Ok now this is a for real topic, since I'm going to be needing plenty of help in the coming month or two in which I play this game. Currently I am nearly out of ammo for my Rifles, and I have an IL85 and an AK742U. I did the Hit with Sultan's guys, and I think Noah sent me into an anomaly as an a-hole prank.
I'm wondering where I should go next? I'm thinking the Burnt Farmstead.
Also how do I get artifacts?

There are a bunch of quests you can obtain from the start by talking to various people in the ship. Those are generally pretty good for starting cash. If you're low on ammo, go talk to the merchant (I forget his name) on the second floor of the ship. He should have a decent selection of basic ammo. In the beginning of the game, ammo scarcity is a common problem. I recommend keeping one weapon for each ammo type at the start, and swap them out when you get low. Stash the weapons and ammo you're not currently using in your chest in the ship, so that they don't take up weight. Also, to conserve ammo, don't use full auto fire with any weapon. Use the firing mode toggle to switch to single-fire or two- or three-round burst modes, depending on what options the weapons offer. Best to also rely mainly on pistols at the start, for this reason. Only whip out the automatic weapons when you need to take down tough mutants or a whole bunch of targets quickly.
Also how do I get artifacts?
First, you need a detector. Pull it out and walk around in the area where the artifacts are. The detector will give you a signal that will tell you if you're getting closer or farther away from the artifact. The better the detector, the easier it will be to find the artifact. When you get close enough to an artifact, it will appear in front of you (until then it is invisible). To avoid anomalies while doing all this, pull out the 'bolt' weapon and keep throwing them in front of you as you move. If it hits something, don't move there. If it doesn't hit anything, you can walk forward safely.

The merchant, is his name...um....is he the guy that you order weapons from?
also will i have to worry about mutants while looking for artifacts? cuz I really dont wanna be overly cautious only to be mugged by a few dogs and killed while searching.

Owl.

oh. ok i know that guy ill be sure to check him out.
also, whats the deal with this Noah guy? every time i try to open the door he tries to shoot me. Up until now he talked to me, but now he won't. Is it cuz I got the 3rd helicopter data?
also I got some fire artifact from the Circus (yay!), is it worth anything? to whom?
On ammo, carry 3 guns: an automatic, a shotgun and a pistol. Use the automatic on single-shot or burst fire against human enemies. Use the shotgun (carry about 75 buckshot rounds) for mutants. Use the pistol (around 100 rounds) if you run out of ammo for your main weapons.

If you listen to what he says when he talks to you you'll figure out that he's absolutely insane. He always trys to shoot you when you open the door, just dodge the shot the go in and talk to him after and say you are a stalker. He won't talk? You may have pressed the wrong dialogue option and offended him, his important in one future mission, so if you can't talk to him any-more you may want to restart.

Beard. Guy downstairs who sells food, check his dialogue for what artifact quests he has, don't take them unless you have the artifact he wants in your possession though.
You can also sell artifacts to Owl or other merchants throughout the game, but you'll get a lot more money by selling them to Beard through his 'quest' options.
Easy on the ammo comes recommended, you really want to avoid a fight if you can, being a bit sneaky works fairly weil

alright so right now, on my way to the Iron Forest for the next helicopter, I took a quest to get a stash of stuff in a car at the bottom of some pit. however, I fell in and was almost immediately attacked by Snorks. luckily I have a shotgun, but at this point after killing 3 (4?) Snorks, I'm down to 9 shells from 30-something. and I cannot find a way out of this place.
by the time I get help I might have navigated out by myself, but if not help is greatly appreciated.
Also: just wanted to share, I know this game is really scaring the crap outta me because when I tried to make a save in the pit I called it "oh ****", and it came back saying I already had that name for a save :P. ugh this is creepy. I think it's more the thought of fighting the mutants than actually fighting them (though these snorks in close quarters are scaring me ****less), because I rarely take damage from the dogs or pig things.
EDIT: I also need 3 Veles detectors. where can I find these? and is the Sawmill dificult to fight through or should I be good? I do have an MP5, an L86, and a AK74U, as well as a Desert Eagle, and a good amount of ammo for each (I think around 4 clips for the 1st 2, 6 for the AK and 150 rounds for the pistol), would this be a good place to loot for armor/weapons?
The Veles detectors you'll find in Jupiter, so don't worry about them at the moment.
The Sawmill is a good place to explore, yes, filled with zombified stalkers (they carry guns, but aren't very smart).

