This thread is about a feature of EB I have seen people discuss in passing but never much in depth. Mainly, the use of forts. Do you use them? Do you use them seasonally (winter when FM's aren't supposed to campaign)? Do you block key passes with them?

I was inspired by a recent battle in my Hai campaign. Personally I use forts very rarely and as the AI hardly ever uses them, they are usually nonexistant in my campaigns. However, in this particular campaign the AI has been using them often and oftentimes, rather cleverly. In previous campaigns if they did build one, they moved out the next turn. In this case, the AS had a fort blocking the pass from Mazaka to Karkiotherta meaning that I could not attack through the mountain pass easily. He also loaded it up with 20 units including one Hypaspistai and Toxotai Syriokoi. I needed to dislodge him or risk a large army behind my lines cutting off my supplies and so I used my main army to attack the fort.

It ended up being a closely contested battle, decided only when my general bravely attacked the Hypaspists covering one flank allowing my other infantry to get behind his phalangites. I wish the AI could do this more often. Currently the AS has another large fort on its border with the Saba and another smaller one blocking the road to the south west of Karkiotherta. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Damn, why are my pics always so big?

I used them to block off key passages in Vanilla.

I also used them to set up 'siege camps', a fair enough distance away from the city, in order to build up troops at a forward central area.

Now I'm wishing I hadn't uninstalled to reinstall....

:(

ui_0.pak file issues now, I swear I've dealt with it before, but I can't remember what I did..

Welcome to the .org Hawklore. I would head over the Bugs/Troublshooting subforum. They should be able to help you with any problems you might have.

I use them to:
- Represent Cities
- End the turn in a safe place (while in enemy territory)
- In my KH campaign I created a sort of limes in Ionia, leaving a gap and the AS was so kind to send all its armies there to get slaughter (while the towns developed) ^^
- Halt an invading army, or destroy it if I've enough troops, but not enough for an open battle

Let me try to remember from when I actually used to play EB:

I used forts to station my field armies wherever I wanted them to camp. These camps usually resided on the borders of my empire, so anyone crossing the border would get BUSTED. I just leave the fort with about 80 percent of the army and BUST THAT FOOL. And if any nation was foolish enough to attack my fort, I'd come out guns ablazin'. The reason I always fought on the field should be clear: I'm Armenian, I prefer the open field where my missiles and cavalry can BUST ENEMIES the way they deserve to be BUSTED. Okay.

Yo Robin, do you use Windows 7 or Windows XP? Search the windows xp or windows 7 resize powertool, it's a Microsoft freeware that resizes your pics to small size. Upload them and then link those. They will look nicer in forum.

used to place them on mountain passesgarrisoned with only a slinger and a levy spearman. gives you 3 turns extra to react to athreat. and with the slinger they have afair chance of killing some attackers on their own.

Huh, actually, I noticed the exact same situation during my most recent Hayasdan campaign. They built a fort in that pass, plopped down a fullstack, then just sat there doing nothing, even after I bought Mazaka.

Can't remember the exact composition, but I do remember the army contained a decent number of elites.

Forts are something miraculous that even one unit of pandadapoi can stop a full stack for nearly one year!

how to disable forts, ENTIRELY?
*. Because I highly doubt forts in RTW could be made permanent like Kingdoms... although made Forts have stone walls is impossible too in RTW (Permanent wooden forts? omg?)

The easiest solution :
open descr_sm_forts_ports_watchtowers.txt on data folder
find each line of -- fort_cost 500 --
just make 500 1.000.000 mnai :laugh4:
