
Well I'll change it, also I wasn't only the missed PKs.
Thanks for pointing it out.

Next to this excellent pre-tournament game, there is also the in-game prediction game!
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?128428-The-unofficial-World-Cup-Thread/page3
Time to cast your predictions for the first matchday(s). Already, as we speak, those who think themselves knowkledgeable about anything football are having bitter arguments about who's right or wrong. This time, however, the Tavern will offer an objective measure about that.
Time for you all to join the fray and show the world who really knows his footy!

England beating Brazil is all about patrioitism... just don't have it in me to say they wont do it, never ever underestimate the Germans they're just like the Italians only with some German-ness that takes them over the top...
ohh and a winner ?
my brain tells me the Germans on penaltys my heart tells me England are going to take the thing 4-2 in extra time, with a hattrick from rooney sealing the golden boot (patriotism and loyalty the bane of football prediction!)
Winner
England!
Edit: even though you cant underestimate the Germans you can overestimate them, semi final place rather than final
Also Brazil for 3rd spot!
If my time math is correct, 12 hours til the start of play. So fill out your bracket or make final edits!

Okay, after having waited for the last minute to grab the latest news about who's out or not, here is my prediction table.
You may think I'm odd but I've spent 4 hours on the following table, checking every other player the teams have, taking looks at the statistics they bear and so on.

I had to make predictions on scores of every other match in the group stages so as to be able to figure out who'll make out as the 1st or 2nd and/or who'll be left out as the 3rd where points, or even the goal differences against each other, are equal. I can give out scores if you'd like to or should I save it for the other WC thread ?
Anyway, good luck.
Summaries of picks, let me know if I screwed up.

I don't really have a problem with waiting til Monday for the tiebreaks. Your group placement selections are different enough from everyone else where it probably won't matter anyway.
Grafite isn't even on the starting 11 and I'm picking him for the Golden Boot, shows how well I follow international football. Meh.

Hello drone, if any tie-breakers are needed, I lose.
4: Wooden Spoon "winner": North Korea
I have to say that I don't agree with this; they may have been drubbed 7-0, but they have scored a goal and gave Brazil a very good game; they're also in a very tough group where they're unhighly likely to come out with anything at all. On the other hand, Honduras haven't gotten off the mark yet with points or goals yet, haven't looked likely to either; the scorelines of both games have flattered them, because Spain and Chile both should have scored alot more than they did. They're in a fairly open group in my opinion; you'd expect Spain to top it, but beyond that, the other three teams are on relatively equal footing compared to the Group of Death.
Just my own opinion, though.
I'm just going by group points, then goal diff, then goals scored. And anything can happen in the final set of games. I seriously doubt this contest will be decided at Wooden Spoon.

Good predictions by Secura for the quarter- and semi-final results gets her into the lead, with woad&fangs just behind. Obviously, those hours spent playing FIFA Manager have paid dividends. They both have Spain for the winner, so anyone with Holland and 62+ points still has a chance. Which apparently means just me. ~D :netherlands: :cheerleader:

Secura: 94 + Spain

For grins, the tiebreaks:
145 goals total in the tournament, Elite Ferret was closest with 146.
Secura guessed the red card total on the nose at 17.
johnhughthom, Louis VI the Fat, and Elite Ferret guessed Villa for the Golden Boot, they came the closest. Mueller wins it with 5 goals and 3 assists.
SFTS, Jooray, Craterus, and myself got North Korea for the Wooden Spoon.
johnhughthom and Elite Ferret showed their confidence with England's PK abilities.

Congrats to Secura
T'was bloody good fun, pretty narrow contest right to the end.
I made an absolute mess of the left half of the the draw, but kinda pulled it back with the Netherlands-Brazil, Argentina-Germany and Germany-Spain results. Pretty funny that my stab-in-the-dark for the total red cards was right on the money too. xD
Maybe now my opinion will matter rather than "oh, it's that chick who supports United". :P

Germany over Argentina made the difference. Although I should have docked you, woad&fangs and Elite Ferret points for putting England through to the semis.

The thing is, England had the capability to progress; their group was easy, and the shape of other groups would have meant Ghana and Uruguay in the knockout stages, two teams that even the most pessimistic Englishman/woman would think England could get that past and progress to the semis. Instead, they ended up on the tougher side of the draw.
Part of me is glad that the reason I've preferred the Spanish national team over England for so many years has finally been proven to my friends and family; however, while they may not have beaten every team they played comprehensively (in fact, beating Portugal, Paraguay, Germany and the Netherlands by one goal each), they still played well in terms of passing and such. For me, it was still good to watch, whereas England was oft painful.

Hrmph. Chicks should limit their football involvement to a perfection of the art of serving you beer without walking in front of the telly. :snobby:
Bah, I messed up with all the little country upsets. I got Spain correct as winner, even down to their semis win over Germany and Germany beating Argentina in the quarters. I made a complete mess of the other side of the tournament.

lol, I am soooo glad that Dutchland lost. :P The only thing that would have made it better would be if the US team beat them. :beam:

Gah! That's my bad, I had you down with Brazil as the winners. Formatting/eye fail. Corrected standings.
Well I'm very pleased with a podium finish, thanks for doing the hard work drone :2thumbsup:
