This will be the first of some future unit icons for patrician. By far, hands down the best building icons and functional as well as adding estetics to an already cool mod. Get them And let me know how you like them.

If you could spread the screenshots a bit though
it would be, nice as it takes 3 minuets to load

Take your time flip. The icons and buildings will be addons even before v1.3 comes out. Dont rush your project because i know how it is when you got the creative spirit going. I just enjoy creating units and building icons. Think you will like the ships and units coming up.

I am wondering what I need to know to get this mod working. I have downloaded the file and winzip will not decompress it, (tells me to re-download it which i did and it made no difference) so do i need something else to decompress it? And where can I download the latest file?
By the way i think this mod looks great, hopefully the book will be as good as its cover.

Well I've been playing for the Patrician for a while now and although I must say it is very impressive I have some qualms about the Roman units.
It would be more accurate to be only able to build velites initially, then the hastati should become available followed by the principes and then the triarii.
The velites should require a spearmaker, the hastati and principes a spearmaker and swordsmith, and the triarii should also have need a spearmaker and swordwmith (perhaps armourer too?)but they have no throwing spears and carry a hasta (pike) instead (armed more like a hoplite).
The velites were only young men being blooded in the ways of war, they are lightly armed and armoured and should not be efficient at melee fighting yet.
Only later should Marius' Legions come into being.
Also I was thinking that perhaps you should make Gaulish and German units really big so that they have less tactical control. Just a suggestion.
Anyway, brilliant job King David

Patricians Citizens of Rome
Patrician The Birth of Rome is not just about battles and conquest. Patrician is about Art, Creativity and learning to mod a great game. I will be uploading a set of icons that will blow your minds very soon for testing. I have always wanted to learn how to change those dreary dark and gray MTW icons to more colorful and artistic ones and after some help from my friends here at the org, I believe i have found a way to do it. I am not very good at explaining the technical aspects of moding so pleassss be patient and learn by doing and researching (Reading the Posts here at the org) trial and error. Those of you who are contributing to the Patrician mod, keep up the good work and by god, test your creations before submiting them. The Icons I will upload have been tested by me but I ask you guys to beta test them on your mods and let me know how it pans out.
Thank you all for your help and your interest in Patrician.

Could someone pull their thumb out and tell me which unit is which to begin with. eg. Is the velite a murabitin? are the hastatii billmen? are the triarii chivalraic seargents and what are the principes? I'm not going to figure it out by spending hour after hour 'trial and error' style. The changes I want to make are quite simple, and all i need to know is the original names of the units. Thank You.

the corresponding units can be found in the names txt file LOC folder. scroll down to where unit names are and you will find what units are changed to in patrician.

If anyone is interested, I got all the unit info, and made 3 catalog .txt files. One is which Game unit is what Patrician Unit. IE. Negro Spearmen is Legion, Longbowman is Sagitarii, etc. Then, I have 2 others. One is the list of what unit uses what Bif file, the other what units are in which Bif file folder. (same data on each, but organised differently for simplicty.. if trying to swap folders, you can see in one look what inits are in it, or if want to change a graphic, can see what bif a particular unit uses.
These lists do not have siege equipment on them, as all crewman are peasants by default.
If anyone wants em, lemme know, and I can send em out.
(The listings are all in the names file (for names) and unit prod file for the .BIF. I just pulled em out to so I didn't have to dig each time I needed to look one up.

AHH I dont believe it how could this have fallen soo low?
*BUMP*
Baron von Beer
03-10-2003, 06:36
Herodotus:
When you say you swapped names, do you mean the unit name (first column in the unit_prod file) or the BIF file name (48th data entry in unit prod file). If you change the name, you must change the name in the name.txt file as well. (and obvious swap all the stats throughout the file)
To change the animation, you must change the BIF used in column 48 (columns in Gnome editor... should be 48th data entry either way) You must also change the following, in the root of Total War\Textures\men: Rename Billmen_w to OrderFootSoldiers_W, and OrderFootSoldiers_W to Billmen. Then in the ActionsPage folder (in the same root, textures\men) Do the same name swapping, for Orderfootsoldiers and billmen. Then, in the same root, in the folder named "Items", in the Weapon 1 folder, take copy and paste the contents of the order foot soldiers folder into the billmen folder (located in Items\weapon 2). (drop it into a secondary location first, as you must cut and paste the contents of the billmen folder to the order foot folder as well. If you paste it right in, it will overwrite them beforehand.) I'm sure since you've been modding, you know, back up beforehand as well. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif By just changing the animation, it doesn't change the weapon animation, positioning, etc. Also they use seperate attack animations from the same Bif.. The files you swap will make it all work out.
As an aside to David and crew with the mod, I am just finnishing up a new Romanesc Archer unit I made. I am about to load it up and see how it looks (3rd time doing it, first 2 had.... issues.. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I am "making" a few other units too, for Patrician.. I decided to do 'em for myself, but will show you guys as well. If you would like to use them, you're more than welcome. (I wouldn't have made them without your mod to play with them!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif If not, no worries, as I set out doing them for myself anyways... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I'll post a screenshot tonight or tomorrow when I have them in the game.
Oh, forgot, you also (I think... I did, and it works, so I assume it is nescessary..) swap the unit's .txt file in the Textures\Men\Actionsdiddy page. Don't recall what this file calibrates... didn't change the settings afterall, just the animations..

