Depends how close you are to him/her. If you are distant, its pretty weird, and screams "Im sucking up to you."

I gave both my professors this summer an apple on day 1. I was referred to as that joker karinen after that... I dont think they realized that it was a wax apple...

No that's crossing boundaries, don't do it. Used to work with a guy who kept sucking up, so we started giving gifts in his name. Cafetaria-cake with a note 'for my highly appreciated boss'. Boss figured out it was me pretty fast but untill he did the look on his face was priceless
