Just curious whether the various mods out there have ruined anyone else's experience of playing vanilla. I haven't played vanilla since some time in early 2008, and to be honest I don't miss it at all. The various anachronisms and license taken with history just annoy me too much to bother. Two turns a year is pretty sucky, too.

I do every once in a while until I remember that squalor penalties make huge empires almost unmanageable.

After playing EB you'll start asking yourself: How could I've played this?! XD

Except the fact, that RTW was my first TW game, so i had a lot of fun as a newbie, i don´t, well i can´t actually, play it anymore.
One thing i still miss is this, well, call it athmosphere, when the Senate used to "guide" your expansions, a feeling, that you are NOT the SPQR as a whole, but only one of many, i don´t know... maybe it the lack of disciplin, or maybe i sometimes like to do a quest.
And the other thing i sometimes really hate in EB is this "know down" thing due to lower lethality of the units in general - zooming in i sometimes have to watch a guy beeing hit at least 5 times, going down, getting up, and fighting again - THAT´s annoying, but well^^

No for me. I played two campaigns with vanilla, and one with BI. It was a nice introduction for me into the RTW series, but I could never go back to it after playing several different mods.

War pigs for the win! :laugh4:

I don't play the campaign but my friend and I often fire up vanilla multiplayer for matches. In fact we had one earlier today in which I delivered him a whipping.

Vanilla multi is fine just for fun but only EB for campaign.

Never played RTW after EB, although I hopped to ETW - Special Forces Edition now.

Thought it was time for a different time period and still had to try it out.

@BraveBraveSirRobin
I really have to get used to the morale of vanilla when I play it, troops rout very fast there.

if you're a modder you'll end up using vanilla as your "sandbox", like it or not, you must play it for testing something or somewhat...

Funny you mention that since the first time we went back to playing, our lines clashed and after five seconds or so my mid tier infantry were on the run. Annoying to say the least. Now that I'm used to it though its a lot more fun. Even won a battle the other day as Numidia fighting uphill against post-Marian Romans on equal money. EB has really helped me with the tactical aspect.

I agree with you and I would like to add that anyone who will play EBII will wonder: How could I've played anything else.........

I never ever play vanilla, first off, the campaign is bad, and because multi is often filled with... ... haters...

The best way to enjoy Vanilla online battles is to have so much money that all of the players units are fully upgraded and therefore do all the units fight longer like in Europa barbarorum (more morale and more fortitude).

It does not matter that the units in vanilla are not as cool like in EB, for most of the heavy infantry, cavalry, and missile units work in a similar way even for a different appearance.

Better to have an imperfect game (Vanilla) where there is lot of challenging players than a perfect game (EB) with no players online.

It is very bad when players use upgrades in online battles (about 10-15 k) and some 4 fully upgraded units destroy 20 normal units. And the CWB rules with their 2 Horse archer max does not favour the Nomad factions, but it is mostly the Rome and Hellenic factions which are decently balanced.

Hahahah

First off, hige money is infinitely just for fun with friends or noobish play. This is agreed on by almost everybody.

Secons, Rome and the Hellenics are very weak. Infact, every faction besides egypt has a counter for it. THere are even seperate tiers for factions.

Third, You say that CWB makes nomads under powered, WRONG. Abosoutely wrong. It is due to CWB rules that they are so strong.Scythia and Partha are one of the best factions ever. Both only defeated by the chariot users like Egypt.

Dont say shit when you dont know what youre talking about.

At the guy who said about the haters, Best thing to do is ignore them. Or better, beat them and hate them back :D

I think it is best that either are all units upgraded or none at all (for then it is equal for all). I dont care about the high money but if you try to host a game which bans upgrades then none player will come at all. It is mostly the upgrades thing which I hate but high money counters it.

Rome is best of the mobile infantry factions, while other players mostly use Seleucids, Egypt, Carthage, Macedon. I Know that Parthia, Armenia, and Scythia are good factions but do people honestly expect them to be historical with only 2 horse archers max?

I dont understand what this hater thing has to do about the previous discussion, but I think that you are ascribing to me your own delusions. Never forget 'Peace and good will toward all men'

Never forget 'Peace and good will toward all men'

Or "If you can't say it politely, don't say it at all". That applies to everyone here.

The last part was not in response to you, the thing about upgrades is, its not magic, attack improves attack(duh), defence imrpoves ARMOUR, not defence skill, armour helps agaonst arrows, which is why it is so powerful. If the opponent can buy upgrades so can you. The game is 7 years old, all of this stuff is proven, the CWB is there for a reason. If you get an all horse archer army, no one will either play against them, because they cant win, or they wont play as them, because no one will pay as them. The advantage of HA in CWB is that they do not count as archers. Take scythia, you can have 8 archers since scythia has 2 archer unit, get 2 HA and youre skirmishing force gets pretty unbeatable. If more were allowed, the game would become much less balanced. So please. Do not dispute

You won't be disappointed. I finished my first campaign in RTW back when it came out, and I'm glad I did. Won the civil war as the Julii, it was really fun.

RTW Vanilla has a great atmosphere, as someone already said. I don't know if it's just nostalgia, but it just feels very good and relaxing to play it.

I tried playing again as the Julii recently, on VH/VH, but got disappointed by the german phalanxes. I had some fun for a while.