To be more specific I am pretty sure it stuffs up when I change the units in Rome and the Papal States.

Moderator/admin: I tried linking a few screenshots here from my webspace (same as I linked the others from, they worked) and was told that I could not link from dynamic pages in the IMG adress. What praytell does that mean? AFAIK, my webspace is not dynamic, as it is on my cable ISPs system. (I know MY connection is dynamic.. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif )
(Disregard... apparently something foul was afoot at Charter.. it is working now. This has conspiracy written all over it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif )

Dont worry, if you read back you will find that David has stated that he would be on a long vacation (I think, cant remember and am too lazy to check my self... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif )
He will be back in a month or so, nothing to worry about...

Just got the finnishing touches to do on these guys. (Small touching up, and make the Sarissa a bit longer. Still seems a little short to me) I may add another shield for variety as well. There are also several helmets I can put on them (same without plume, and several open faced). I find the Spartan helmet to be intimidating, and just down right cool, so used it for now. There is also another "unit" version, but it's the same as the Bronze armoured one shown, minus the leather apron. (3 different "looks")
(In hindsight, when making these units, I didn't make that mental hurdle (read: Exorcise common sense) that the shield would cover up the torso, at least from the front. Thats why I have the shots without a shield. I could have dressed the torsos in clown costumes, and had the same end result. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

Hello Patricians I have not abandoned you, I am in the process of moving and its allot of work. No time for games at this point but I will resume when I get settled. Keep up the good work to those who are creating those awsome units. These units being created should be offered as addons to the mod. Please do not change the heart of the mod, being the campaing file and the other vital files that make this mod great. I am realy impressed at the response to this mod and hope that more creative things can be done to add to it. Thank you all for your interest in Patrician.

Bah Sorry for not responding on here... They aren't quite ready yet. As Time permits, I am finnishing them up.. (Pesky Real Life has been operating on extended hours the last few day... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
(Strangely, since starting these, I have become addicted to working on them.... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif At times, it is almost as much fun making the little guys as killing them IN the game. (some parts are quite tedious and make me want to pull my own arm off to beat over my head and make it all stop... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif )
One other thing for King David, if you could get in touch with me via e-mail, please do. pgrasham@charter.net
I have an idea I have been playing with, but would need your input to make it usable outside of my own installation. It will also make the decision of what to make next that much easier.
Same for others making units. If you could get in touch with me also, I can go over this possible plan with you, and get a game plan for how best to implement it. Several minds are always better than 1

