Hey y'all.

As some of you may know, (probably nobody, but hey), I'm doing the International Baccalaureate Extended Essay, and whilst I WAS going to be doing it on the Bactrians, there is simply not enough there, so I'm now doing the Teutoburg Forest. I am aware that this is right at the end of EB, but hey, you guys know your stuff.

So I was wondering, where did all the information for the Germani come from? (Language, names of Troops, Weapons, etc) I'd really like to know (preferably websites)

HAHAHAA, CHEEEEEEEEEE, YOU :daisy:!!! WHATS GOOOOOOOOD, HOMBREZ?!!

Hahaa, you crazy bastard, it's good to see you again! You may have been here for a while, but I haven't been to the EB Tavern for some time, so I wouldn't know. Anyways, IIRC, I believe some highly intelligent members of the EB Team actually reconstructed this ancient Germanic language in some weird way. Mind you, I haven't seen this thread in years, but I remember someone inquiring after the language, and someone responding to it. What I am quite unsure of, though, is whether these highly intelligent members went about constructing the proto-Germanic language through their own research and scholarly opinions/theories, or whether they sniffed their noses in some language theory widely accepted amongst the closed-in academic circles amongst the world's universities or whatever, you know? Maybe a bit of both, who knows but them and lord God the Creator, Kichi Manitou?

Tell you what. Just for you, Imma go see what I can dig up.

EDIT: It seems the key players you would be looking for are Blitzkrieg, Ranika, Antony and maybe some others. Most, if not all of 'em, are gone, their ashes thrown in the wind.

You might find some interesting links in these, but I think we're better off if a team member came in and got one of the language experts to share their bibliography.

cmacq and the tank are our current main German historians. In case you guys were wondering. Blitz used to be our germanic language guy, so any post by him on that matter are most informative.

If you are intending to examine the origins the Germani and the archaeology of the Jastorf culture (this may seem like a really obvious and stupid thing to say) but you will need to be able to speak German, unlike the Gauls and Halstatt culture very little (that I know of) material regarding the Germani is published in English. Obviously most of this will be tangential to the issue of the Teutoberg forest but it might help set the scene.

The classic study of the origin of the word Germani and the Germanic languages Hachmann (1962) "Völker zwischen Germanen und Kelten". This is probably the best place to start.

Good luck!
