View Full Version : Time to smash my head against the wall- repeatedly

So today the FB page for "The Kings Speech" posted something along the lines of "If you live in the Atlanta area, post here why you loved this movie and you might get a special reward from us!"

So I posted why I loved the movie and how I stuttered and how it gave me and other stutterers hope that people will begin to understand what it was like to stutter.

Two hours later I got a message from the Weinstein Co. Social Media Director that was an invitation to attend to a special "The Kings Speech" event in Atlanta.

Awesome, right? One problem: its on Saturday.

Sometimes I really hate being Jewish.

I might be totally off-base about this, but can you do stuff after sundown? I thought the Sabbath lasted from Friday sundown until Saturday at the same time. (My mother taught me absolutely nothing about Judaism.)

If so, you might have a shot if it's in the evening.

Don't miss an opportunity like that over the Sabbath. You're not orthodox are you? Live a little.

Gosh!

I knew you guys couldn’t work on the Sabbath but I didn’t know you couldn’t have fun.

Maybe you could just be a hedonist for a day?

I don’t think God has any particular religion in the first place.

For the first time ever I completely agree with Panzer. Make up for it by doing extra prayers or something the next Sabbath, or volunteer to help at your synagogue, or donate money to charity or something. I personally think that you would be very hard-pressed to classify this as "work" anyway (Although I do know that some families don't even flick light switches on the Sabbath).

Hooahguy

The event is from 10am-6pm.
And no I cant take a day off. Maybe if I lived by myself I could but since Im under my parents roof, no luck.

If you what you wrote about what the movie meant to you wasn't a lie, that explanation should be fine.

disclaimer: I've not dealt too much with religious parents.

I have similar issues with fasting around Easter time and other random dates during the year. Best wishes towards you bro, hope it works out. If you threw a big enough tantrum maybe?...

Hooahguy

39 forms of work that are forbidden on the sabbath, they observe all of them.
Dont bother guys, theres no chance of me going to this thing anyways.

First of all...

I beg to be forgiven for my ignorance on the Jewish matters. :shame:

I think it's the first time I hear that watching a film is a form of work... You've just significantly reduced the unemployment rate worldwide!

Second, you are a Jew and you are supposed to know how to get out of such situations.

Third, perhaps (however unlikely it could be) your parents might understand. You won't lose anything to ask, I think.

Fourth, look it from the bright side. A film does not worth to damage the plaster of the wall. Life goes on, really. Go out with friends on Sunday to compensate that!

Become one of those Jews4Jesus and amaze your parents with Jesus' radical teachings on the sabbath?

Oh come on. You mean ya can't commit sins then go to confession and promise not to do it again till the next time?
No wonder the Jews invented Christianity, too much repression man.

Hebrew must be especially nast t t ty if you stutter, you can get away with the need to recite it better. Be a little creative, the Talmud exists because of convenient interpretation

What made me giggle was how, if you say it out loud, it sounds like you are saying, "Titty." But I'm dirty-minded, so whatever.
