i need another shooter for PC to get my heart pumping. i was going to reinstall rainbow six vegas but there is some bug that makes it so once you uninstall it you cant reinstall again. i know its dumb and theres no fix for it. stupid ubisoft.
im borrowing COD5 from a friend tomorrow, hopefully, but i need more suggestions.

anyhow, im looking for a shooter. no scary stuff like dead space or FEAR. i was looking at STALKER, but then i saw how there were monsters so no. it also needs a good single player because my internet connection isnt so great.
anyone have any suggestions?

If you have a decent rig I would recommend Crysis - the world looks amazing and I have had some utterly heart-pounding moments in that game (being chased for almost a kilometre by a helicopter with no way to destroy it, running from one piece of cover to the next, with trees being cut down by the machine gun as I go). The AI isn't stellar, but it is better than quite a few other shooters I could care to name. You can also pick it up quite cheap because it is a number of years old now. Most of my other favourite have some element of horror in them (FEAR, Bioshock, L4D2) so I'm afraid that's all I can recommend.

 Its not actually scary. I can't handle scary anything. I played Doom 3, had to shut it off in fear after the monsters were released.

L4D/2 doesnt have that popup horror, no scares, once you get used to the sounds, you can predict whats coming. Plus you play with up to 7 other people, so.

how long is the SP?

pevergreen

Technically infinate. In SP the levels change paths, in MP they are set. 5 starting campaigns plus the 1 new one in DLC, 4 difficulty levels, say new to them on normal, maybe an hour and a tiny bit each? The new DLC one (its free, called The Passing) is shorter. It depends on how fast you go through. If I rush, I can get through each one in 30-40 minutes on Normal. Compared to L4D1, where it would be 15-20 per campaign, they're quite nice. Each campaign is different.

Its on sale on steam right now http://store.steampowered.com/app/550/
USD$20.09

Operation Flashpoint is still the absolute king of military shooters. Far Cry 2 is pretty good if you got a meaty rig, it's not a stealth-game but a cautious aproah is always better. Shame you have no ps3, Killzone 2 is teh bestest war-shooter at the moment

far cry 2 looks good, maybe ill give that a whirl.
oh wait, its made by Ubisoft.

I'd be hesitant about FarCry 2. The game has some definite upsides, but also some massive plotholes and I find the gameplay can be really repetitive.

Eliminating STALKER simply because it has monsters is a bad call IMHO. Shadow of Chenobyl has sporadic monsters that only appear (mostly) towards the end game. And that is what made the game scary, on first play through you were expecting monsters, but they never really came, and when they did it was at key moments. Most of the time you were fighting people, with guns.

It ultimately fails, but at least it tries something different, you have to nurse it a bit for believability. The gunplay is great.

but needs monsters!

how long is the SP?

Rushed through the passing with a friend as fast as we could, took 35 minutes. I'd say it was the shortest of the 6 campaigns.

Girl came over to play it today, she wasn't scared by it, but she did squeal a bit once when there was an explosion.

I recommend STALKER and STALKER: Call of Pripyat (the third game). I do not recommend STALKER: Clear Sky (the second game)... at least not until you've played the other two first and really, really want more.

I also very strongly discourage anyone from buying Farcry 2. It was an atrocious game. It's the first game I never bothered finishing since Black & White.

Oh, yes... if you didn't get the Orange Box, you are missing what is probably the best valued FPS package in gaming history.

Why are you not interested in HL2? It's a superb shooter.

STALKER should be on anyones list there is nothing like it, right up there with classics like System Shock 2 and Deus Ex. There are monsters but their pressence totally makes sense in the absolutely awesome and very much realistic gameworld. It's not really scary but you will feel isolated because of the truly haunting atmosphere.

If you're too scared of monsters to play HL2, then skip the STALKER games as well. STALKER is far scarier than HL2.

You liked Farcry 2 and disliked HL2? You must be a Bizarro World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bizarro_World) gamer.

As I said earlier FC2 is flawed, but the shooting is good. AI isn't good enough to make it work but it was a good idea, let's see how Crysis 2 turns out, also sandbox. And Half-life 2 what to say, step back from the first which was already (imho) eclypsed by No one Lives Forever. Never understood the love for the Half-Life games.

When it came out, it had top-notch graphics, challenging levels, unique weapons, interesting puzzles, good level design, and superb set-piece scripting. While the story wasn't that strong and the ending was poor (prior to the release of Eps 1 & 2), the rest were more than enough to make it a 'good' shooter. The Half Life games are about as good as it gets when it comes to linear shooters. I agree they're not as fun as sandbox shooters (FarCry, Crysis, STALKER, etc.) but they're very good at what they do. There's a reason why HL2, HL, and the Orange Box are three of the top four games on metacritic (http://apps.metacritic.com/games/pc/scores/).

Even then, NOLF was so much better, both in gameplay and class. First HL hour was good but once you reached the surface it gets boring. No mechanical poodles to distract german shepherds just to start.

It is £3 or so on Steam.

It is more like Just Cause 2, nothing like Mass Effect 2. You go around, do missions, blow things up or use your hammer. Next to no story, mass communist revolution love, nice gameplay.

And it's terrible. Halo 2 on the PC defines the term "butchered port"

I really wish I could play these games but go with ArmA II and it's latest addon Operation Arrowhead (literally came it a week or two ago) from what I've seen.

As for Hooahguy, I'd second/third/fourth/and fifth all the Stalker games mentioned. It's a unique but really fun series of games to play. Like what was said before, there is nothing like them out there from what I could find. Also ifyou'r looking for military shooters check out ArmA II and it's addon whch I just mentioned. Next would be the Project Reality mod for BF2. It's multipayer only and has a solid community, though I don't know if you'll like the rigidness of it (not the best way to describe it but it makes for a great experience imo). Anyways, that's all I could suggest.
