I wish there was a search to see if someone else has posted this:

Am I the only one who has noticed that even after the Mongols settle in one spot, a lot of their unit roster never gets an upkeep value? It just remains at zero?

Notice that this is a unit created AFTER the Mongols appeared on the map, which means they were created in a city/castle. You can tell because the units experience is nil (when the Mongols first appear, all their units start out with at least silver chevrons=experience of 5 or 6).

This isn't the only Mongol unit on their roster to remain with zero upkeep! No wonder they are dang near impossible to eradicate! They never separate horde units from normal units!

Oh and I've tried searching but I can't figure out this forum's searching page. Its broken or something, as it just keeps refreshing the "you must wait between searches" page. And even on my very first search! I'm like "wtf I haven't searched for anything before this just send me to the results!"

I'm aware that plenty of their units DO gain an upkeep, but a large portion of their unit roster doesn't (and that includes a lot of the mongol infantry and mongol archers)

Do they get free upkeep due to certain buildings or does it just have to do with their financial balance? If they have to pay much upkeep during the first hundred years that they appear, they will go bankrupt even without the human player damaging their buildings. It is so rare in one of my games for them to take more than one city that I don't see them recruit much and then it is usually some cheezy Halberd unit, IIRC.

if they got bankrupt early, your mighty hungarian empire will have no real tough enemies then
oh yeah, they got horde unit as normal unit, and unlike in BI, their horde unit aren't auto disband when settled...

I used a spy in Kiev.
Notice they can recruit their nasty horse archer and heavy horse archer and lancer cavalry.
The Huge Walls they can recruit Horse Archers, and the racing track allows them to recruit lancers and mongol heavy horse archers.

I should show you my Russian saved game. I captured all the way to the balkans and the Mongols took ALL of Asia Minor!

When considering Mongols in M2TW, one mustn't lose from sight that they are to be considered as a bump ion the road for the player, something to prevent or hinder the player's expansion or force him to consider new startegies and tactics.

CA must have considered that required a little " cheating " hence the no-upkeep Mongols.

Please consider also the size of the stacks of Mongols appearing and the upkeep those would mean. If the Mongols were to gain a city with almost no loss of men, there's no way their economy could sustain such a formidable host for more than 2-3 turns.

I hope it was these considerations that were taken into account by the devs and not a simple mistake in coding (which can nevertheless be remedied quite easily...)

If that were the case, then how were they able to get hordes to function so well in RTW: BI? They should've been able to make exclusive "horde" units that still cost zero upkeep. If what you say is true, the Mongol's still exploit this zero upkeep fact. Notice they spammed units with zero upkeep with only 1 or two spear militia.

too bad, only BI support proper hording method AFAIK... M2TW did had horde-capability, but not much... and can_horde attributes didn't gave the desired result.

Wanted to add: in my current campaign, the Mongols have taken Kiev and maybe 1 or 2 northern "russian" settlements...

...all of the Mongol units are still zero upkeep... but mercenary units they've recruited do have an upkeep cost.

I think this is less a bug, and more a feature.

Not very fair, but hey, it's a war game ;)

By the time they come (80ish turns for the player to build an empire!), along with the retarded strategic AI - free upkeep still should not be much of an hassle for a somewhat functional player :)

You could consider it as just a way of representing that the actual Mongol lands are far more extensive.

Good point AggonyDuck, that's an interesting way to see it.
