Host's comment: I'm thinking of getting back into hosting games, and I have an idea for a small and/or a large game set in an instance of the Rome: Total War universe. Basically, this little game will serve as warmup for me as a host, and a short introduction to the current situation in the Roman Empire, which is going to be the centre that the later game revolves around.

Gnaeus Julius sighed with relief as he got within eyesight of his home, a small but sturdy mansion with associated fields and woods where his family had the economic foundation that allowed them to contend in politics. It was almost a day's journey on horseback from the gates of Rome itself, and it was the only place where Gnaeus could truly relax, away from the reckless politicians and ambitious senators who shyed no means to win influence and personal glory. He snorted in defiance, realizing that he was one of the few men who were left of an older and more honourable breed, true to the original spirit and ideal of the most magnificent city in the world, Rome.

He knew that many of these political enemies were waiting for an opportunity to have him removed, and his reluctance to take the war to the Gaul tribes that bordered the northern areas that were under the jurisdiction of himself and family, and was always relieved when he came home to find his mansion untouched. He dismounted some fifty yards from the gate in the outer wall surrounding his home and smiled as he could discern the gates opening to recieve him in the last rays of the sun.

Was this his oldest son coming to greet him?

... As the gate opened, Gnaeus came to a halt. The figure who had opened the gate was aiming a bow straight at him. His throat was suddenly dry. "Why? Who?", he managed to rasp. His body was thrown backwards as the arrow entered his skull through his right eye. He managed to get up on his knees and hands and with his last, fading strength, he mumbled; "My sons... My wife..."
The figure with the bow shone a diabolic grin at him. "They will be taken care of."
Gnaeus tried to scream in frustration, but only a faint exhale left him as he collapsed in the moist grass and a pool of his own blood. His horse panicked and galloped from the scene, and the assailant returned towards the mansion.

Screams emanated from the family bedchamber and echoed through the night. Those who were awakened by the noise crept together in their rooms and found something to defend themselves, but no more people were attacked during the night. After what felt like years of painful vigilance in the dark, the inhabitants gathered in front of the house in the morning. They were seven people left, and among them, murders were loose. Isolated and far from the safety of the city, they would have to fight for their lives against those who sought to steal them away from them.

They went about burying Gnaeus, his wife, and his youngest son with a crestfallen attitude, sending each other mistrusting glares...

Game info:
In the day phase, vote against who you think is the murderer. Voting format is vote:Diamondeye for votes and unvote:Diamondeye for unvotes. Please note that you must unvote before you can vote against someone else. The person with the most votes at the end of the day will be lynched. In the night phase, the murderer will attack someone else and attempt to kill them. If anyone else has nighttime abilities, this is the phase to use them in.
Both day and night phases will be relatively short, 24 hours each, to keep the game within the 120-hour limit for mini mafia games - the only exception to this is the first phase, which will last 36 hours to get the game on tracks and establish the timeframe of the game. This means that phases change at 10 PM, my timezone (CET - Summertime savings?).
If you miss two votes in a row, or three votes during the course of the game, you will be removed from the game. Abstaining from night actions has no other reprecautions than the waste of a chance to use them, but for the sake of the game balance (and your team's chances), please send in orders every night.

Character PMs - EVERYONE HAS ONE:
Looks roughly like this:

Role Name: Title, Name
Ability: If any, described here
Loyalty: Julii - this is the innocent VC.
Background: Some fluff about your character's background, and what you were doing on the night of the attack.

Please note that all seven character PMs contain this info - even the mafia have been given these as cover, and there is no way to discern the cover roles from the 'real' roles whatsoever. Not any reliable ones, anyway.
You are welcome to reveal your PM to another player in private, or in public, if you wish to, or simply hint at its contents (such as your title and name).
The sending title of all PMs are of the same format;

Mini Mafia Role: Title, Name
The mafia's true titles/names are not in the sending title.

If you have any questions or concerns about the game that have not been touched upon, feel free to bring it up in the thread or in a private message to me!

The game has begun!

Not part of this game, but I have a hint for you all! Gnaeus was clearly a cyborg sent back into the past! The dude had an arrow IN HIS BRAIN and still managed to get up. The guy you're looking for is a heroic assassin of evil cyborg Roman politicians, not a cold blooded murderer!

I made a minor mistake when counting hours ahead from the opening post; Where it says 36 hours, it really needs to say 34 hours; this means that there is roughly 3 hours left of the current phase. Sorry for any convenience.

And some information for future posts - especially for the newer players - editing a post with a vote in is no good. If you make a mistake you think need fixing in a post with a vote, please post another reply with the vote in, that you bring the proper to attention to a change of votes.

Day 1 Ends:
After the initial shock had dispersed among the seven people that were left, they were quick to get down to the business of trying to track down the killers. Most of them were very well aware that their lives were at stake if they could not catch the killers in time. they argued back and forth, and several people were quick to accuse and be accused. The atmosphere grew more intense as the sun began to set, and it seemed that a conclusion to the debate of the day had been reached.

