View Full Version : [Army Composition] What might a Galatian warband look like?

If my Palmyra game doesn't really go anywhere, I might try an alternative "extended migration" with the Casse in Galatia. I tried the Arverni as Galatia in a true migration once, didn't work too well. It's too poor on its own to allow you to do anything. With my Palmyra game, I've retained my starting province and taken one or two others, but don't assist the isolated kingdom militarily.

So the same here, I'd keep the British Isles, but focus all my attention on Galatia.

I want to use as many of the recruitable units as possible (Iaosatae, Sotaroas, Gaeroas, Botroas, Kluddolon, Keltohellenikoi, Leuce Epos) and minimise my use of mercenaries to pad things out. As usual no more than 14-15 units in a stack.

I'm figuring something like one each of Iaosatae and Sotaroas as my missile complement. A couple each of Gaeroas and Kluddolon. One or two Keltohellenikoi and Botroas. Two Leuce Epos and two mercenary horse (one less if I use a Hellenistic Mercenary General). Then two other merc units (no Tindanotae - too unbalancing).

How does that sound? How might I deploy them against phalanx-heavy Seleukids and mixed-unit Pontos (and in my game, Pergamon)? I'm conscious there's not a lot of armour there, how can I deal with better-equipped foes?

I think you'll have to keep your missile units at both wings, with the swift cavarly right behind them, while all of your infantry is in a single line...
Soon as the phalanxes approach hold the line, while your missiles deal the most damage possible to the cavalry...
In the mean time start some sort of encirclement with your cavalry, trying to cut the enemy general's head...
If you don't want to commit your infantry in a charge, you can "play" with the phalanx's slow speed, performing some sort of Thessalian Feint...

Can you use all the galatian units as the Casse?

Can you use all the galatian units as the Casse?

Only the merc units, unfortunately. Need to be Pontos or AS (or Romans or Ptolemies) to get the others.

I'm currently playing the arverni as galatians... it's a lot of fun but I think soon I'll start to be outclassed by hellenic infantry and cavalry... anyone knows how can I implement the elite galatian units in arverni's roster? cause I gave it a try but EB AoR system its really difficult to modify to a noob of moding like me...

The Galatian heavy spearmen use the same model as the Solduros and Arverni Nobles. What means you won't be able to use them without disabling Solduros or with more modding you could change the Arverni Nobles into the Galatian heavys, who're actually have nearly the same stats.
So, what do you want to do?

Nerva

Still don't know maybe just enable the arverni nobles in galatia and RP as if they were galatian nobles... with the cavalry I think it's the same problem as breheitm(?) use the same model as the galatian lavotuxri.
thanks for the information... I'll take a look again at those hidden resources...

THANKS! I'll give it a try later... so I'm supoussed to change the arjos needed resources to the ones in galatia? and what about the lavotuxri I already enabled them in the EDU for the arverni but still don't know how to activate their recruitment in the EDB... some help with that will be thanked...

Search in the EDB for them, copy the lines and paste them into the recruitment lines of your factional MIC and change the "requires faction" from whatever it is (carthage or romans_julii or something) to scythia. I don't have EB on this computer so I can't tell you the exact name of the celtic factional MICs, just look for one that requires britons, gauls and scythia. If you don't have modded the EDB to be able to build the level 5 MIC (either enabled it directly of through enabling the gov type I) you should paste it into the level 4 MIC.
Without further modding your lavotuxri will look like the Arverni Brihentin and when used with regular Brihentin on your side in a battle the game will crash IIRC because of a model-conflict.
For the galatian heavys you need other changes or they will look like Solduros. Just overwrite the Arveni nobles stats with that of the galatians (except for the merc-attribute since that defines their skin) and then change the resources of the arverni nobles in the EDB from Arvernotorg to Galatia.
If you want the exact Galatian-skins you need to edit the export_model_battle. That would be easy but the Skins don't differ much aside from the face and shield (and arverni nobles look cooler anyway).
Oh and never forget to make backups.

and after that change you need to restart your campaign also if you can figure it out put the top level of mines in ankyra from the start or it will be an unplayable campaign for you economically (or you´ll have to rush it wich means destroying the pontus and crippling the seulekids from the start)

Why rush to destroy Pontos and AS when there are a lot of rich, rebel-held territories to the west?

the top mine in ankyra can´t even pay for the upkeep of a 1/4 decent stack so if anyone wants to play as galatians they have to figure it out some nice money exploits just to survive (another advice is start with a stone wall in ankyra the celtik blades are deadly on walls) historically the gallatians got it by extorting pergamon and ankyra and pontus but in terms of gameplay if you waste your armies on pergamon and nikaia (and remember atacking nikaia = instant war with the pontians) you won´t have enough to develop their mines and sustain your army when the arche seulekeia or the pontians come

No, you don't.
Enabling the bigger mines for the Arverni needs some more work IIRC. Changing the building_text-file so you have a description for the mines, change the EDB so you can build it (that's the easiest part) and maybe even adding the pictures to the barbarian culture folder so they don't look like the vanilla barracks.
But playing Galatians shouldn't be much harder then playing Pontos. I recommend some cheating in the beginning (since you need to move your armies and FMs there you will need to cheat anyway) if you want to roleplay. If not, the starting armies of the Arverni should really be enough to take some settlements.

If you're using Force Diplomacy, one war isn't total, endless war until one side is dead. Once you've ridden out Pontos' attacks and destroyed their armies, they'll move on elsewhere. Pergamon and Nikaia are hugely wealthy, take those and you're sorted economically.

Typical fullstack Ptolemaioi Galatian army:
- 1x Vollorix (client ruler/allied general)
- 5x Galatikoi Kleruchoi
- 4x Galatikoi Kluddolon
- 4x Gaeroas
- 2x (Mistophoroi Thraikikoi) Peltastai
- 2x Leuce Epos / Curepos
- (if have extra money) 2x Galatikoi Lavotuxtri

That seems very infantry-heavy. No slingers/archers? No heavier cavalry aside from the optional Lavotuxtri?

That seems very infantry-heavy. No slingers/archers? No heavier cavalry aside from the optional Lavotuxtri?

maybe he meant this army is used for either siege or aggresive operations, which galatians excel in. changing 1 or 2 kluddolon with sphendenotai will be better for defensive field operations.

BTW, Ptolemaioi is allready have excellent cavalry and missile troops (Toxotai Kretikoi FTW), Galatians for them are to provide better heavy infantry

They're Celts and no Hellenes. Though it's no realistic Galatian army, especially not if it's a Ptolomaioi one (they would use more cavalry), I think it's just what he used.