First off I 'd like to say its great to play MTW again. King David you've certainly resurrected this game for me--and apparently others.
Your mod is very interesting and I'm impressed with all the different units I've seen posted on this thread. I have been playing Patrician mod 1.1 and have found very few problems. Someone mentioned how there are too many scribes and such, this is certainly true in my games as well. They flood the provinces and make positioning your stacks quite frustrating at times--but I suppose this is a minor problem. As far as the historical accuracy of the relative factions' power and influence. It should be noted that Rome came first to dominate the Italian peninsula THEN Sicily THEN Carthage THEN the north. Carthage is too dificult to get to initially in this mod, especially since the Roman navy is virtually impotent. I have found it much easier to absorb first the Germans and Gauls, THEN hit Carthage (I would also suggest another new unit for Carthage, the Nubian Light Cavalry--these were superb skirmishing cav alry that had a punch). Though I do love the Greek power at the end And I'm sincerely looking forward to implementing those superb looking Hoplites This I suppose is still relatively minor in the shceme of things. The mod, as I said, is very fun.
Now I have been playing Pat 1.1 because Pat 1.2 does not work for me. Yes, I unistall Pat 1.1 with the unistaller found at the ORG and do a competely new install of MTW afterwards with the 1.1 patch as well. (Incidently I have found that while the program mod Pat 1.1 is deleted the selection Patrician is still found on the selection screen--though the program is clearly the MTW version 1.1). Anyhow, after installing the Pat 1.2 found at FILE PLANET everything seems to run well (the game begins and all the option screens are working properly) but after I actually begin to load my specific game. It freezes during the initial load up screen. I select my faction and period (obviously "Patrician") and the loading bar freezes about 1/3 through and a prompt comes on the screen stating something to the effect that one of the units(S) was located in an inapropriate area (Something to that effect anyhow). I am not very familiar with the workings of programs and mods myself but I do get excited when I can change a name and have the game run. Additionally, I would never have posted this if i have not THOROUGHLY enjoyed playing the very rough PAT 1.1 mod. King David did a wonderful job on it and the idea itself is truly brilliant, so this is why I have asked these questions because I really want to play the latest version of the mod. Any suggestions and/or comments would be welcome and appreciated.

I suggest you download Patrician 1.2 from the fileplanet. Do not install Pat v1.2 over Pat v1.1. It is suggested that Patrician V1.2 be installed over the original MTW Patched version 1.1 of the game. Also sugested that you make a copy of your entire game before installing the mod into it. The Patrician V1.2 from the fileplanet and Respawn are quite stable when installed properly. I discovered that when the game crashes with the message you indicated it is because the Patrician Campaign file in campap and the unitprod11 file of the root directory do not match do to the relationship of the two in this mod. The two files must match for the mod to work. In short it sounds like your patrician v1.1 is still being used by you with the patrician v1.2 unitprod11. file and that will crash your game. I suspect you intalled the mod over v1.1 then chose the patrician v1.1 file in the campaign field. Hope that sheds some light.
Now I have been playing Pat 1.1 because Pat 1.2 does not work for me. Yes, I unistall Pat 1.1 with the unistaller found at the ORG and do a competely new install of MTW afterwards with the 1.1 patch as well.
If you uninstall Patrician V1.1 do it by unitnsalling the whole game folder then copy your original game folder (From your Backup) In its place and install Patv1.2 over it. Note that some windows programs like windows ME do not unitstall files and folders even after you uninstall them by the uninstall selection so make sure to open up your windows explorer and delete the moded pat v1.1 folder by hand (Highlight and delete.) Then copy your Total War backup in its place before installing the patv1.2 mod.
Patrician V1.2 corrects many of those previous problems with the Agent overspawn and the Patrician faction in rome getting in your way. I highly suggest for all Patricians to upgrade to Patrician V1.2. I did extensive testing on it and tweeking until i was satisfyed that it was stable and playable. Most of these problems of crashes are due to user errors in installation. Again I stress that you backup (copy) your whole game folder as a backup so you dont have to reinstall the darn game everytime you wanna play on line or try out a new mod.

King David:
I appreciate the quick response. It appears as though this was the problem:
[Note that some windows programs like windows ME do not unitstall files and folders even after you uninstall them by the uninstall selection]
After manually deleting the folders within "programs" and reinstalling MTW, 1.1 patch and mod 1.2, it ran like a charm http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif
The new units are very attractive as well as the icons and images (no swamping scribes either!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. If you are planning another version of this mod (1.3) and you should like some suggestions for additional historically representative units that would enrich an already superb mod, let me know (that is if you don't already have enough on your "to do" list-- http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif ). The Roman units in particular seem very nearly complete but there is certainly room for expansion for the other factions (for instance, I could give you impressions of particular units and their relative strengths, weaknesses, and availabilities).

This Patrician mod is amazing, I have only just found it and started playing it and it has made MTW into a fresh and new experience. King David you have done an great job with this. i would love to help out with the mod. But do you have enough people already? Also i have very little modding experience tho i am eager to get started. Any advice for how i should get started with modding?
Anyway keep up the great work

Maybe your right does this mean the mods on hold or is anyone still working on it?
hopefully King David is merely still busy moving,
trust me that is exhausting work,
if he's anything like me it will take him a few weeks to regain the motivation, i'll email him later this week and ask for his current status
:-)
cheers,

I´m waiting for the Viking Invasion to resume the mods and i think that king David too.