A plurality of them had found reason to believe that Skoooma Addict had played a part in the murder of Gnaeus and his family - after all, wasn't their security his job? He was cornered in the fading light of day, clenching his gladius desperately. "What's this, Cassius," one of the accusers remarked, "so desperate to protect your own life, yet unwilling to protect your master? I think you're hiding something!" Cassius sighed as he saw the blades in the hands of the men approaching, and threw his blade away, knowing that even a man of his caliber could not fight his way out of this. He kneeled. "Give me a soldiers death," he mumbled. "Quick and clean. Like my master and friend would have preferred himself. I hope you find the bastard who is guilty."

The men hesitated for a second before regaining their decisiveness and one of them stepped forward and quickly slit the throat of the kneeling, broken man.

Skooma Addict, the personal guard Cassius, was loyal!

It is now night 1 - please PM me night orders, those of you with abilities.

Night 1 Ends:
Everyone hurried to their chambers, locking them and storing a weapon close to their beds. Apparently, peace befell the mansion once more. But someone ventured outside, refusing to go to sleep before he had finished hisn usual duties towards the now-dead master. God Emperor sat, bent over the administrative papers that reported of the economy of the family that had been all but wiped out. In stoic silence, he printed rows of numbers in a complex system that he was now the only one who understood fully. A noise disturbed him, and he turned around, suddenly nerveous. In the doorway stood a figure with a bow in hand, aiming directly at him.
"You?", God Emperor managed to whisper. "Why?"
But the figure only smiled and let the arrow fly. Evasion was impossible at this close distance, and the force of the arrow irresistable. The murderer left the steward of the house bleeding all over his important financial documents.
God Emperor, the steward Alexander Domitian, was loyal!

And so, it came to pass that the next morning, only five people assembled. It meant another burial to attend, and it meant that another attempt to catch the killer was necessary.
It is now day 2!
Night comes in roughly 23 hours!

What's wrong with pressure on Tiberius? This round is almost over, and you seem to be sneaking by, voting late, while giving the impression you're being inquisitive without actually generating much discussion or controversy. It feels to me as though if the round stands as-is, what will happen is that we will have guessed the wrong person. Your implied support of Tiberius may be a ploy to make yourself look good if he turns up innocent. If you don't like pressure on Tiberius, maybe you'd be willing to comment on what you've been up to, yourself.

I had no problem with pressure on Tiberius, that was just a justification to not vote for him myself. The second part was the same argument Cute Wolf used to justify his vote.

What exactly would you like me to say? We lost another loyal person last night which means that two loyal people have died without any retribution. It seems that I have become a convenient target because of the death of the family steward, which depreived me of an important ally. My day one vote on God Emperor was more because he voted on me first, no other reason. As of now I really have no solid idea for a vote and I will not see another innocent bandwagoned for the sake of it. Day 2 Ends:
The five men once again gathered just before sundown, and the debate this day could easily match the intensity of yesterday's. In fact, when the sun was set low and they knew that their discussions had to turn to fatalistic action, it seemed as if two parties had formed. One accusing Tiberius Of The Drake, and another accusing the man known as Cute Wolf. A brawl broke out and both men sustained bruises and minor enjuries before Cute Wolf was finally pinned up against the wall. The bulgy man who had served the Julii family as a cook for lots of years broke down crying. "I'm sorry, they had my family, I... I had to do it! I killed her - them! - I have the blood of a child and a woman on my hands, end me that I may rush up and talk my case for Jupiter himself!"
Sympathy was not offered the murderer, and a blade was drawn over his throat in the middle of the next sentence that he almost blurbed up; "I can't betray them, even now. They have my fa-"

Silence came as the gurgles of the dying man drowned out in a gush of his own blood.
Cute Wolf, The Cook Sixtus Marius, was a murderer!

Night 2 Ends:
In the darkness outside the mansion, everything was quiet - except for a faint mumbling. In the direction of the source, a kneeling figure was vaguely illuminated by a lamp. The figure was kneeling in fervent prayer over the makeshift grave of Gnaeus Julius. Coming closer and clearly discerning the figure, a stranger could make out the bearings of the kneeling person as a boy caught between the stature of a child and a grown-up. It was the oldest and only-surviving son of the dead senator, Aulus, lost in fast prayer. The stranger drew back the string of the bow, the vague noise of the effort undiscernably drowned out in the noise of the prayer. The adolescent fell silent and sat up as if electrocuted only when he heard the noise of the bowstring slip. The arrow, meant for his skull, went straight into his neck and he collapsed over the earth where underneath, his father's body rested in the cold peace of death. Soon, they would be united in the realm of Hades.
Tiberius of the Drake, Son and Heir Aulus Julius, was loyal!

The stranger thanked his luck for finding the last heir of the house Jullii and went back towards the bedchamber.
A terrible scream pierced the dawning day as the first of the three survivors saw the gruesome scene - the son, dead on his father's grave. Had the Gods no mercy?

