First things first: The Orgahs have a little competition going about who can pick the games best. Last year, the title came down to three people for the very final game. See you there!

Well, here we go again folks. With the inaugural Thursday game drawing near, it's time that we dive deeply into the weekly glory that is professional football. A few storylines that stacked up over the offseason were the Raiders' release of one of the biggest busts in draft history, the Redskins and their little drama with Albert Haynesworth, the Jets seemingly signing every single free agent out on the market, and *insert obligatory Brett Favre comment*. It's shaping up to be a very interesting season, and quite possibly the last one we'll have until 2012 if the labor dispute doesn't get settled. Here are my divisional picks, plus comments:

NFC East: My home division is shaping up to be tougher than ever with its weakest team - the Redskins - getting a legitimate head coach in Mike Shanahan and upgrading its QB from Jason Campbell to Donovan McNabb. I still don't think they have enough to contend though, and McNabb will be missing the O-line he had in Philly before long. Dallas looks great on paper this year, and following logic of the past years, they're going to underachieve. The Eagles are retooling with Kevin Kolb and one of the youngest teams in the league, which means the Giants win the division by default. I don't think any team in the division will have more than 9 losses though.

Giants
Cowboys (wild card)
Eagles
Redskins

NFC North: As with the last few years, this division is going to come down to Packers vs. Vikings, with the Lions still rebuilding and Da Bears still denying that they have to rebuild and adding overpriced "talent" such as Julius Peppers. As with a lot of people, I'm skeptical that the Vikes will be able to repeat what they pulled off last year, with Favre and his receivers both looking fragile. Despite this, they still have a great O-line, RB, and a decent defense, and as long as that holds up they won't fall out of contention. However, the Packers have been doing the right things for a few years now and Aaron Rodgers is primed to have a monster season.

Packers
Vikings (wild card)
Lions
Bears

NFC South: A lot of people are picking the Falcons to overtake the Saints, considering the Falcons *did* make the playoffs two years ago and finished with a winning record, and Matt Ryan's been growing ever since. I don't see it happening, though. The Saints won the Super Bowl last year and have pretty much the same team coming back. I don't know if they'll repeat or not, but they will have enough to squeak by in the division. Bringing up the rear are the Panthers who could be dangerous if everything clicks right, and the Bucs who are in full rebuilding mode.

Saints
Falcons
Panthers
Buccaneers

NFC West: Just an all-around bad division. The Seahawks have finally bit the bullet and are starting over, and they won't be much of a threat. The Rams obviously have been horrible for years, and while they'll start to turn it around this year, these things take time. This leaves the 49ers and the Cardinals. The Cards, while having done well in the playoffs the past two years, will soon find out that the loss of Kurt Warner makes them pedestrian once again. Will this be enough for the 49ers to finally ascend to the top? I don't know, but since they seem to be on the rise and the Cards don't, I'm going to follow the trends.

49ers
Cardinals
Seahawks
Rams

AFC East: Popular wisdom has this division going to either the NFL-royalty Patriots or this year's official "sexy pick", the Jets. I don't see either, however. People seem to forget that Randy Moss is getting up there in years and Wes Welker is coming off major knee surgery, and the Patriots have simply been bleeding out too many guys over the years. Likewise, the "sexy pick" almost never ends up actually following through, no matter how stacked the Jets appear to be. Therefore, my pick for this division is the Miami Dolphins, who quietly had a good year last year with a ridiculous schedule plus they added Brandon Marshall. Don't count out Bill Parcells for long. Do count out the Buffalo Bills though.

Dolphins
Jets (wild card)
Patriots
Bills

AFC North: Nobody knows what's really going on in this division. The Bengals won it last year, but then completely folded in the playoffs which makes people think it was a fluke. Likewise with the Steelers, who are down Ben Roethlisberger for the first four games and missed the playoffs last year anyway. The Ravens have made all of the right moves in the offseason, finally giving Joe Flacco a legitimate receiving corps, but nobody still knows if Flacco can get it done in pressure situations or not. Lastly, there's the Browns, who... have Jake Delhomme as their starter. 'nuff said.

Ravens
Steelers
Bengals
Browns

AFC South: Essentially the same team last year that, led by the best player in the league, started the year 14-0 and made it to the Super Bowl. As tough as this division is, the Colts are still the clear favorites. Their main competition this year appears to come from the Houston Texans, who have been on the brink for a couple of years now but still haven't managed to break through. It's worthy to note that the Texans finally got a full year from Matt Schaub this year, who is pretty injury-prone. I doubt this will happen again, and thus my pick for second place will go to the Tennessee Titans, who a rejuvenated Vince Young will lead to 9 or 10 victories simply because that's what he does. Bringing up the rear is the Jacksonville Jaguars, who will continue to tread water.

Colts
Titans (wild card)
Texans
Jaguars

AFC West: The Chargers are starting to show some cracks this year, with Phillip Rivers's best receiver MIA and having no running game to speak of, but they're still the Chargers and the rest of this division sucks anyway. The Chiefs will close the gap a little bit and claim a clean second, but they'll need to seriously overachieve if they want to catch San Diego. I don't think Denver has enough weapons to challenge for anything, and while the Raiders will finally *not* be horrible, they still won't be good, either. Basically, this division as a whole has improved from "terrible" to "mediocre".

Chargers
Chiefs
Raiders
Broncos

Final predictions:
NFC: Packers over Saints
AFC: Colts over Ravens
Super Bowl: Packers over Colts

Good luck to all and let's have a great season! :medievalcheers: If you're in for the pool, your predictions are due by the Thursday game.

dixon to wallace is just not the same as roethslisberger to holmes. But their defense is back healthy and they had some close losses last year.

Delhomme is probably a huge upgrade for the browns. They aren't too bad.

