I've never been comfortable that I was getting the bonuses from buildings (other than armourer & metalsmith). As an experiment I changed the Mil Academy bonus from "UPGRADE_DISCIPLINE(1)" to "UPGRADE_VALOUR(2)". I am using the patch. I rebooted and started a new game on High as Byz. I quickly built a Mil Academy and when I built my first unit it came out with ZERO valour. Just for giggles I retrained it the next turn-- still no valour.

At least in this case, the results (or lack thereof) are visible. But what about all the morale bonuses?? How can you check to see if a unit built in a province with a church, cathedral, etc., is REALLY getting that bonus. Guess you can wait until you get into a battle, but then it's impacted by the general and only some of the units are shown using the F1 screen.

Or is there something really simple going on that I am missing completely? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

C'mon all you modding geniuses-- a little help please http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

That's what I'm afraid of. Being of a naturally suspicious nature, I am now concerned that I've spent all this money and time building stuff to get these marvelous bonuses-- which may or may not be working as advertised. I don't know how you'd check discipline. But the morale bonuses do work. Just build the same unit type in one province without morale-boosting buildings and another one with. Then go into battle and you'll see in the F1 screen that their morale values are different even though their valors are equivalent.

Yep, you're right-- the morale bonuses work as advertised.

But I found some interesting wrinkles with valour. It appears that if you want to mod a bldg to increase valour, there are two conditions:

1) The bldg MUST be a TROOP_PRODUCER

2) The valour upgrade will ONLY apply to units that REQUIRE that bldg.

I know that makes sense when you think about the bldgs that normally give valour bonuses (Master Horse, Spear, etc.), but I was intrigued by Wes's mod where he added a valour bonus to the Military Academy-- which I tried to do in my personal mod. But it would only work if I changed it from a NON_PRODUCER to a TROOP_PRODUCER, and then only gave the bonus to JHI (the only unit requiring a Mil Acad).

Next I changed the bonus for a Ribat from morale to valour--it worked, but only for Hashishin (again, only unit requiring a Ribat). Didn't check impact on Jihad-- hmmmm, I'll have to look at that.

For modding purposes, I was looking at having the Military Academy give a valour bonus to any unit constructed in the province but that does not seem to be possible.

I haven't done enough testing last night, but you are right on that. I have to try some other ways to see what happen.

As for now, there are a few things about valour bonus:

- Unlike other bonus which would be applied to all units trained in the province, valour bonus is only given to those trained from the building. All units that require level 3 building or lower would get the bonus if trained from the level 4 building (Master level). I have not tried with buildings that have only one level.

- Unit that require more than one building would not get the valour bonus properly, usually don't get any valour bonus. I haven't completely tested all building combinations.

- One building can not give more than 1 kind of bonus. For example: master level of swordsmith can not give +1 valour and +1 weapon at the same time.

- The bonus given by the higher level will overwrite the lower level. For example: swordsmith3 give + 1 valour, swordsmith4 give +1 weapon. Unit train from swordsmith3 will get +1 valour (if it require swordsmith2 or lower). The same unit trained from swordsmith4 will get +1 weapon without the valour bonus even if it only require swordsmith2.

- One unit can not have more than 1 advantage province.

I will need to do some more testing tonight.

Swordsman is correct.
I just made a mod where i wanted a fortress to add (+1)valour to the units produce there.
In order to acomplish this i had to add castle to all the unit's building requirments. To go even farther i made sure that each unit had an apropriate castle size (example => You need a Citadel to build Chivalric Knights)

Just to correct myself.

Not actually.

If the building requirement combination has a non_producer, units don't seem to get the valour bonus properly.

I'm also having problem with units that require ROYAL_COURT. When I use ROYAL_COURT2 or higher, I usually don't get the option to train the unit. Also, unit that require the royal court can't get the valour bonus from any of the building. I think I broke the game somehow.

Other combinations of all troops_producer buildings do give proper valour bonus.
