Title pretty much says it all. I'm getting sick of trying to play CD's through a portable CD-player through my car's cassette player and figure an mp3 player going through the cassette player will at least be less stuff to manage. I just don't want an ipod because I hate itunes and I don't want to bother with some third party software for the ipod. Plus they're expensive and I don't need a status symbol. I only need something with around 4-8 gigs of space most likely; my current audio collection is about 4.5G give or take. Bonus if there's a way to sync it up to foobar2000.

Years ago, I got a 20GB iRiver and was perfectly happy with it.

I don't know what their current product line is like, but maybe something like the E150 (http://www.amazon.com/iriver-Digital-Media-Player-Black/dp/B002X7872G/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1282880450&sr=8-3-fkmr1) would suit your needs.

Creative MP3 players are great. I have a Zen micro from 2004 that's only just started to take a crap on me. When I get a new one it will be another Creative Zen.

You could also save a lot of money and get a >$100 radio from a scrap yard that has a CD in it. You could also spend $150-$200 and get a Pioneer or JVC radio that has a USB port in it so that you can play hundreds of songs right off your thumb drive. That would cost less than most MP3 players and would be a lot more functional...

I don't think your properly considering how cheap MP3 players that don't have ipod or Zune on them are. A non-video 16GB player from Creative or Sandisk is less than $100.

You are right, I did not know you could get them that cheap. Also keep in mind however that a car kit usually costs more.

Twenty whole dollars. Such a HUGE expense.

He already said he has a cassette player adapter for his CD player. There should be no reason why he can't continue to use that.

Yes, but my point is that instead of continuing to rely on adapters, he could get the real deal with all its convenience with just as much or less. What is the point in getting an MP3 player for a car?

None what so ever. I've done it. Works just fine, you've got to crank the volume and maybe adjust the EQ.

Well, it would also make it easier to carry music around anywhere, not just the car. :P And I'm not sure I really want to spend money on really upgrading my car when it probably won't last until next inspection (~1.5 years). By then I'll probably have a new (used) car that will be much more likely to have a built in CD player. I'll take a look at the creative and sandisk catalogues...

I don't know about the mp3 players nowadays, but I do know that I have a Sansa View 8GB from a few years back. Still runs sweet. Wish it would run RockBox like the E250 did, or whatever the model was (the small ones that are 4GB).

Personally I find my phone provides a decent enough job as a MP3 player without the need for lugging around another gadget.

But for those who don't have a phone, or can't afford a fancy smart phone....

The number of people who don't have a phone these days is dwindling.
The devices we are talking about are often over £100, so we're not finding a device for the slums of India.
Many, many phones play music and have done for years. Smart phones are often not as good at music than some, much cheaper others as they are currently the jack of all trades.

Smart phones are pretty much little pocket computers, I'd guess a lot of it simply depends on what sound chip they install on it, Smartphone or not.
My last Smartphone didn't have the best sound quality either but since I mostly listen on the train or bus or wherever there is background noise anyway, it hardly matters IMO.
Then again I'm not an audiophile by any means and get used to almost any kind of quality unless it's really bad.

I get it, people like me who can't/won't afford a phone are a shrinking fast. But they do exist