Ravens add boldin and housh :furious3: They have some problems with their secondary though.

Owens and greshem are huge upgrades over coles and coats however. After henry was put on IR for the season other teams double covered chad and no one else could catch.

In other news, I finally caved in and joined a fantasy league with some RL friends this year. This will be my first fantasy league ever, our draft is tonight, and I only have the slightest idea of what I'm doing. Any suggestions?

Suggestions would depend on the rules. Auction draft, or regular (snake) draft? What are the scoring rules (yardage points, points for rushing/recieving/passing TDs, defense/ST point schemes, etc?).

If you have only done a minimal amount of research, then apply the basics. Don't take kickers or defenses until the end, don't take tight ends in early rounds. Make sure everyone else drinks heavily.

All right, I think I did pretty well. It's an 8-team league, snake-style draft. I picked 3rd. Here's how it came out:

Ray Rice RB 8
Peyton Manning QB 7
Miles Austin WR 4
Jamaal Charles RB 4
Brandon Marshall WR 5
Brent Celek TE 8
Steve Smith (Car) WR 6
Vince Young QB 9
Dal Defense 4
Santana Moss WR 9
Jonathan Stewart RB 6
Donald Brown RB 7
Heath Miller TE 5
Dez Bryant WR 4
Rob Bironas K 9
Devin Hester WR 8
Ricky Williams RB 5

gah, a pick six and a KR touchdown. Harsh.

Despite the loss I'm very pleased. We lost to the jets (and had major troubles during the season) because of our horrible kicking game and post-henry troubles in the passing game. Both appear to be fixed. Nugent has hit 3 straight from over 50 and if I'm not mistaken carson and chad had better days than they had all last year (pick six aside :p). That may have been on greshem anyway (I can't really tell), who is still learning.

What I heard was that Reid looked at the film, saw that the O-line was not up to the task, and decided that Vick, being much more mobile, would be able to evade the rush and exploit it better than Kolb. I know he loves Kolb, but he probably realizes that putting him in until the line gets better will just result in another concussion or other injury.

I've come to the conclusion that the Cowboys are never going to get close to the Super Bowl. You can tell they have talent, but the coaching is just dire. They need a decisive leader/disciplinarian, instead of a glorified coordinator/yes-man. They will win 8-10 games, maybe the division, but until they get a real coach they are going nowhere. Unfortunately, Jerry will not hire anyone with a spine, so I don't have a positive outlook.

Jerry Jones. The man that unceremoniously canned Tom Landry, the only coach in the franchise's history and a true class act, then fired his replacement weeks after he wins his second Super Bowl.

Did anyone see the Cowboys @ Vikings game tonight? Actual game wasn't anything spectacular, but the very last play, with 6 seconds left, Cowboys down by 3 on offense, was probably the most epic thing I've seen in the NFL (save maybe the Steelers Lineman that scored an 80yd touchdown).

Basically:

Romo passed it to somebody, who then pitched it backwards to someone else, who then threw it sideline to sideline to another guy, and this continued for quite a while, gaining a lot of yardage. lots of pitches in that play, the only reason it didn't continue was some guy got boxed in, tossed it backwards, hit the ground, and some Viking lineman jumped on it. he shouldn't have, I woulda loved to have seen them score with that play.

Official play-by-play entry:

(Shotgun) T.Romo pass short right to F.Jones to DAL 40 for 14 yards. Lateral to R.Williams to DAL 32 for -8 yards. Lateral to T.Romo to DAL 43 for 11 yards. T.Romo pass short right to M.Austin to DAL 40 for -3 yards. Lateral to J.Witten to DAL 34 for -6 yards. Lateral to D.Bryant to 50 for 16 yards. FUMBLES, RECOVERED by MIN-C.Greenway at DAL 39. C.Greenway to DAL 39 for no gain (T.Romo). PENALTY on DAL-T.Romo, Illegal Forward Pass, 0 yards, enforced at DAL 43.

Patriots won but they should have tried the 62 yarder at the end, would have been cooler.

Saints just destroyed the Panthers, 34-3. 6-3 now, not too shabby boys!

Saw the Colts@Eagles game too, Colts had a chance at the end to win, they easily could've. at the 50, 47 seconds left, 24-26 Eagles. Manning kept throwing bad passes, they shoulda just given it to the Halfback a few times to get up to maybe the 40, then get the field goal. didn't the Saints get like a 56 yard field goal last year? or somebody got a past-half field field goal last year at least. I think they coulda won if they were a little smarter.

Raiders gave it a good shot but it's obvious they are climbing rapidly. Probably will get to the Super Bowl next year and will actually win it all the year after that.

Now the only thing I care about since my raiders have blown their chances are all the Wrangler jeans commericals that Farve stars in. No Farv, we have evidence that you don't wear Wranglers all the time when you are chilling at home. Save that statement for the Croc's commercial.

Well, I still think Jerry Jones is the anti-Christ.

I was actually surprised by how well Garrett did. The test will come next year, after he runs the training camp. I'm guessing the team quit on Wade, and his firing gave them a wake up call. The fact that they needed a wake up call was the problem, and stems from the coaching and managerial style the team is under.

To those who doubt the power of Seattle's 12th man:

Did the Seahawks 12th Man Create a Seismic Tremor During Lynch’s TD Run? (http://lastangryfan.com/2011/01/did-the-seahawks-12th-man-create-a-measurable-seismic-tremor-during-lynchs-td-run/)

The Qwest field crowd is famous for the amount of noise they can generate during a football game, but can they cause a small, but measurable, seismic tremor?

Apparently they can.

During Marshawn Lynch’s 67-yard beast of a touchdown run, the crowd noise was so intense that it actually produced a small tremor that was picked up by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN), a facility which locates earthquakes in Washington and Oregon.
