so today i was online with AT&T tech support because the modem for the family computer wasnt working. the techie was this really southern woman who sounded middle aged.
she asked for my name, and i said it. for some reason she couldnt understand me even after i said it multiple times. so i got fed up, and said my name was Jason, which its not. she took it.

but whats interesting is that for some reason now i really like the name Jason, and i think ill change my name before college.
has anyone here ever legally changed their name before?

I've had my name changed to 'Starchild Sex Machine'.

Presumably you had to change it back to Strike after allegations of paedophilia?

Your name is you. I go by my middle name but I would never change it around.

What is it? Like mordechai?

id just like to clarify that the main reasons that i want to change my name is because i stutter it is hard to say my name, especially when i introduce myself to people.

He changed his middle name yes?

I'm probably going to do the same as pever. Never liked my middle name and it's a hassle on official documents where I have to write my full name. Which is long enough as it is.

You should do whatever will bring you happiness. No point struggling with something that brings you troubles. I had my tongue untied because it always made me feel less of a person (for lack of a better phrase). Simple stuff can bring a surprising amount of mental anguish.

Do you not have a middle name that's easier to say? That's always easier than changing your name. Or, if it's a Hebrew or otherwise foreign name, you could always try to find an English approximation -- for example, Joachim Fritz Krauledat, the frontman for Steppenwolf, changed his name to John Kay.

Or, you could just go all the way with your new name and call yourself something like Max Power. Or Truck Thunders. (http://5secondfilms.com/watch/the_ballad_of_truck_thunders) Actually, scratch that last one -- I'm claiming it.

The main thing, in my opinion, is to realize that its your life. Do what you feel is best.

I also shortened my first name

Not too bad. It depends how much it bothers you. I went to school with a guy who stutters quite badly, his first name especially.

If it embarrases you, or you get frustrated, its not a bad idea.

On the subject of changing my name, I still actually havent told any legal authority. Drivers license is still wrong, bank is still wrong etc etc....Its been like a month...

once i introduce myself everything goes fine, but its that initial introduction which is so frustrating. and to get a leg up in recruitment into the FBI requires to establish contacts within the agency, so you can get letters of recommendation. but to do so requires introducing yourself.

why are you changing your names? well, you could change your names used for social relationships and documents, but the name your parents gave with your birth will be stayed forever in your mum and dad's heart.... (if you know, my real name is the chinese one in the bracket, I used that for pretty much documents, my name in FB, well, is my Christian name - so my friends didn't have difficulties pronounced that...)

I have a stutter too, I understand your problem. Jason would be extremely easy to say. In the FBI you might go by your last name alot too so think about that. My name is Preston and it gets me every once in a while since the first syllable is the thing I always trip on.

But for real if your stutter is bad you should look into Ross Barrett's program at the Virginia Medical Institute. Something like SPFS "Speech performance fluency something" I can never remember it. It helped me out alot. It almost completely killed my stutter but I do have minor setbacks every once in a while but thats only because I stop using his techniques. Its expensive though and it lasts 2 weeks (maybe 1 week, they changed it maybe).

Southern people cant speak english correctly; much less a name. Their vocabulary of names is crap, everyone down there is named the same or some boondocks name like "Gator". They shouldnt be technical support even indian people are easier to understand.

Meh, change your name if you want to.

But, and I don't give advice, be sure you want to change it and never, ever do it because of other people. If they can't say it, tough, I can't say lots of words but that's my problem not theirs.

In other words, it's your life so make your choices on what you think is the way to go.

What the hell is wrong with you people? I guess this is what happens when you don't have any sense of family pride and lineage.
