It does work on Vista, so what you are asking is not impossible. So to start with, what is the problem you are seeing (CTD at some point, no control, bad rez, etc.)? And what are your hardware specs: video card, RAM, dxdiag results?

If you have Vista 64-bit and a middle/high end nVIDIA video card, run in Compatibility for XP/ME and maximum battlemap resolution set at 1152x864.

Should work without many problems.

What's the game details you're using? Battle resolution, unit size, campaign map resolution, particle effects, hardware or software acceleration?

If you are running Vista 64-bit, I think you need to run MTW under compatibility mode. I believe Win2000 works best. You should definitely apply the button fix (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?103656-NEW-Fix-for-CTD-when-starting-campaign-%28Nvidia-High-End-Cards%29&p=2484458&viewfull=1#post2484458), your graphics card is going to give you trouble.

that button fix link does nothing but confuse me

peter_de123 found that replacing the two .bif files that represented the previous and next buttons on the campaign map fixed the campaign map CTD when using nVidia 8/9XXX series cards. He used the previous and next buttons from the Napoleon MTW mod, I'm guessing the mod version of the buttons get rendered differently and don't crash the game. The link in that post points you to a zip file with the 2 buttons from the mod, all you need to do is download it, unzip, and place the .bif files in the "Medieval - Total War\campmap\buttons" directory. You should probably back up the originals, button_ipnext.bif and button_ipprev.bif (change their names by appending ".orig" to them) prior to overwriting them.

I know this is somewhat off topic and I can't find a clear answer to this using the search function, but does MTW work with Win 7? Or will I need to do some tweaking? I was thinking of buying the Gold edition but I don't want to waste my money if it won't work.

MTW does work on Win 7, depending on the hardware configuration of course, and there may need to be a little tweaking. What OS version (32-bit/64-bit), how much RAM, and what video card do you have?

64-bit, 4GB RAM, and (I think) an AMD M880G w/ ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200

Should work, you will probably need to run in Win XP/2000 compatibility mode, but I think your video card should run it fine. I'm on Vista with a Mobility 4850, I can run it with no problems. There is a resolution option issue with Win 7, but there is a workaround.

Thanks! I'll be ordering it soon.

Geforce series 8XXX nad 9XXX don't allow to command units in battle (mouse doesn't work properly with screen). I haven't seen any fix for this. There is a little workaround but very limited and uncomfortable. You can command units via minimap so maximize the minimap and try (forget about any sophisticated maneuvers).

I am running vista with an ATI 1250, and I have no idea how to get it to work. Ive done the button fix, and I am running it in compatibility mode, but these little things are doing nothing.

What troubles are you seeing? Is it crashing upon entering the campaign, or somewhere else?

Motep

It crashes upon entering the campaign, yes. The battles are working just fine.

The 1250 is the integrated graphics Xpress line, right? At first I thought that you shouldn't have this problem with an ATI card, but if you have an IGP that might be the problem. Have you tried different screen resolutions for the campaign map?

Motep

as in x1250? yeah.

And I have tried various sizes, yes.

The X12xx series IGPs are the AMD RS690 chips. They are not true X1xxx series chips and are actually closer to the X700 chips.

I have gotten the game running on an X1200 on XP with no issues - the onboard graphics seem to make the whole system sluggish (right from boot up) though so they're not great. Try installing the original chipset drivers that came with the motherboard - though I've gotten the game running on the latest drivers as well.

To be honest though, I would have thought the button fix would have solved this. Are you absolutely sure you installed the files in the right place? I say this because several people have gotten this wrong in the past.

They are in the right spot, yes

And I dont recall ever updating my drivers...
