Hey all, I have been working on my map for day 3 of gettysburg and have my layout set up and I think it looks pretty good as far as the land and scenery goes.
However not being an expert at creating custom anything I ask you to bear with me in how slow this is going...but it is going.
At the moment I have a custom map for a single battle. I have units set up for attacking and have picked my units for defending. The problem is, on the large map I created I do not get to place my units far enough back. And the enemy units start on the close side of tarrytown road instead of the far side at the tree line. I notice the map decides the area the attackers and defenders start and you just have to go from there. How can I..if possible.. set my custom map/ battle so that my defenders can start further back and the attackers also start at the end of the map?

Yes you write the coords into the adf file
in the
Battle\batinit\Historical Battles\YOUR_BATTLE folder.
adf.txt
Position :: bla bla bla, bla bla bla
Direction::0 to 360
and so on
you can set most things in this file.
It was the only way to do it in the demo.
If you wanted a custom battle.
It still is if you ask me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Lord Krazy one last question, can I set the way certain units set up? I want the AI musket units to set up in lines 2 deep, they seem to default to 3 deep lines or 4 deep lines. Even though being 3 deep they tend to be able to fire a bit faster with rotating lines, they get chewed up by my 2 deep units that put much more lead in the air each volley.
Where can I set up the formation the units will move into once the battle commences?
One last thing am I able to set the location of starting units in a .cgf file. Under /customgames/late ?

I answerd mr first question about how to make a default unit set up. Isee that in the colums section.
Now I also see what I am doing wrong with my map creation. I am just using the map editor fuction and creating a new map in there, but that does not create the files that are listed to have battles with in the historical campaigns. So now the trick is to make the correct files. too bad too the map I used making the map editor looks very good and pretty much on for gettysburg minus the fences and stone wall. (all this thanks to living not far from there and referencing my pictures and video tape of the Battlefield.)

Krazy you still here?
Hello,
That's right. You have to create all the files yourself. Wordpad is the tool here.
It's some work, but not impossible hard.
Let's say you want to call the battle gett.
Open MTW\Battle\Batinit\Historical Battles. You'll see at least 3 folders there. Folders with names of battles you can play as Historical Battle. Make sure you select a working battle and make a copy of the entire folder in MTW\Battle\Batinit\Historical Battles. Rename the directory to gett. Open gett and rename the BDF file (there's only 1 BDF) with the name of the battle to gett.bdf. Same name. BDF and ADF files can be read and edited with wordpad/notepad.
You could check whether the new battle gett is recognised by playing it.
If it works you can start changing things in the BDF and ADF files to make your own battle.
A good start is to edit gett.bdf so that it uses your map.
The ADF files descibe the units of involved armies.
If you managed to get a Hist battle working, you can make more than 1 and link them together in a historical campaign.

GREAT Thanks alot. So far so good. What is the bif file? Wordpad does not work for using that.
Well I placed the map and changed the name to point to the map but I do not show the battle coming up at all.

The bif is a graphic, in this case a flag.
A bifreader2.1 or 2.2 from can be downloaded
from 3d downloads to edit them.
Where did you put the map?

If it's a user made map, it's most likely in SaveMaps. It won't work then. Move the map to Battle/Maps.
Did you rename both the folder and the BDF file to gett?
You can forget about the BIF for a moment.

In the battle folder there is the maps directory so I put both files for the map in there.
I feel stupid about the bif, I new the answer to that the moment you said it was a graphic.
I did renamed the folder and bdf file to gettysburg.
Ok you guys rock, I had named the folder gettysburg but named the bdf the battle of gettysburg. Once I changed that to just gettysburg Two battle of bannockburn appeared in historical battles (that is the folder I copied)
So now I just need to change it so it will say gettysburg there. Also where can I find the files to change the summary for the battle if possible?
Next question (for now) has anyone made a graph of the default map layout as far as positions go, I figure that would make it easy to figure out what numbers to put for unit locations?
Thanks again both of you for all the help you have given me

//
// Battle description file
//
Predefined::false
Title::"BLA BLA BLA"
Author::"SHAW"
Rating::"Medium"
Description::"One day a load of guys got killed in a battle"
Conditions::"The Yank's have to kill all the Reb's"

Well one corner is 0 0 and 5000 = 100 meters
So if a map is 50000x50000 in size
then the center of the map is 25000 25000
This is how the range can be worked out
for artillery before the battle also.
The unit's flag is placed on the coord's chosen
direction is 0 to 359 degrees
Hope this helps http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Quick update, I am able to bring up my map with the default units on it. Right now I am working on fine tuning the positioning of units. I am still debating allowing you (the defender) the ability to pre-position units.
So all in all I believe it is coming along well thanks to all your help. I plan to have the finished product by this weekend.
Last issue though, I have the musket unit you have made Lord Krazy but I still have not been able to find the calvary musket unit.
Either for THIS battle calvary did not play a major role, however for the first day of figting they did and I do wish to recreate that as soon as day three is completed.
Thanks again for all your help Krazy and TosaInu

Ranger,
at the moment we are working on some
1800 century unit animations.Give me a week or
so and I will do one infantry and cavalry unit
fore each side.
Although cavalry in this battle is not needed is it?
They fought the first crucial delaying action
I know,but on foot in skirmish line.
That's not to say I don't want to
see Beauford Gamble and Devin
I'll send a sample of a unit next week if you like.

Excellent I would love to get my hands on a copy of each unit, and of course full credit will be given to you and or your team if my battles are worth putting out there to the public.
What you are making will be fine endeed I am sure (even though the american civil war was 19th century) I just wish I could buy you a beer for the help you have given me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I am also glad to see that you know the history a bit of this particular battle. The first day was mainly dismounted infantry delaying the confederates. However on the second day the confederates performed a major calvery action that saved a battalion of confederate infantry from certain destruction at the hands of the Union. This incident is drowned out that day by the battle of little round top but it is still facinating.

So was Austerlitz, Waterloo, Solforino, and Balaclava.
We hope to do all these.
We still have a lot of work to do
balancing the stats for the cannon, musket
and rifle.