Alright, so I went to the Sawmill, started sniping with my L86. After moving up, I saw the AN94 (favorite gun in Bad Company 2, and I'm lovin it here too), and started owning with it. however i failed to see a couple zombies and I nearly died, however I was saved by a group of 3 stalkers coming up behind me on a bridge. got some tools, lots of ammo (360 5.54 rounds now), a shotgun, and a few other goodies before heading over to the swamp to get an artifact and find the helicopter.
got back to skadovsk, sold the artifact, basically gave all the money back on repairs and mods for my guns, and now I think I'll fo the sneaking into the merc camp quest for Owl. hoping its not too difficult, but if it is I have my trusty AN94!
also where can I find scopes? like for my AN94?

The Merc base can be a bit of a challenge on the harder difficulties, a scope is probably a good investment. You can find them in certain stashes that litter the world or you may be able to buy one off Owl, he sometimes has the one with the targeting system.

ownage! I attacked the Mercs last night and it was so frickin cool. waited til around 1am, and came in from the south with my MP5 silenced. Saw a guy on a catwalk, but didnt want to take the shot just yet. so i low-crawled around on this little embankment til I was in position to get behind him. Once in position, I waited for him to turn, walked up to him, and shot him in the face (wonder if a knife woulda worked?). Somehow the guards are as telekinetic as the ones in TES4:Oblivion, so they realized that I was there, but couldnt find me. after killing another one, I saw several of them coming around the corner outside towards me, went around the back of the building, and sprayed them from behind. took up my 1st position, took out 4 guys with my now-scoped AN94, and remembering that I have a freakin shotgun (pump action not double barrel), took it out and rushed into the building. at this point there were only like 6 left, and 1-shot kills on most but the exoskeleton guy who took a few more. emission, grab lots of ammo, PDA's, data, and a couple guns off the exoskeleton guys, and bailed outta there back to skadovsk.
was pretty freakin awesome, despite the numerous failed attempts prior to that :P
now I need to go to....hmm. well Owl wont give me any more missions, I dont have a good enough detector to go artifact hunting all the time, and i dont have the money to order anything. should I maybe just go to Yanov?
Don't fret about going to Yanov, you can go back and forth between the areas easily, it'll just cost you a bit of cash. I think you can get the costs down to $1000 per trip if you do a mission for the tracker guy or find a map or something.

yah i got it down to $1000, but i want to save up money to buy the exoskeleton (I currently have like 15,000) or at least the combat suit. I'm planning on hitting up either the Scar anomaly or the tree anomaly. whats at the tree? just gravity or something or is there no bad stuff?

IIRC, tree has a maze of anomalies under it, but nothing on the actual tree itself. I think there's one artifact under the tree and one on top that you have to do some acrobatics to get to. Not too difficult for either.
For the exoskeleton, be aware that you CANNOT run in it until you upgrade it with upgrades that require the calibration tools. You will not get the calibration tools for a long time, so if you like running, I recommend that you save your money for a bit and buy it later.
[edit]If you really want to invest in a good piece of equipment from Nimble early-on, I recommend asking him for a Sniper weapon. He sells three possible sniper rifles (random as to which you get), but for the Sniper rifle all three are very good. Tide may well be the best of them as it useful for both sniping and close combat, and takes ammo which is a bit easier to purchase than the other two. Lynx might be the best pure sniper weapon, but cannot really help you up close.

well i took 2 artifact missions from Beard (for a total of 36000 bucks!), but both I had to kill STALKERS who took it first. now he has no more missions. ? I guess I wouldnt really be getting many anyway since I can't find any of them (too many places to search without a marker IMHO), but can I still sell the ones I do get to him? are there any other artifact mission people?
BTW I got the combat armor instead, since he told me he had no more missions (1 more and I coulda had the exoskeleton...) anyway, while I detest the weight, it offers significantly more protection than the sunrise suit i previously had (i'm a military guy, why didnt they send me off with military-grade gear in the first place? damn ukranian military), which is nice either way.
I got the 3 veles detectors from the guys i killed for the artifacts, so I'm off to Yanov now to give it to the scientists and get my svarog. BTW can I just trek it back to Zaton from Jupiter? or do I have to use the guides every time?

Beard is the only artifact mission guy, but he never runs out of missions as far as I am aware. I think they will reappear after some time passes. Any merchant will buy your artifacts, including random stalkers out in the field. They don't pay as much as Beard's missions, but it's still far better money than from selling old gear and such. Just make sure you don't sell off artifacts you might actually use!

You have to use the guides every time, but they're in convenient locations.

