The Levantine Struggle

https://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa181/phonicsmonkeytw/Biz_Staples_Crusades1small.jpg

This is a hotseat campaign in Kingdoms: Crusades with the 1.5 patch, for 5 human players as follows:

1. Principality of Antioch: Thanatos Eclipse (formerly Tristan de Castelreng)
2. Kingdom of Jerusalem: Myth (formerly GeneralHankerchief) RIP turn 55
3. Byzantine Empire: Cecil XIX
4. Turks: phonicsmonkey (formerly Ezilkannan, Quirl, Tosa Inu)
5. Egypt: Nightbringer RIP turn 23

The rules are as follows:
- Players shall post a link to the save game in the main game thread and also send a private message to the next player in line to alert them that it is their turn. The save game file should follow the naming convention LS-turn number-faction (eg. LS-1-Antioch)

- Players have 48 hours to play each turn, with extensions granted at request. The GM will skip a players' turn if the deadline is missed with no communication and a sub allied to the player cannot be found.

- All battles between human-controlled factions are to be auto-resolved

- No spies may be used to open the gates of settlements or forts.

- Siege equipment may only be used to open gates as follows: Ballista can open nothing, Catapults can open wooden walls, Trebuchets can open stone walls.

- No crusades or jihads can be called or joined by a human player.

- No destroying buildings for cash under any circumstances.

- No fighting losing defensive battles on purpose in a besieged city, just to deny the invader the sacking option.

- If an army is beaten in battle by a faction that is after them in the turn order that army may not move on the following turn.

- An army which is beaten in battle may not be attacked on the following turn (because it is immobilized either by the game mechanic or by the rule above) by any faction unless it has retreated to a fort or settlement.

- No exploits, including (but not limited to): no merchant forts, no surround-and-destroy, no tribute deals that deliberately put you into debt greater than 10k, no deliberate diplomatic exchange of territories just to get a free garrison, no tribute deals with or monetary gifts to the Pope, no attacking ships in ports.

If a player is in doubt about whether an in-game action is permissible he shall consult the GM who will make a ruling. Players are requested to compete in a good spirit and use their judgment and sense of fairness at all times.

If a player is suspected of cheating, please make a private report to the GM and avoid making a public accusation or resorting to flaming in the game thread or elsewhere.

The first save game file is here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=205&id=8716) and Antioch is up.

Have fun!

Out of curiosity, how does this rule:

no tribute deals that deliberately put you into debt greater than 10k

...help the player? I think I have an idea but confirmation from somebody who is actually smart about these things would be helpful.

Cecil XIX
02-11-2011, 20:07
Off hand, I believe being in debt can help give your generals good traits. Although I'm assuming there's something else that makes it big enough to ban, of course.

Nightbringer
02-11-2011, 21:47
I would assume it is to prevent a player from boosting an allies economy too much before dying. As in, you have one province left, and are going to die very soon, so you make a deal to give your ally 100,000,000 florins each turn. They actually get that much and you go into that much dept.

hey guys I had an idea I want to run by you.

What if I used my admin rights to access your save games and produce a kind of composite AAR of the game, including campaign maps, screenshots, in-game stats etc?

I would of course lag this by an appropriate number of turns in order to avoid compromising the competitive nature of the game (would 5 turns be enough?) and if you like I could check with the players on individual pieces of content / information to make sure everything is ok before posting.

The idea would be to produce a record of the game that could be enjoyed by the players and also by any spectators.

GeneralHankerchief
02-21-2011, 05:58
I'd like this idea very much. As a matter of fact, the only reason why I haven't done any writeups for this is precisely the reason you mentioned.

Yeah I find the story threads in hotseats only tend to get going once the initial turns are out of the way. Of course we can still have a story thread where you guys can do your own writeups.

I could then link to them in my 'turn-by-turn' which would be more of a commentary-free account of the state of the world at each end turn... posted in the first post of this thread.

hey guys - we had an incident where a defeated navy was sunk on the following turn when it should have been immune.

Can I please request that when defeating an army or a navy you post the name of the Admiral, Captain or General here when posting the save, so that subsequent players can keep track?

Otherwise we'll have to start posting screenshots which is more onerous.

GeneralHankerchief
03-23-2011, 03:31
This should only work for forces that are defeated and the defeated force is before in the turn than the victor, correct?

For example, if I defeat an Egyptian army I shouldn't have to post the name since the army won't be able to move anyway.
But if an Egyptian army defeats one of my forces Nightbringer should post the name of my army because otherwise it would still have all of its movement points.

...I think this is it.

In theory yes - but in practice it's probably best to post the names of all defeated armies/navies, so there's no doubt and also so that other players know not to attack them.

In the current incident I believe the ship in question had no move but was still attacked by mistake.

EDIT: as an additional comment, this works rather better over at TWC where there is a requirement to post screenshots. However I personally find that an unnecessary drag and would prefer to just post names if I were playing...

_Tristan_
03-23-2011, 08:24

In fact the ship had all its movement points and could have been retreated bar the rule preventing just that...

GH, I would advise posting the names as it would point out to Nightbringer, for example, the armies you defeated, that he shuoldn't reinforce or it would make them assaillable in your turn.