There was no longer time to save the House Julii, but they had one last chance to catch the villain behind and expose his crimes - and to get revenge!

What I would believe is that there was a distancing attempt.

Autolycus > Joooray

Cute Wolf > decides to bus Joooray, thus making him look innocent.

Then, Auto switches to Cute, Tibs switches to Cute, Joooray was already voting for Cute.

It's also entirely possible that there was no intentional bussing. I've had mini games where the two mafiosi are on the same team and who each other are. The Night Santa Went Crazy, for example; one mafia accidentally lynches the other mafia, and went on to win the game due to cred.

autolycus

One more comment; I was active all the way up to the end of the round. If Cute Wolf and I were partners, we could have waited until the very end of the round, not two hours beforehand, to switch to Joooray.

There would have been no way to counter that, and it would have been game over. And that's exactly what I would have done. There's no need to leave 3 1/2 hours of mind-changing time before my vote switch and the end of the round.

Day 3 Ends:
The three remaining survivors had gathered in an atmosphere of decisiveness, but it quickly turned to desperation in their lack of solid clues. Finally, the laundress was seized by one of the others, autolycus. She protested and yelled, but the man who restricted civplayah only believed it to be evidence of her guilt. While he struggled to keep her, he bade the other man, AskThePizzaGuy, to go find a weapon that they might end the life of the traitor swiftly and with no unnecessary brutality. The woman went into hysterics. "What are you doing! Release me, you're making a mistake!"
The man who restrained her had many years of training from the legions, and indeed had been hired to train the sons of Gnaeus in martial arts and Roman discipline. He was unflinching in the face of the hysterical woman and patiently waited for the other man to exit with a weapon.

Finally, he looked up at the sound of the door of the mansion closing. AskThePizzaGuy exited with a weapon in his hands, but not any weapon. Only his discipline as a soldier let him keep his grasp through the shock as autolycus stammered, "Where did you find that bow, Decius? Gnaeus was found with an arrow through his-"
AskThePizzaGuy broke him off; "Oh, it's mine alright." Without further ado, he let the first arrow fly, striking autolycus in the chest and sending the man gasping back on the ground, releasing his constriction of the laundress. "And the name's Decius Brutus, by the way," AskThePizzaGuy added, no small amount of malice seeping into his voice as he let another arrow fly, robbing autolycus of his life.
autolycus, the martial trainer Gaditicus Casitas, was loyal!

The shocked and hysterical laundress, civplayah, got up and looked at the murderer in front of her. "You scum! Rascal! Verily, the honor of your entire family will be in tatters once the world knows of your misdeeds here!"
The Brutii assassin shrugged. "Oh, but they won't know. A little more blood will wash these hands clean as snow."
The laundress shrieked in agony and fell to the ground as the arrow pounded into her chest. As the assassin left the scene and found his horse, ready to start for his home with the message of a job well done, the lifeblood of civplayah soaked the grass around her.
civplayah, the laundress Sofia Calpurnia, was loyal!

Mafia (Brutii) victory!

Congratulations to AskThePizzaGuy and Cute Wolf, and thanks to you all for playing!

The postgame discussion can commence now, at will. I will post all role PMs later.

I hope to see the veterans from this game in the next game in this setting, whenever I may have the time and energy to undertake such a venture without the delays that sadly lengthened this game a little.

As is traditional for me, I would be lighting up a cigar with Cute Wolf and then tossing it on the pile of bodies, but the Romans didn't have tobacco and Cute Wolf is dead due to my own incompetence with maths... (did not count down the hours correctly last round, and that was my bad) I will simply pour myself a celebratory goblet of wine, one for me, and one for my fallen homey. Then with the lantern oil on the bodies of the fallen, and I'll rub sticks together to start a fire. Somehow I will make it work, darn it.

Thank you gentlemen for a fun game.

If civplayah had voted, I almost certainly would have switched back to you, atpg, but I don't much like the coin flip for decision.

I pretty much knew that. I knew I didn't actually have you fooled. I just had to give you what you needed to hear to consider it mildly plausible.

If I lost then I lost, I should have lost the game when I did not LAST SECOND switch my vote with Cute Wolf. I miscalculated and we did it too early. So I deserved to lose at that point. But I wasn't going to just lay down and admit defeat. Even if I lose there's a bit of theater and suspense and doubt involved.

Nobody would have any fun playing with me if I conceded defeat when I was beaten. I'll just consider this my birthday present, as it is right now, my birthday. :balloon:

Thanks again everybody.

This will once again spark a cycle of lynch pizza, innocent, lynch pizza, innocent, lynch pizza, innocent, don't lynch pizza, guilty. It's been that way for almost a year now.

Seems I should have stayed in the game after all. I could have voted yesterday and I would have at least tried to defend myself a little.
Not sure if it would have been enough to get Atpg killed though.

So all in all I enjoyed this game a lot, thank you Diamond.

Sorry I didn't vote, I didn't want to randomly vote at the end, and I was waiting for...

Well, I don't know what I was waiting for. Good job, mafia!
