View Full Version : Changing the stats for the Carthage Sacred Band
Hi guys,
I remember reading a thread a while back now about some peeps not being totally happy with the stats of the Sacred Band so I was just wondering how to change them to be more acceptable... If someone could post how to do it and what stats need altering I'd be very great full as I with to start a Carthage Campaign... Also is changing unit stats save game compatible? As I could start my new campaign as it will obvious be a few years till I can actually recruit the Sacred Band.
Thanks in advance guys :-)

If you're just making changes to the stats in the export_descr_unit.txt, you can do it at any time, it doesn't affect anything fundamental. Bear in mind you need to change the one in EB\sp game edu backup, not the one in EB\Data. Also bear in mind you should probably use Notepad++ or the like to edit the file, EDU can get buggy if you use regular Windows Notepad to edit it.

Well their morale (18!!) fits their price but otherwise their stats are a little weak for top of the line elite units. They simply don't stand up the Hellenistic elites like Basilikon Agema, Peltastai Makedonikai or Hypaspistai, forget about TAB's. That said, on their own roster, the Elite Liby Phonecians are far superior especially against armored foes. After your reforms, the Iberian Assaults are also better especially considering the larger unit size. I suppose their morale means they will almost never break but they are simply not that great at killing anything but cavalry and light infantry.
You can look at this from one of two ways. I leave them as is, an antiquated hoplite-model unit that is elite, but will do poorly against elites of other nations except perhaps the KH. They more or less match Spartan and Epilektoi Hoplitai. However, they will falter against sword armed or especially ap elites. If you want to use them, do so knowing that they are no longer the elite fighting force of Carthage and more or less an African version of the Praetorians. I did give them revenge in Sicily, but they returned to Carthage and will remain there as bodyguards of the Shophet.
On the other hand, you can decided to mod them so that they fit their price. I say giving them an ap sword and maybe lowering its attack by 1 or 2 should do that just fine. Its not too much of a stretch from the model and it appears that in EBII they will be equipped with either a kopis or falcata.
Sorry to be such a noob but could some one post how I would mod there stats... Thanks guys :-)

Look in EB\sp game edu backup for export_descr_unit.txt. Open the file (preferably with Notepad++, not Windows Notepad).
Search for "sacred band" - I think that will find them. Alternatively search "Carthaginian" to get to their section in the file. Then scroll down until you find their entry.
Then you've got the various factors in front of you, not sure what you want to change so can't help there.

Go into your EB folder and look for export_descr_unit.txt folder. There is one in your sp edu backup folder as well as the one in your general eb folder. If I mod anything, I always do it in both, but apparently as long as you just do it in the backup folder it will work. The units are listed according to their native names so it may take a few minutes to figure out which entry equates which unit. Sometimes it helps to look at model names. It is a large folder but units are listed by their "culture" alphabetically so Carthaginian units are near the top. As far as what the numbers/words mean in each entry, at the very top of the document there is a key which should help you figure it out. Make your desired changes, save, and load up EB. If their stats are different, congragulations, you are a modder!

Incidentally if you want to keep the stat changes in line with the overall statting scheme, replacing a xiphos with a kopis/falcata makes for an one-point drop in the attack value and lethality drop to 0.11...
On a different note, this topic - hardly the first time this issue comes up when it comes to elite units - rather makes me suspect the AP ability is a wee bit too powerful overall.

I´m curious: does the AI recognize the AP bonus given to a unit? I wonder, because after i´ve reduced the soldiers number in a Pedites Ordinary unit to 30 on default, Romans still love to crank them out as soon as they have built the needed barrack tier in their cities. Because stats wise they are even inferior to Camilian Princeps. On the other hand, the halved Triari unit now appears in adequat numbers in their armies. Perhaps reducing PO to 20 units would stop that spam....
