View Full Version : What kind of riding mower are you using right now.... yes RIGHT NOW!!!
I'm getting ready to close on a house that sits on some acreage, and I'm guessing it would take about 3 hours to mow it all with my walk-behind Honda. So I'm in the market for a riding mower/lawn tractor. I'm guessing I need to mow around 2.5+ acres, it would be nice if I could also have a tow-behind cart and maybe a small plow for the driveway. Any recommendations or tales of warning?

Bah ride on mowers how urban, real men use as big a conditioner mower as humanely possible along with as big a tractor as you can get in the farmyard

Heh, I hadn't seen King of the Hill in years till they started showing it on Channel 4 recently.
My garden is much too small for such fancy contraptions, you could cut it with scissors in not too long.

Is it all landscaped? If so, a John Deere X300 with a 42 inch mulching deck should do nicely. If you have a lot of leaves you might want to opt for the rear discharge deck with the bagger instead. I've had the 42 inch mulch deck with a ultility cart for two years now and am happy with it. Paid around $3,000. I mow 2.3 acres myself.
The front yard is mainly wooded, with a small section of grass at the front of the house. The back yard is an big open grass area, surrounded by trees, with a couple of garden beds here and there. Most of the grass is not under tree cover, but a fair amount of leaves will blow onto the yard when they start to drop. For spring/summer mowing, I'm guessing a mulching deck will be the thing, for the fall I can either bag it, or blow the leaves to the edges and run it through the chipper/shredder. The beds could use the leaf mulch anyway.
That X300 looks nice, plenty of attachment options. Does it come with a cup-holder for my beer?

It should also come with a tv mount in case the game happens to be on.

My dad got a Honda. It had problems, and they stopped making riding mowers after that.
So...don't get a used Honda. I get a general sort of good vibe from John Deere, though.

That it does. (http://www.deere.com/en_US/ProductCatalog/HO/servlet/com.deere.u90785.cce.productcatalog.view.servlets.ProdCatProduct?pNbr=SKU21846&tM=HO&link=enav) I get about 4 laps per beer with mine.

Kubota (http://www.kubota.com/) makes excellent compact tractors for the type of work you'll be doing. My father owns three of varying sizes to maintain a piece of land we have in the country and loves them - Japanese reliability and efficiency . He is of the opinion that Deeres are overpriced and the company has bad customer service, but I wouldn't know.

The best tractor you can buy is a Deutz Fahr

Bah! Real men use nail clippers!
So the little woman suggests I save money and get a Cub Cadet mower we walk by at the Tractor Supply. I was correct to laugh in her face, right?
