Quick Question (QQ):

Makedon and Epeiros can recruit the Phalangitai Deuteroi, the European form of the levy phalangitai as seen throughout all the successor states. The other two types are the Machimoi Phalangitai (recruitable by the Ptolemies in Egypt) and the Pantadapoi Phalangitai (recruitable by the Seleukids and many others throughout Asia and Africa). The sad issue about their recruitment, though, is that a faction can only recruit one of these units, and not the two others. This is because of model limits.

However, in EB, the model limit has been shown to be bypassed many times in the system by the use of "mercenary" units. Is there a way to take advantage of this so that I might be able to recruit the Deuteroi AND the Machimoi phalangites in one campaign at the same time?

No you can't. Deuteroi, Machimoi and Pantodapoi use the same model with different skins, though with the merc attribute this model can be used a second time. The problem is, the merc version is already in use as the slave faction Pantodapoi. You could make this one recruitable for every faction but it's a Pantodapoi version and not Machimoi or Deuteroi like you want.

I, for one, fail to see how the Panto/Machi dichotomy really matters anyway. Pantos and Machis have all but Identical stats (Machi's have one lower armour and one higher morale compared with Pantos, IIRC) and both have the AP axes, so even if you could go into Egypt as, say, Saba and recruit both Pantos and Machis, there would be very little point in doing so. As for Deuts (which do not have the AP axes), I, for one, can see no reason why a player who has access to levy phalanxes with AP axes would want some that don't have them. The reverse, of course, is not true (many Makedon and Eperios players would love to have access to their Deuts' eastern counterparts, I'm sure), but other than that, there is really no other good reason to make two (or all three) types of levy phalanx avaliable to a given faction, as the only advantage it would have would be to extremely slightly improve the position of two already strong factions that don't need buffing.

I'd be too much work for too little return, IMO...

It's not about efficiency of having another levy phalanx unit, it's about roleplaying. If it was possible without sacrificing a unit, it would be as good a reason as any, in my opinion.

This is news to me, thanks!

Exactly.

Now the present issue is: can we make the machimoi recruitable also, even if it means sacrificing a unit that is barely used? (praetorians, for example)

That's possible but you need at least some modding experience or much time to read tutorials and figure out how to change the files. The first unit to sacrifice are this goidilic shock troops since they're not recruitable in the game anymore. You could also use BI.exe or Alex.exe since they have 10 more possible unit models IIRC.
I can't help you much with that, I read tutorials and experimented with the files but I never changed a model until now. Though I will probably try to sacrifice the goidil unit for an hellenic sword unit...

To make machimoi phalangitai recruitable you would need to delete every entry of the unit you want to sacrifice and then copy an paste a lot. Everything is already there you would just need to link it together to a new unit. Though that's a lot of work. I would prefer to make the slave pantodapoi phalangitai recruitable and rp them as machimoi, that would be easier.
