I'd like to ask how getting traits work.

My generals and governors seem to be getting a ton of bad ones. Now i'm not sure if your treasury and taxation level plays apart like in RTW for some, but all my governors keep getting those extravagent traits that give a penalty to income.

Could this be from my treasury being over 100,000 or from my taxation levels being set at high?

In regular Rome if you didn't set yor goverened cities to high taxation you would end up with governors with bad finances. Is this still the case?

The next generation has started to come of age and their even worse.Everyone of them hates the sight of blood and are inept tacticians along with a slew of less than stellar traits across the board, and i can't understand why.

A few guidelines about traits:

- If you have too much money, your Family members will get bad traits, they will spend a lot etc...
- If you build taverns, (augures for Romans), your FM will became drunkards and stuff :)
- Build schools. If you have FM's in schools, even the bad ones can get some pretty decent traits and can became good governors.
- Have them lead many battles. Good traits are sure to come

Yup...., sounds like the real Rome... It was because of this that certain commanders stood out from the rest, and why the Senate would often bend (break) their own rules to allow them imperium. To paraphrase Marlene Dietrich, a hard general is good to find :dizzy2:

I have built the education system up.Now all of the new guys are Over Educated and Pedantic on top of being Morose or becoming Melachonic.:laugh4:

I thought the money issue might be the problem, but i can easily spend 10's of thousands of mnai in a turn on the advanced structures.I've even recruited a couple new armies and have been buying mercenaries up.The treasury just keeps bursting after a few turns of waiting for things to be built. Its not even like i have a huge empire..Italy,Sicily,Corsica,Sardinia,Balerics,Segestia,and Massalia.

If i cut back on taxes to normal or low will it give bad traits also?

I think it will. At least some bad traits are sure to come - perhaps people will be happier, but less money will go into your coffins.

The best way to spend the money as SPQR is to have a powerfull fleet at all times - make yourself the master of the Mediteranean, like Rome did IRL. That should keep you from having to much money and the bad traits. If you'll find yourself in dire need of money, just disband the fleets and woila! :2thumbsup:

I've changed my trait-file some weeks ago. IIRC there are Triggers for 50'000, 100'000, 150'000 and 200'000 mnai treasury. Everytime the chance is higher to get some of the bad traits, like Lover of Beauty. But I think the majority of this traits comes from different things. A big and well developed city increases the cance of getting corrupt, lazy and other bad traits, while beeing in a small town makes your FMs more spartan.
IIRC having high taxes also raises the chances for corruption, getting lazy, etc. so high taxes don't make you richer just because of the traits of the FMs.

It also depends it on the character of your governors. Obviously, selfish and unloyal characters will accumulate bad traits more quickly, but energetic and/or intelligent characters will also get restless if they are cooped up in a small, unimportant town.

Tell me about it.

I have a couple guys who i'm trying to find a post they find more befitting.Problem is that the larger cities already have good governors even with the warts.

Though i have one general i banished to Corsica from the get go because he seemed worthless with his flaws.I forget the trait he gained but he has taken to the task with diligence and also gained a couple other positive aspects.

Go figure.

Well, playing as Pahlava, after I built school and academy, my FMs in those cities got ascetic trait, then ascetic ancillary... that’s -200% to bribe resistance…

RE : Romani:

You will get some bad FMs, doesn't that add to the realism? Just make sure every adopted, married into the family, and coming of age FM goes to school for 3 years or so, in a city with a top level educational building. Early on, I send them all to Rome, later I have 3 or 4 bases of Education (e.g. Rome, Somewhere in Spain, Somewhere nearish Paris, Athens). The ancilliaries and benefits they get from being well educated, well outweigh the drawbacks of being slightly over or even uneducated. Some get a bit too pedantic, and atheistic, buit send them to govern somewhere, and they generally adopt the gods of that settlement quickly, and run the place better through their education background.

Don't worry about too much money either. In My last epic Rome campaign, I had around 14 million mnai in the bank, at the time I got the Marians (about 165 BC). I was still getting very good FMs, some eventually topping out with 10 man and 10 inf. The only building to really avoid, is the Augures building line, as Anubis pointed out earlier. This just causes mass drunkeness ;)

Gah! I have Augures in all my cities.

Where is Carrie Nation when you need her?

Oh wait i can just tear down the Augures.

Don't get me wrong i don't mind bad field marshals i was just suprised at the rotten crop that sprung up.

Beside ascetic, Pahlava FMs that are in cities with academy also can get Ashemaogha_Heretic trait, then Ashemaogha_Heretic ancillary, then the effect: <TroopMorale> -1, <Unrest> 1