Ownage! I accepted the "pay off debts" mission at Yanov and went to the Bandit camp. I decided I was gonna pocket the money rather than pay this **** 2000 of my own bucks. so, I killed him and his bodyguards with my MP5 silenced, grabbed his shotgun, and went to work. basically I just camped in his room the whole tiem and they just kept coming; the Eliminator is a beast as far as I can see. took my pistol and mopped up the last who refused to come in, grabbed some ammo (had to drop some things so I could move, wish there woulda been a STALKER patrol going by) and went on my merry way to sell it at Yanov.
Then I headed up to the bandit camp to free the hostage, and waited until 1AM (ugh that took FOREVER, I got there around 10PM) for the backup. So far I've been unsuccessful. One try I got really far, but some douche behind a crate popped out and sprayed me. killed him, but I still died.
(had to drop some things so I could move, wish there woulda been a STALKER patrol going by)
Weight is always a major issue for me. For this reason I always drop as much stuff as I can in the stash boxes before going out. You'd be surprised how much your extra first aid kits and food weighs... take only what you need, nothing extra. Also, it's a good idea to carry the drug that increases your carry weight temporarily. You can use a few of those on your way back to let you carry those extra bits of loot. The weight increasing artifacts are also a priority IMHO.

I find that as well! However, I've noticed that Medkits take up 1kg rather than .1 as is advertized. maybe a glitch, idk. anyway where would I find the weight helping artifacts, and any artifacts to counteract the radiation?

Just keep searching the anomalies. Anomalies will actually respawn with new artifacts after a while, so go back and check them every once in a while. Keep searching and eventually you'll get the radiation reduction artifacts, along with the weight increase artifacts. Until you get the rad reduction ones, you pretty much can't use any of the artifacts. In Jupiter there's a quest line for the Scientists that has you placing sensors in a whole bunch of anomolies. Once you've done that, you can see if new artifacts have spawned in the anomolies just by looking at your PDA map, which is nice.
Be aware that the artifacts you find tend to get more powerful the deeper you go into the zone. You'll find more powerful artifacts in Jupiter than in Zaton, and more powerful artifacts in Pripyat than in Jupiter.

hey the goldfish is like really powerful right? Beard just gave me a mission to find it, how do i find it? theres no marker or anything. I also cant steal it becuase no matter how much I sleep, it just fails or doesnt get updated, so I have to re-load and actually find it. Previously both of his quests have been the Eye artifact, and both have been at Circus Anomaly. Could it be there? or no since thats a fire place?
As far as I am aware, there's no specific spot to get artifacts. You just get them by the luck of the draw. I find the best way to deal with Beard's quests is to simply amass a large number of artifacts and check in with him every once in a while. Only take quests for artifacts you already have and then sell them to him immediately. If you take quests for artifacts you don't have, you'll probably run out of time on the quest before you find them.

alright, I'll do that from now on. If I do find a goldfish though, I'm certainly keeping it to myself. that extra 12 kilos is great, that means I can carry back at least 3 or 4 guns from every raid to sell! rather than my current situation where at best I might be able to grab a gun. Thanks!
Also under the burnt farmstead, are the anomalies difficult to get past?I've heard there may be a goldfish in there, as well as a good radiation-removing artifact.

oh wow thats pretty stupid.
I found the jellyfish under the burnt farmstead.....and it will not let me grab it. yup, i cannot grab it. i should be able to, heres a screenshot of how close I am:
https://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo360/TheSpartanIII/ss_jonathan_01-20-11_18-08-19_zaton.jpg
and even jumping to right next to it refuses to give it to me. sigh.
Yeah, I had the same problem with that one, it's a bug. I can't remember if I ever found a way to get it or not. Do a google search, maybe someone's found a way to grab it.

I tried shooting it, that did it. it took a while though.
now I have like 75000 bucks, and hopefully more if I can get Beard to give missions for my other artifacts.
if I still have a significant amount when I get to Pripyat and get the Calibration tools, I'll buy the exoskeleton and get the running upgrade.
Prussian to the Iron

Just as an update, Cardan has all the tools now, my exoskeleton is tricked out (sprint upgrade included, as well as the ability to carry 90 kilos of stuff), got some nice high-end guns (SVD, G36, F2000, SVU, Elliminator) and its been pretty cool.
I just cleared out the building above X8, which was pretty cool but an ammo drainer for sure. I also just went into X8 and grabbed a couple documents, but got really lost and kept getting hit by randomness. So I watched a walkthrough of it and now I have an idea of where to go and why my stuff kept getting ripped from my hands/stuff got thrown at me.