To be clear, being first in the turn, if I defeat an army from anybody, can I attack it on the next turn or not, as it has not been able to move or does it ony apply to the players that come after me in the turn that have defeated my armies ?

What of my armies that are defeated on my turn (fingers crossed...) ? Can they be moved on my next turn ? Attacked by players that follow me in the turn order ?

phonicsmonkey
03-23-2011, 08:34
To be very clear: no army or navy beaten in battle may either be moved or be attacked (unless reinforced) on the following turn, regardless of the position in the turn order.

Sorry guys, apparently we've had another rules snafu and GH attacked an army that he had defeated the previous turn (Captian Yousef I'm guessing), drawing out the Karak garrison.

We're gonna need to wind it back and replay from GH's turn.

A great victory for the Fatimid caliphate! Ascalon has fallen and the foul crusader king's army has been slaughtered. The king now skulks in the besieged city of Jerusalem, awaiting his death. Meanwhile, two new armies are almost complete within Egypt. Against this storm, the so called "kingdom of jerusalem" will fall.

And just as a reminder, Saladin cannot be attacked this turn as he was unable to move, and your troops inside jerusalem and the castle just to the west of it (can't remember the name) are not allowed to move as they retreated there. (except for the troops that occupied that castle before my turn of course)

hey guys

I've been asked by one player whether I would consider playing Venice when the 4th Crusade appears.

What does everyone think? One thing is, because I didn't set them as playable at the start, I'd need to access the save from the end of the previous player's turn (Egypt) and hit end turn myself - as you can't save anywhere on Venice's turn itself or the game will crash.

Ack, I've run into a bit of a problem. I just played the Antioch turn, and as soon as I hit the "end turn" button, the screen froze on what looks to be the cycling shields as normal, but the problem is it stays there - on Antioch (or Armenia or whatever Tristan called it). In other words, I get no chance of advancement to the Jerusalem screen and the cursor has totally disappeared. Is this a greater issue/one that the hotseat regulars know about, or should I just play the turn again and hope for the best?

They won't work unless you do one of two things:

1. Had them set as playable in the descr_strat file and selected them in the faction selections screen.

If you haven't done that, then you will have to clear the player before Venices password and that person must not hit end turn, and the venice player loads up the save then hits end turn. Otherwise it will screw up.

Yes I'm all over that, but thanks anyway. We'll have to load from the autosave because Venice is not playable in descr_strat.

It's a pain but it's workable - we did this for WotK for 40 turns. Venice won't last that long.

Visor
06-15-2011, 00:51
Good to know you've got this covered. Venice probably won't last long at all unless Byz are AI, or getting smashed. Turks really need to start of stronger in the crusades campaign.

@ Phonics

It's better to just set them playable in the descr_strat before you start a campaign, makes it easier. You can play as all emergent factions in M2TW easily this way.

The reason I'm playing them, by the way, is that the Turkish player suggested they should have a human player controlling them so that they present a problem for the Byzzies like they are supposed to. If they are AI they just get blocked off with forts and ignored.

Personally, I've had that happen twice, it is extremely annoying.

Skip away, at least for this turn. I'm going to check to see if I can get another Kingdoms game for cheap.

Would you like someone to sub for you (and Tristan) instead? Zim might be willing if you send him some instructions and the password. I'd hate the outcome of the Levantine Struggle to be determined by a chipped DVD...

GeneralHankerchief
06-22-2011, 11:23
Hmm, I guess subbing would be better in this case. I'll PM Zim and see if he's interested.

Let me know if he's too busy and I'll ask someone from one of the other games to help out instead.

Hi, sorry for nontopic message but i need to get the answer quickly to my question. I want to start a crusades 1.05 hotseat in a local tw forum but couldnt manage to set myself as admin, i downloaded a save file in this hotseat and saw that you ve managed to set an admin password. Could anyone tell me how to do that?

I add admin_password = mypassword but i can select more than one faction in faction list in crusades campaign. And if i use kingdoms hotseat campaign mode, i am unable to set myself as admin.

Thanks in advance....

Welcome to the org jturcoman! Try following the instructions in the FAQ thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?102193-Welcome-to-the-Throne-Room!-Rules-FAQ-and-Links-%28Including-File-Upload-Systems%29&p=2228640&viewfull=1#post2228640) and if that doesn't work pm me and I'll see if I can help.

Also, have you considered hosting your hotseat here at the Throne Room instead? We'd love to have you here.

So it seems, as of right now, I am indeed the only player. (although GH is back soon). Do I win? XD

Hold your horses, I'll be subbing crusading forces this turn; although it looks like I may need to come on full time, if for no other reason just to put your ego back in check :p

If it makes you feel better, I wasn't able to reach the other army cause of that loser Longsword who you defeated last turn

Edit: By the way, I'm willing to take over Antioch if you still want, three front war looks like fun

Actually I have no idea which army my Crown Prince was leading...I only took over the Turks a turn ago.

Hmm - I see Cecil attacked and defeated the Venetians on the Byzantine turn before they had a chance to move or do anything.

That seems a little unfair on them - what does everyone else think?

EDIT: forget it, I'm not going to play them anyway, I have enough on my plate and they were only ever going to be a distraction for Byzantines.

Antioch (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=205&id=9230) is up!
