View Full Version : Musical moods
It has been said many times before but some of the EB compositions, whilst fitting and accurate, can become slightly repetetive over time. I think everyone here has at some point started listening to something else or indeed been inspired to start an EB game based on a piece of music they have heard (I know I have.... so many failed Celtic campaigns:oops:).
Therefore, apart from the EB music, what music do people like to listen to when playing? And do people find some songs to be faction specific (e.g. maybe Ride of the Valkyries works for the Romani whilst Kraftwerk works for the Sweboz?)
Disclaimer: I think this question has already been asked before so don't accuse me of a lack of originality.
whilst Kraftwerk works for the Sweboz?)
Hahahahahaha awesome!
==========
I listen mostly to whatever I feel like listening at that moment. This means that whatever game I'm playing, I'll stick to the music I like. This basically means blues/country/folkrock. Apart from that, I don't feel the need to listen to anything "fitting" for that faction. However, it has seen the reverse effect!
Sometimes I like to play some of the Persian tunes TPC has written on my bouzouki (I even tried to play Apricot Mountain on the cornemuse). So listening to some of the EB stuff TPC has written, I feel kinda inspired, hehe.
When it comes to Medieval II, I love to listen to Faun and Al-Andaluz Project. The first is an experimental folk band that recreates medieval music, but uses synthesizers as well. The latter is a fully historically accurate representation of the music of Sephardic and Moorish Andalusia.

Actually, except for MP, I have turned sounds completely off while I'm playing and just listen to debates, interviews, speeches and the like almost exclusively by Christopher Hitchens instead. Personally I think this is an awesome combo, but it may just be me. ~;)

I think the music is ok (I prefer the civilized agrarian faction's music).
I love listening to the units shout their names or commands though:
HASTATI!!! PRINCIPES!!! TRIARI!!! Pedites extradindarii!!!!
Signa ferte!
Barbaro!
Spartiartes Hoplitai!!!
The music for EB is horrible. At least after you've heard it a million times (a million, really). It defines repetition. I usually listen to dance music while playing EB. A fellow player and I are making a music mod for it, and maybe it'll be released! maybe not!
Old school Clannad fits nicely for the Celtic factions.

It's raining men is good for the battles....
I generally listen to the standard EB tunes. But I do find that the Nomad tunes are more mind numbing than the Hellene ones.
Thanks Hax!

Thats an interesting idea, but I bet you have to take extra special care when playing battles?
Kikaz who are Clannad?
lol It's raining men. Although I have to say the nomad tunes are some of my favourite.
My least favourite would be the "barbarian" music, those endless repeating horns, so usually I like turn off the music on the strat map and listen to Folk Metal as it fits quite nicely (although it does cause me to make MASSIVE stretgic errors at times).

I ten to switch between my itunes and the ingame music so I dont get board of EB's nice music.
I also find that metal accompanies cataphract and elephant charges very well.:skull:

If I can get my current Aedui campaign finished (here's hoping) then I think I will try some Finntroll whilst playing a Sweboz campaign.

Any particular types?

Rammstein for Sweboz of course. Marching worgozez with Mein Teil are very inspiring. Or Die Irrlichter when on the campaign map.
The Dubliners for Celts. Tossers, Dkm, Blood or Whiskey, Flogging Molly as well.
Ennio Morricone's Ecstasy of Gold is the greatest cavalry charge song possible. It just oozes epicness.
Seriously, I defy you to find a better song for cavalry charges than it.
This is it, by the way.

Surely if you have all of them there, you need the Pogues as well?

Half the time I pick Pontos for a MP battle its just to hear that awesome opening music. No joke :).
Iain does have a good point, I doubt you could find a more epic song for a cavalry charge, although personally I find Iron Maiden's "The Trooper" also works well.
That's the longest cavalry charge I've ever heard (over 3 minutes long!)

He's playing on a really big map using exhausted units.

Hmmm but whenever I hear that I think a concert is not too far away....
Bu I do find that the Nomad tunes are more mind numbing than the Hellene ones.
Btw the Nomad theme I looked it up, it's "Nomad_TPC_Nomad2_WatchingtheHerd". When this starts I flick to other music on my pc.

No, not really. I may miss something from time to time, but it's practically never. I guess I've gotten used to it.
@ Ecstasy of Gold, thank you Iain! I've loved and wanted that tune ever since I first saw TGTBTU (the graveyard scene is just epic), which is about 13 years ago. Ennio Morricone is awesome.

I usually listen to the EB music, sometimes my mind ignores it but it never bothers me.
I know its a bit cliché but I guess pagan metal/folk could work for sweboz? Mehinr, XIV Dark Centuries, Heidevolk etc...
I usually don't mind just listening to the standard EB music. It does get repetitive, but it's not bad so I just leave it.
However, I do have an alternate playlist on my computer which is made up of my favorite music from a number of other computer games. I mostly use it for when I play Civilization, but I've used it for EB as well. It's made up of a lot of music from other Total War games, especially M2TW:K, which has the best music in my opinion. There's also music from games like Age of Empires and city-builders like Caesar and Pharaoh. It does not always go with what I'm doing in the game, since I just play it on shuffle, but at least it isn't repetitive, and all of it is good and is not just background music.
Behold! Clannad:

Also recommended are the songs (my other favorites): Dheanainn Sugradh, Mo Mhaire, and Dulaman. You'd best avoid their newer stuff, it's... Not so good.
Also look into Jethro Tull for more easily digested Celtic influenced music or Five Hand Reel or Boys of the Lough for more Clannady stuff. (Feel free to PM me if you wish to see a 30 song playlist of similar stuff that I compiled awhile back on grooveshark.)

For me, either the original EB themes or "Classical" music, covering the period from Medieval times to ca. 1900 AD. Or traditional music that is not overdone and horribly distorted by 19th or 20th century zeitgeist.
Most movie soundtracks just suck. Excepting stuff by Ennio Morricone of course.

Ugh. That song is far more suitable for Gaesatae, especially if you take into account its title...

hahah "There, that is my part"
I just got reminded of a youtube video wherein someone put Ich Will over a bunch of Whinnie the Pooh clips.
I challenge somebody to suggest good music to go with archers and skirmishers!
I think the old Medieval: Total War Arab music would work wonderfully with the Saba.
